Big Papi on Red Sox: 'I want to finish my career here'

  • Print

About to enter the final year of his contract (the team has a $12.5 million option for 2011), Red Sox DH David Ortiz(notes) told the Boston Herald that he knows he needs to step up in 2010.

Ortiz says he plans to do just that and hopes to remain in Boston beyond next season. "I want to finish my career here," Ortiz told The Boston Globe. "I think I still have another three or four good years in me."

Despite a slow start this season (one homer, 18 RBIs through May), Ortiz finished with 28 homers and 99 RBIs. "Everybody is used to seeing me hitting 40 homers with 140 RBI," Ortiz said. "But I tell you, anybody will take 30 and 100. If I hit two more homers and get one more RBI next year than I did this year, what are people going to say?"

Ortiz added that the wrist that sidelined him for much of 2008 is completely healthy and that he plans to start swinging the bat earlier this offseason in preparation for spring training.

Hey big floppy, "the best thing the Red Sox should do this off-season is get rid of you and JD Drew! Between the two of you, you are making $27,000,000 in the upcoming season! I would be a very happy Sox fan if they would think about a block-buster trade involving Paplebon, Ortiz, and Drew for a much needed boost to the offense and youth movement. Can you believe that Youkulis only make $6,000,000 in 2010. He is the best player on the team, and is paid in the bottom half of the payroll!!!! He can play a # of positions and always plays each play to the fullest!! A lot of players should watch him and learn how to play the game, the way he does! The Sox BETTER get rid of some of their SALARY SUCKERS and get some YOUNG ballplayers if they want to keep pace in the A.L. East! I do think that the signing of Jeremy Hrmedia {spelling?} spells the end of JD Drew in Beantown though. It's a good start, but they must do a lot more. I do think that Lowell is certainly on hi last leg's and Youkulis should take over full time at third, when, Ortiz is shipped elsewhere! Why not put Lowell at full time D.H. and get rid of David Ortiz! They should also let J. Bay go, to go after Holliday. He will be a great hitter playing 81 games at Fenway, and pitcher's just don't fear Bay at all. Another long disappointing season if they don't cut bait and fish elsewhere!
