Milton Bradley part of three-way trade talks with Mets, Jays

  • Print

Add this to the Milton Bradley(notes) rumor pile as baseball's general managers meet this week:  The Chicago Cubs reportedly are working to move him in a potential a three-team deal with the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.

FoxSports.com reports the Cubs have discussed dealing Bradley to the Mets for second baseman Luis Castillo(notes). The Mets would then flip Bradley to the Jays for first baseman Lyle Overbay(notes).

The Fox report says such a deal is a "long shot" to happen, however. An unnamed major league source tells the Web site that new Jays GM Alex Anthopolous is reluctant to make Bradley his first significant offseason acquisition.

Fox adds that Tampa Bay continues to be Bradley's most likely destination, perhaps in a deal for Rays outfielder Pat Burrell(notes), if the Cubs agree to pay a significant portion of Bradley's $12 million salary for 2011. Burrell can become a free agent after 2010.

Still, a Bradley-Castillo-Overbay deal makes some sense. The Cubs want to trade Bradley, who had a troubled first season in Chicago and is owed $21 million total over the final two years of his contract. The Mets reportedly would like to replace Castillo, who has two years and $12 million remaining on his deal, with potential free agent Orlando Hudson(notes). And the Blue Jays last week discussed a trade of Overbay to the Arizona Diamondbacks for catcher Chris Snyder(notes). Overbay will make $7 million next season in the final year of his contract.

For the love of all that is holy, Alex Anthopolous, DO NOT TRADE for Milton Bradley. If you want a Milton Bradley that badly, just get a board game.

this trade will fill the first base hole left by delgado. it then will help with the second base issue if the mets were to sign hudson

This would be an excellent trade as long as they trade Bradley for Overbay.

it would only be fitting if mets were "kind enuf" (a polite word for foolish...) to take Meltdown Brat-ley. They owe us for '69... If mets fall for this one- i'll cook omar t-giving dinner, he can take my girl out, hell! he can use my hot-tub!...oops, forgot we sold it...hmmm...er...uhm...its ok! i'll get a new one for him to use!!! i dunno that ANY team should be desperate enuf to feel the "need" MB, that said, he is just childish enuf to TRY to put up carreer #s to say "See, I toldya so"? to da cubbies...

Based on his track record, I'd say Omar Minaya is just stupid enough to actually trade for Bradley. It's like the man just can't tank his job hard enough to get fired. Maybe Bradley is an offensive boost for the team. The problem is he's just plain offensive. Cancer in the clubhouse and the Mets in 4th place. Kind of makes me glad I'm not a Mets fan.

NOW Omar wants Orlando Hudson.....NOW, not when he could've had him for less than Castillo 's salary. Omar couldn't run a hot dog cart business, let alone a MLB organzation. If I was Orlando Hudson, I'd stay as far away from Flushing until the Wilpons "flush" Minaya out of the front office.

    GoMets,
I wonder the same thing every time another team signs him, but so far 8 teams have done so in the last 10 years. Shows that Omar isn't the only idiot GM in the game.

Why are half the people who posted talking about Castillo for Bradley? Didn't you guys read the article?

I am at a loss that anyone would take Bradley at this point, even if they didn't have to pay him.

If this trade can happen, I say go for it. Overbay will provide some veteran leadership on the IF and a steady glove and bat for the next 1-2 years (while Ike Davis matures). O-Hud doesn't have the range at 2B that he used to, but he's a switch-hitter with plate discipline and he's a gamer who can be a great compliment to Reyes up the middle.

The question is, what do we do with Daniel Murphy? While I like the kid, his natural position is 3B, so maybe he should be traded where he can play 3B and we can get some pitching.

The Cubs should skip this trade, and go after Felipe Lopez as a free agent. Trade Bradley to Tampa for Burrell, and use him as a fourth outfielder/pinch hitter.

I would definately pull the trigger on the Castillo/Bradley swap! Then I would trade Bradley/Martinez/Parnell/Kuntz for Halladay/Overbay!

In case you didn't notice Bradley is not exactly setting the world on fire. He behaves like a petulant child who always wants his way. He cannot play the field, he is a one dementional player

I thought I wanted Hudson too, but the guy couldn't hold down the job with the Dodgers, so I'm not sure.
How about a trade for Uggla?

Barry G, you must be a Phillies fan. Nobody would want that no good bum Bradley on their team.
The problem with this trade is that Overbay is a lefty - the Mets have a lefty first baeman in Murphy and need a righty to platoon.

Have you seen Bradley play? The guy is a bum, I would take a box used sweaty gym socks for Bradley if I were the Cubs. He is the definition of clubhouse cancer. His defense is terrible, possibly one of the few contracts in MLB that makes Luis' look good.

Hey Minaya, forget the Jays, just get Bradley for Castillo. Great trade. Get rid of Castillo, please. Anytime you can get a player like Milton Bradley for someone who sucks like Castillo, do it. Please.
