Ben Sheets planning to pitch in 2010

  • Print

After missing the entire 2009 season after offseason surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his pitching arm, right-hander Ben Sheets(notes) told MLB.com he plans to return in 2010. He said he will be "more than ready to go" for next season.

In eight major league seasons (all with the Milwaukee Brewers), Sheets is 86-83 with a 3.72 ERA. The Web site speculated the Brewers, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox could be among Sheets' suitors in the free-agent market.

Bring Ben back, but in the bull pen. Save his arm by using him as the set up guy.

Sheets should be a ranger, but ownership (or a lack of ownership) will prevent that from happening. DFW metroplex is small market, that's news to me.

Rangers almost signed him last off season until his medical exams showed he wasn't going to pitch for a while. They have former Brewers pitching coach Mike Maddux as their pitching coach now and Sheets is from Texas, right? Add to that the fact that Texas actually had a winning season and were still in contention during the final week or so of the season, and I put my money on the Rangers picking him up on a decent sized contract with added incentives because he's coming off of surgery. If Boston or NY want to pay premium bucks for him though, let them throw them at someone who just had a torn tendon in his pitching arm repaired. Do you think they will actually do that for someone who just had this kind of surgery?

Ben will go to Texas. He was visiting down there an occasion or two IIRC. Mike Maddux and the small market will be the reason.

Ben Sheets has a glass arm. He stole well over two years of his contract on the injured reserve. Good riddance, let another team pay him to sit. Brewers need to build from within.

Boston will get him. They'll pay a price higher than anyone except the Yankees, because there is no equality in baseball and Bud Selig wouldn't dear instill a salary cap because the Yankees would NEVER win anything again. But at least the umpires don't decide the outcome of games, like in the NBA. Go Rangers!

Brewers need to try and get Ben back. I know he is injury prone, but when healthy he is a top 10 pitcher in the National league. A lot of his loses early in his career, were because of poor run support. So give him a chance.
