Oakland RHP Ziegler has streak snapped
OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) —Oakland Athletics rookie righthander Brad Ziegler saw his streak of 39 1/3 scoreless innings come to an end when he allowed an RBI double to B.J. Upton in the ninth inning of Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Ziegler, who already set the major-league record for scoreless innings to begin a career, threw a perfect eighth to tie the record for a reliever set by Cleveland’s Al Benton in 1949.
In the ninth, the 28-year-old retired the first hitter before allowing a single to Akinori Iwamura, who scored on Upton’s double.
