Mets decline Putz's option; reliever willing to return for less

  • Print

The New York Mets will not exercise J.J. Putz's(notes) $8.6 million option, but the reliever is willing to return on a cheaper, incentive-laden deal, Putz's agent, Craig Landis, tells the New York Post.

Putz was 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA in 29 appearances as a Met, giving up 29 hits while walking 19 and striking out 19 in 29 1/3 innings. He did not pitch after June 4 because of bone chips in his right elbow. The Post report says the Mets cited "health concerns" when they told Putz his option would not be picked up.

With Francisco Rodriguez(notes) entrenched as the Mets' closer, Putz would have to accept a setup role in New York. Putz was the Seattle Mariners' closer before being traded to the Mets last December in a three-team, 12-player deal.

Good set up guys are hard to find especially if he's willing to come back on the cheap. Met's need to go "all in" for Holliday and then two SP's and hope a meteorite falls on Ollie P's house...hey it might happen.

Do you think the Phils might take him on a hunch considering the state of their pen? If the Mets can get him cheaper take a chance . His track record is prettty good. I would hate to see him hold or close games for the Phils or Braves.

I agree barry, didn't get to see him enough to tell... and what I do remember seeing wasn't THAT impressive.

If he's willing to take a decrease in pay and pitch based on incentives, he's definitely worth it, provided his rehab went well.

The Mets will still overpay him if they pay him less, and he knows that.

I wonder, if this is good that he wants to come back for less. Or bad, that he actually wants to come back.
    I don't know.
