Blue Jays Team Report

INSIDE PITCH

The drums have started to beat in the trade rumors surrounding Roy Halladay(notes).

They haven’t reached the loudness that accompanied the Blue Jays and Halladay last July in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, but it’s early.

With the winter meetings on the horizon beginning Dec. 7 in Indianapolis, the racket surrounding Halladay and the Blue Jays soon will become ear-splitting.

While new general manager Alex Anthopoulos is determined not to go public with any information regarding Halladay—“I won’t comment on any trade discussions, rumors or speculation,” he said recently—reports of the Blue Jays talking with other clubs regarding the former Cy Young winner have surfaced.

In Los Angeles, the Dodgers and the Angels are said to be interested, the Angels a little more than their National League rivals.

On the East Coast, the usual suspects are said to be lining up in the form of the Red Sox, Yankees and Phillies.

Fueling the discussion are the recent comments from Paul Beeston, who has taken over the full-time president and CEO duties with the Blue Jays.

Beeston loves Halladay and would like nothing better than to have him sign another contract extension, but he knows that’s not possible because Halladay’s wants and the status of the present-day Blue Jays provide a gap that can’t be bridged.

Halladay wants to play for a winner, and the Blue Jays are in a youth, rebuilding kick.

As Beeston recently said: “We would like to sign him, he is an original Blue Jay and we have never had a pitcher as good as him. But he is not inclined to sign with us.”

Given that, it’s hard to believe that Halladay will be a Blue Jay for much longer. By the end of the winter meetings, he should be gone.

NOTES, QUOTES

—Free agent SS John McDonald(notes) and the Blue Jays agreed to terms on a two-year, $3 million contract. McDonald, who is gifted defensively but a weak hitter, received little playing time in 2009 due to the career season put in by SS Marco Scutaro(notes), who is also a free agent. McDonald, 35, a fan favorite, can also play second base, third base and in a pinch, left field. He will be a backup infielder in 2010. In parts of 73 games last season, McDonald hit .258 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.

• Dec. 7 will be an interesting date for the Blue Jays, as besides being the opening day of the winter meetings in Indianapolis, it is the final day for a club to offer salary arbitration to its players. It will interesting to see if the Blue Jays offer arbitration to two of their top free agents, SS Marco Scutaro and C Rod Barajas(notes). An arbitration offer to Scutaro likely would kill interest in him from a number of prospective clubs as they may not be inclined to lose a top draft pick—Scutaro is a Type A free agent—to sign a 34-year-old player coming off a career season. Scutaro’s agent has said that arbitration with the Blue Jays is one of the options they would be interested in. Barajas is a Type B free agent.

• One of the players the Blue Jays seem interested in moving is 1B Lyle Overbay(notes), who has reportedly been shopped to a number of teams. Overbay has not been the same hitter since he suffered a right hand injury in June 2007 when he was hit by a pitch. In 2006, Overbay hit .312 with 46 doubles, 22 home runs and 92 RBIs. In 2008, his numbers were .270, 32, 15, 69 in 158 games. In 2009, they were .265, 38, 16, 65 in 132 games. If the Blue Jays move Overbay and his $7 million contract, OF/DH Adam Lind(notes) would shift to first.

• 2B Aaron Hill(notes) and OF/2B Adam Lind both received votes in balloting for the American League’s Most Valuable Player. While the MVP award was won in overwhelming fashion by Twins C Joe Mauer(notes), Hill finished 12th in the voting with 23 points, with Lind finishing 15th with 14 points. Earlier in November, both Hill and Lind received Silver Slugger awards.

• RHP Rob Ray appears to have mended from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss most of the 2009 season. Ray, who was 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA in four starts with the Blue Jays, went 2-1 with a 4.81 ERA in seven starts with the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League. Ray will be a candidate for a spot in the Blue Jays rotation.

• C Sal Fasano(notes), who hit .236 in 61 games for the Rockies’ Class AAA Colorado Springs affiliate this year, retired from his playing career and accepted a job as manager of the Blue Jays’ Class A Lansing affiliate. Fasano, 38, played in parts of 11 big-league seasons for Kansas City, Oakland, Colorado, Anaheim, Baltimore, Philadelphia, the New York Yankees, Toronto and Cleveland.

By The Numbers:   $58 million—The combined salary the Blue Jays have committed to the seven players they have under contract for the 2010 season, topped by the $21 million owed to CF Vernon Wells(notes) (a $12.5 million salary plus an $8.5 million bonus). The Blue Jays are on the hook for an additional $10 million to former closer LHP B.J. Ryan(notes). Toronto’s payroll budget for 2010 is an estimated $80 million, the same as in 2009.

Quote To Note:   “We would like to sign him, he is an original Blue Jay and we have never had a pitcher as good as him. But he is not inclined to sign with us.”—Blue Jays president and CEO Paul Beeston, on the prospect of signing RHP Roy Halladay to a contract extension.

ROSTER REPORT

The Blue Jays began the offseason with plenty of change. Paul Beeston removed “interim” from his title to become team president and CEO. General manager J.P. Ricciardi was replaced by his former assistant, Alex Anthopoulos, 32. As far as the roster goes, the biggest decision will revolve around star RHP Roy Halladay and whether to keep him for the 2010 season or trade him in the offseason for much needed talent.

Biggest Needs:   The Jays have to figure out what they will do with RHP Roy Halladay—keep him or trade him. They also might have to scramble to fill the holes at shortstop and catcher if free agents Marco Scutaro and Rod Barajas sign elsewhere. They do not have ready replacements in their system for either player.

Arrivals:   LHP Sean Henn(notes) (claimed off waivers from Orioles), INF Jarrett Hoffpauir(notes) (claimed off waivers from Cardinals), INF Mike McCoy(notes) (claimed off waivers from Rockies).

Free Agents:   SS Marco Scutaro, C Rod Barajas, SS John McDonald, DH/INF Kevin Millar(notes).

The Jays would like to bring back Scutaro and will try and re-sign him. They will probably not pursue Barajas because they think that J.P. Arencibia may be ready to be promoted next season following the All-Star break. They might be willing to go with backup Raul Chavez(notes) and a cheaper alternative than Barajas. They have zero interest in Millar.

Arbitration-eligible:   RHP Jeremy Accardo(notes), OF Jose Bautista(notes), RHP Shawn Camp(notes), C Raul Chavez, RHP Jason Frasor(notes), RHP Casey Janssen(notes), RHP Brandon League(notes), RHP Shaun Marcum(notes), RHP Dustin McGowan(notes), LHP Brian Tallet(notes).

Frasor is the most valuable asset on the list and could be the Jays’ closer in 2010, having taken on the role after LHP B.J. Ryan was released. They have interest in bringing back the others with perhaps lukewarm interest in Jeremy Accardo, a reliever who spent most of the season at Class AAA Las Vegas.

In Limbo:   With the exception of 2B Aaron Hill and LF/DH Adam Lind, the rest of the players on the Jays’ roster can all be had for the right package, including RHP Roy Halladay. Although they’d like more production out of 1B Lyle Overbay, they can live with his $7 million salary for 2010, the final year of his contract.

Medical Watch:

RHP Jesse Litsch(notes) (Tommy John elbow surgery in June 2009) will be at spring training but is not expected to be ready by the start of the 2010 season.

RHP Shaun Marcum (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) will be at spring training and could be ready at the beginning of the 2010 season.

RHP Dustin McGowan (right shoulder surgery in July 2008, right knee surgery in July 2009) will be at spring training but is not expected to be ready by the start of the 2010 season.

RHP Rob Ray (right shoulder strain) will be ready for the start of spring training.

CF Vernon Wells (arthroscopic left wrist surgery in November 2009) is expected to be fully recovered before spring training.

3B Edwin Encarnacion(notes) (left wrist surgery in October 2009) is expected to be ready for spring training.

Doesn't anyone else want to get rid of Overbay, I am a strong believer that 1B needs to be a power position, if your 1 bagger can't even hit 20 homers you have zero chance of winning the world series in this era...... unless he can hit 330........ I think if we are rebuilding a guy like Dopriak needs a shot, was once a top prospect with 30plus homer potential. I have Overbay........ I also think we need a more offensive catcher and obviously more production in Center and 3rd. At least pitching is solid, power and hitting with runners in scoring position is all that separates this team from at least playoff contention.

You want fans - try building a fan base. I have been watching MLB for more that 50 years. And going to games in Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Oakland and San Francisco, and of course Toronto. This was the first season I did not go to a single game. Reason: I hate the bloody Skydome - by any other name. And the way games are presented and spectators are treated in that monument to arrogant architecture.

You cannot change - easily - the architecture of that monstrosity, but you can treat the fans as intelligent people. You have a choice - pander to what you think "young fans" want, or build a solid base of knowledgeable fans who appreciate the game and will keep coming back - for the game - not for example for the nonsense that goes on between innings. Tossing out "free gifts" to the spectators does nothing to educate anyone about the game. I kept going to games for more than 50 years because it is a great game. I stopped because everything that happens in the dome tells me the game itself is not interesting.

    http://jayszone93.wordpress.com/2009/09/28/scutaro-worth-the-risk/

Scutaro was worth 20 million dollars to the Jays in 2009 when we consider his WAR at a premium SS position and what the average teams pays for each win of WAR on the FA market. Of course Scutaro will never in a million years receive a contract for 20 million I think he can easily expect a contract offer of 3 years and around 24 million (8 million/year). If he continues to play at his current rate offensively and shows he can at the very least maintain his defensive prowess at SS he would probably make a team very happy at that price.

But, if he regresses back to his old ways with the bat (career .320 wOBA, .265/.337/.384) he might not be worth the 3-year investment (likely over 20 million) that will probably be needed to secure his services. Scutaro has earned a total of $40.9 million in value (again based on WAR) for his career and 20 million of that was earned in 2009 – so buyer beware. A team could be wise to sign a more defensively minded shortstop in hopes the market will be less for a defence-first guy like Jack Wilson than a guy coming off a career year like Marco Scutaro.

Jays next year. Pitching pretty simple...Halliday, Richmond, Romero, Cecil, Litsch, Long Relief, Tallet, Camp, Closer - Find one. Vernon Welles demote him at training camp, maybe the Jays will get lucky and Boston will take him on waivers or Philadelphia. [They owe us for Jason Werth!]
DH - Ruiz with part-time at first, SS - resign Scutaro, 2B - Hill, 1B - Overbay. LF- Lind, Synder let them flip flop with Ruiz at DH, 3B - Bautista. Utility- John MacDonald. Catcher - Chavez, and trade for a young one catcher of the excess baggage. The plan should be building a winning team, and having enough flexibility to weather injuries. Need to rest Hill and Scutaro more next year. With no Welles coming to the plate, that would make 30 geames that could have been won this year. Oh yeah, find a center fielder that can hit 285 with a few homers.

Whatever they were trying to do with the Blue Jays the last several years is not working. This year more than any other year in recent history. It's time to start fresh...

Chris Bosh talks the same kind of passive complacent BS that Wells talks..."oh well, it's a learning experience" kind of crap. Neither of them are Max deal kind of players and both are the kind that Toronto always makes mistakes with because they are perceived as "nice" guys. Toronto needs to grow some balls and sign players with balls who don't choke . Better press/media in Toronto covering the NBA and MLB would help too....bunch of dimwits now.

the problem is and always has been JP, he has no clue how to work with MLB talent, he is a minor league money kind of guy. he learned all his stuff from the A's and beleives in the billy bean system (which I think is crap) He spent big money on AJ (only had 1 good season and was able to opt out) Frank Thomas (over payed for 1 good year) BJ Ryan (still paying a huge contract) Rios (can't even trade the guy a yr after giving him the contract) Wells (over payed from the beggining) traded Orlando Hudson(multiple all star and gold gloves) for Troy Glaus (constantly on the DL) the past 2 years instead of develping young offencive hitters at the MLB level have been giving playing time to players such as Kevin Mench, Joe Inglet, David Delluci, Brad wilkerson. Even now when he speaks he says the teams has 2 issues to address for next season catcher and SS, last time i checked the guys they have are doing fine there so they jsut need to RE-sign them. The jays were the only team in the AL last year not to sign a player to a MLB contract when the whole world new all they needed and have needed the past 3 years was a big bat. And my last point...throwing Doc under the bus by saying how they are trying to activly trade him, making Doc have to deal with questions about it everytime he turned his head (Doc is not the type of player that likes to deal and talk about things other then pitching, if you noticed he had his worst outting while all this was going on) clearly trades can be done quietly as the Rolon deal was done pretty simple

so in conclusion that is whats wrong with the Jays

i noticed aaron hill often pops out or flies out in foul ground or in the infield during pressure situations. alternatively scutaro is very reliable when it counts. carlson sucks don't understand why cito keeps using this guy in pressure situations.

While I have found it frustrating to watch Wells and Rios this season, at least at the plate, I have always felt that the organization needed only to send them down for some re-assignment to get their swing back in shape for as long as it takes.

I don't have a problem with moving a struggling player but I honestly can't understand Ricciardi getting nothing for a guy who can steal bases and has a pretty decent arm in the outfield.

It's time to fire Ricciardi unless someone can help me understand this move.

Ricciaridi has been the biggest disappointment. He has no eye for talent. Randy Wells anyone? Jays had him gave him away. Now he is one of the best young pitchers in NL. Keep Gaston, tell Riccardi he can stay in Boston year around. I don't get how Riccardi will call a guy up, the guy does a good job (e.g. Hayhurst) and is sent down, but a bozo like League still keeps blowing saves and screwing up like always.

Hey J. P. look at the stats before you send people down!

we have a$hit load of pitchers on the DL. JP should trade 1/2 arms for a 30 hr hitter. Hard to find I know, but this is what we are lacking.. We have an abundance of pitching.

If all the pitchers are healthy next season, we will have a surplus of more than 5. My starting rotation next year would look something like this:

    1. Halladay
    2. Romero - 7-1 in last 10 games
    3. Marcum - If he can put up numbers like he did in 07-08
    4. Litsch
    5. Cecil

Mcgowan, janssen, Rzy, Ray, Purcey - trade 1/2 of these players for a decent hitter who can hit better than wells with runners in scoring position.

It really seems as though the Jays management has it out for Jeremy Accardo, considering there's no mention of him as a potential replacement closer with Downs on the shelf again.

Hate to have lost a player like Rolen as he was a class act and hard worker and a delight to watch play but if he asked for the trade for personal reasons I do respect that and wish him the best in Cinci. Thanks for all you brought to this club Scott!

I'm glad JP didn't part with Scutaro as was also flirted around in trade talks. This guys is one of the smartest ballplayers when he is between the lines and a tough out at the plate. You can't replace that kind of smarts so easily.

They should have never got rid of B.J he got off to a bad start but he is a closer not like Downs who got off to a good start but now has lost us 4 games,i would rather have a good finish ( a sprint to the line) than seeing a screw up like Downs has done he's the one who should be going to AAA.

i like the toronto bluejays but i think it would be very stupid to trade the best pitcher in the majors..why on earth do teams do that???especially when your in a possible playoff hunt...the bluejays will make a big mistake to trade roy halladay.they really need him on the team..they will never receive anyone worth the trade if they do it.

The Jays are blowing games past the 7th Inning; They are exhibiting good pitching and Defense; However, If you go back to the World Championship Teams, there one name that stands out - Dwayne Ward. He would produce 45 - 55 Saves and made significant contributions to another 20 games that were won without getting Credit for the "Win" or "Save." For instance, he would come in the 9th, one out, bases loaded and strike out both hitters that he faced. That would be the same scenario for the 10th, 11th, 12th and so forth. He had a "Knockout Pitch." He was Cito's go to Man. With him, it did not matter whether the hitter was batting from the "Right" or "Left." All the Jays need is Relief Pitcher that can get you 6 outs consistently. The Set-Up man in the 8th is a "Bunch of Bull." All great Relievers have a "Knockout PItch" and of course, "Good Control." You may have that "Dude;" I don't know, but I do know that if you did, the Jays would be at least 20 games over .500. You also had some great every day players who produced runs consistently. A Championship team is going to average 5 - 7 runs a game with the ability to come back in the late innings like the Rays did today. The gist of my comment is: "Remember Dwayne Ward."

Is there a problem with the Jays Strenght and conditioning? It seems that every year our starting rotation (and in fact, our second compilation of starters) is somehow hampered by injury. I have no idea if it is just bad luck, or a chronic lack of proper maintenance?
