Knee problems gone, Washburn eager to keep pitching

  • Print

Detroit Tigers left-hander Jarrod Washburn(notes) told the Seattle Mariners' Web site he entered spring training with plans to retire after the 2009 season. That was because he struggled so much in 2008 (5-14, 5.69 ERA).

Washburn, however, had his troublesome knee surgically repaired last week and should be fully recovered by spring training. The free-agent-to-be now plans to pitch next season.

Washburn told the Web site that Seattle is among the teams at the top of his list. Washburn went 8-6 with a 2.64 ERA in 20 starts for Seattle this season before being dealt to Detroit. Hindered by the knee problems, Washburn went just 1-3 with a 7.33 ERA in eight starts for the Tigers.

Can the Tigers take this deal back and us get Luke French back please?

It's apparent the M's knew something that we didn't. Jarred's stellar performance (1 win) didn't help us in making the playoffs...

I wish him luck and hope that the Tigers steer clear of him this time . . .

    Yes, I mis-spelled his name. I really don't care.

Oh sure, now he wants to play for Seattle? Whatever Jared. Go invest your extra money somewhere.

This guy can only be viewed as a 4th or fifth starter on any club. Has only had one truly good season in his career and rarely has put up more than .500 numbers. Hoped that his low ERA this year when Tigers got him would be an asset in Detroit. but he was a liability. Allowed 11HRs in 133 IP in Seattle and 12 in 43 IP in Detroit and won only one game. Only one additional win needed from him and Tigers were in the playoffs. His injury forced the team to use a busload of poor 4th starters. At his age, injury problems and history would not give him more than a lower number one year contract loaded to reflect GS and IP.

Wish him luck and not unhappy he is leaving the Tigers.
