Orioles Team Report

INSIDE PITCH

The Orioles will be buyers. For the first time in a considerable span, the club’s management has the financial ability and the organizational direction to add some talent via free agency.

“It’s the fun part of the job. This is the time for us to go up and hit,” Orioles president Andy MacPhail told the Baltimore Sun. “Last year, we made a couple of trades, we signed five free agents. We were pretty active. Numerically, I think we’ll be more active dollar-wise than we were last year. We’re organized, we have our targets that we’re going to go after, and we’ll see how it goes and how the market unfolds.”

The Orioles will attempt to address both corner-infield positions while trying to address a lack of power in the middle of the order. MacPhail will also try to acquire a veteran starter and some help for the back end of the bullpen, while also leaving open the possibility for a backup catcher.

The Sun reported the club would enter 2010 with a payroll around $45 million with its current roster—including arbitration and contract renewals. The 2009 payroll was nearly $70 million.

The Orioles will not chase outfielders Matt Holliday(notes) and Jason Bay(notes) and are unlikely to seriously enter the bidding for Angels free agents Chone Figgins(notes) and John Lackey(notes).

Instead, the team is likely to pursue second- and third-tier free agents—particularly at the corner-infield spots. The club has two highly touted prospects (third baseman Josh Bell and first baseman Brandon Snyder) who could contribute to the big-league roster by midseason. It also has a wealth of young pitching talent on the verge of contributing.

The last time Baltimore made a significant financial splash in free agency was in the winter of 2006-07, when it spent roughly $20 million on the bullpen. Surrounding those unfruitful additions were dozens of questionable contract commitments. If nothing else, the club’s depth of minor league talent should enable it to avoid similar cash-strapping, long-term deals and set MacPhail and his staff in position to add value in the short term.

The Orioles might also look to acquire a starter or slugger via a trade, but MacPhail has insisted he’s not yet willing to trade any of his young talent.

NOTES, QUOTES

—C Craig Tatum(notes), who hit .162 in 26 games for Cincinnati this year, was claimed off waivers by the Orioles. Baltimore cleared a spot for him on the 40-man roster by designating LHP Chris Waters(notes) for assignment.

• LHP Mark Hendrickson(notes) and the club did not enter contract negotiations during an exclusive window, but the team seems dedicated to trying to bring back the versatile veteran. Hendrickson, who could be a long reliever and a spot starter, is unlikely to attract many offers early in free agency. The Orioles will allow the market for Hendrickson to set itself.

• OF Nolan Reimold(notes) was passed over in the Rookie of the Year voting, as were fellow rookies C Matt Wieters(notes) and RHP Brad Bergesen(notes). The club should push through a handful of award contenders in the next two to three seasons, but the lack of industry attention to the 2009 crop indicates the team is still chasing respectability.

• 3B Josh Bell was added to the 40-man roster as the club protected six players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. The top offensive prospect in the system, Bell is likely due to be recalled from the minors by midseason in 2010. He will be invited to major league spring training, as will the other five 40-man roster additions: RHP Brandon Erbe, RHP Luis Lebron, INF Pedro Florimon, 1B Rhyne Hughes and 1B Brandon Snyder

• RHP Steve Johnson was left off the club’s 40-man roster entering December, meaning he’ll be unprotected for the Rule 5 draft. Johnson, acquired from the Dodgers for LHP George Sherrill(notes) in July, is the son of former Orioles RHP Dave Johnson. He’s projected to be a back-of-the-rotation starter or middle reliever in the big leagues, but he has yet to reach Class AAA.

• INF Ty Wigginton(notes) is a starter for the Orioles until the club signs two corner infielders. Wigginton, who is entering the second season of a two-year contract, offers the club flexibility in its offseason dealings. He can play first, second or third base, but the club would prefer him as a right-handed bat off the bench.

By The Numbers:   $29.5 million—Amount the Orioles have dedicated to six players for 2010, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Quote To Note:   “I’m not a big one for making any grandiose statements, but suffice to say, I think we’ll be active. There’s no reason to be skeptical of ownership. He’s done what management has asked him to do.”—Orioles president Andy MacPhail, to the Baltimore Sun, on the upcoming free agent signing period.

ROSTER REPORT

The Orioles have three significant needs: a veteran starter, a cleanup-hitting corner infielder—preferably one who bats right-handed—and another bullpen overhaul. Simple, right? Club president Andy MacPhail would like to cure the bullpen with two swift moves but notes a strong relief corps is the most “mercurial” aspect of roster construction. The team has talented prospects on the farm he could package together in trade talks.

Biggest Needs:   The club’s greatest need is in its lineup, because there is an abundance of young pitching talent ready to fill the rotation and the relief corps. MacPhail is likely to test the trade market rather than the free agent pool to find a bat, while an addition to the rotation or bullpen is more likely to come via free agency. Considering the prospects in the pipeline, the Orioles would be best suited to find a right-handed slugging third baseman to hit behind RF Nick Markakis(notes).

Arrivals:   RHP Armando Gabino(notes) (claimed off waivers from Twins), C Michel Hernandez(notes) (minor league free agent from Rays), C Craig Tatum (claimed off waivers from Reds).

Departure:   LHP Sean Henn(notes) (claimed off waivers by Blue Jays).

Free Agents:   3B Melvin Mora(notes), RHP Danys Baez(notes), LHP Mark Hendrickson, C Chad Moeller(notes), LHP Rich Hill(notes), OF Jeff Fiorentino(notes).

The Orioles declined Mora’s option for 2010, likely ending a decade-long relationship with the third baseman. The club could re-sign him at a lower price if it finds no suitable corner infielders this winter. The club also declined Moeller’s option for 2010. Hendrickson is the most likely to return, provided he’s willing to accept a full-time bullpen role. He thrived in various relief roles but also showed some upside as a starter in late September. Hill and Fiorentino refused minor league assignments and became free agents.

Arbitration-eligible:   RHP Matt Albers(notes), RHP Jeremy Guthrie(notes), RHP Cla Meredith(notes), RHP Chris Ray(notes), DH Luke Scott(notes).

All the Orioles’ eligible players should return, but Albers and Ray will have to impress in spring training to stick with the club. Guthrie, who got a pay cut in arbitration last winter, could be hit with another after losing 17 games in 2009.

In Limbo:   RHPs Brian Bass(notes), Dennis Sarfate(notes), Matt Albers and Chris Ray could be in jeopardy of being dropped from the 40-man roster. All four struggled in the Orioles’ bullpen in extended opportunities this season, and the club will most certainly rid some of its underachieving relievers before spring training. The Orioles have a handful of upper-level prospects who could be dealt as well.

Medical Watch:

LF Nolan Reimold (left Achilles tendon surgery in September 2009) should be ready for spring training.

RHP Brad Bergesen (bruised left shin) was unable to run some six weeks after taking a line drive off his leg, but he should be fully healthy for spring training.

CF Adam Jones(notes) (sprained left ankle) will be healthy for spring training.

RHP Koji Uehara(notes) (sore right elbow) should be fully healthy for spring training.

It's a weak FA market, so I'd like to see the O's be patient and keep the path clear for the baby birds and the money around for 2011. This year, I think Blalock makes sense, as he's a decent bat who can play both corner infield positions and can be had cheap and on a short-term contract, although they really need a right handed bat. Uggla would require the O's to give up something, and the word is he wants to stay at 2nd. Ironically, the guy who really would be a great fit is Aubrey Huff, but I can't see him coming back to Mobtown. Wagner would be a nice addition to the pen, as an established closer who could show the kids a thing or two about preparation and attitude. Again, he can be had relatively cheap and short-term. I'd like to see the rotation and long-relief stay somewhat open to allow the youngsters to get major league action, but another starter who can get some innings would be nice. I think trading for Lowe is too much money unless the Braves eat a sizeable portion, but I'd rather not trade the young guys away. Fellow ex-Red Sok Arroyo would also fit the bill and could seemingly be had for cheap in the trade market, but perhaps just signing a Doug Davis/Braden Looper/Jon Garland type guy would help.

mikemartin48--Hey Mike, Tell me who has been a better coach since Grover. All Pete has hired were minor league coaches at a minimal salary. We need a coach that will use this young talent correctly. We do not try to create runs. Look at the speed we have yet we don't steal enough, hit and run enough, bunt enough, etc. I am just afraid that we have coaches that arent that aggressive. Also look at pitching. I can sit at home and tell you just how long a pitcher will last in the game. I just look at the pitch count and wait until it hits 100. Our pitchers can be in the middle of a no-hitter and they will get pulled at 100. If we make big changes in our infield and pitching the way it looks as if we are then I say let's shake up our coaching staff again

Let the Orioles management alone I know that Davey Johnson is right for the job but if he does not get along with Peter then better off we are. Hand in there it will get better you know it can't get much worst. GO O'S

This team is going in the right direction and I think will be fairly competitive in 2010. I'm not saying playoffs next year but I think 2011 is pretty realistic. We got a TON of talent ready to compete in the future, our outfield looks great, Wieters drastically improved late in the season, B-Rob is one of the most underrated players in baseball, and the pitching staff has a ton of young talent. Now the infield does need some work, particularly third base and a long term option at SS, and they could use another quality veteran pitcher, but the point is they are headed in the right direction, as long as Macphail actually spends money this offseason.

Yo Danny T- Hargrove?? He stunk, Angelos should have thrown him under the Bus a year earlier after the infamous 4-32 finish. What did Grover do here? Did the team improve any under him? Let's see 75,63,67,71 wins. After we went to Seattle and tanked there, HE QUIT, burnt out. Grover is a bum.

I love my Orioles, even though it's tough to be a fan these days. I don't see us having a winning season much less getting into the playoffs in the near future. Twelve years ago, we had a manager who took us wire to wire to the playoffs and his reward was to be fired. Who wants to work for a club with this reward system? sigh.... it's been downhill, ever since.

Go Orioles! I still love you! Waiting for better days....

Need 2 bullpen arms. Let Koji close or bring in Saito. Sign someone like Joe Beimel. The starter is going to be tough. Matusz will be an ace next year. Guthrie worked much quicked in the final 2 months and improved his splits incredibly. He could be in line for a decent 2010. Id be happy getting a pitch like Jon Garland and having a rotation with Matusz, Guthrie, Garland, Tillman, Bergesen. I see that rotation being as good as the young rotation out of Texas or Oakland from 2009 because Matusz/Tillman are as good if not better than Feldman/Holland....a new power hitting 3B would be nice but dont spend money like an injury prone bum like Adrian Beltre...it would be great to think about giving up Arrieta/Britton/Snyder and maybe even Guthrie to go after an Adrian Gonzalez. Or take a few of those prospects out of there and go for a Cantu or Loney.

Summing up the season is t his untill baseball puts in a salary cap all the little market teams will not proper and have to rely on young arms like the O's did and see how that turned out. Look at the NFL although it may not be perfect, what is, there is more parity in the team year in and year out. Just think if there was not a salary cap all the big name teams would always win and it would not be as fun and do one would watch it but because of the cap it makes a somewhat equal playing ground. Not same repeat Super Bowl champions for a long time not like in baseball.

I thought that Mike Hargrove was the best coach for the Orioles in the last decade or so. He was thrown under the bus by Angelos. At least the Grover was very offensive minded. We ran a lot as a team and manufactured runs.
Look at the speed the Orioles have and we arent even close in the stolen base category as a team.
I say get rid of the entire coaching staff. Samuel makes stupid calls at third. The catcher had the ball and was waiting on Wigginton at the plate on Sunday.

Why wait until winter to fire Trembley? Why wasn't he fired after the All-Star break? He hasn't done anything to help the team win! The pitching coach should have been canned a long time ago. He hasn't shown the good young talent how to play or win.

“The coach doesn’t tell you when to go and when to stop. It’s too late. When you’re out there playing this game, you’re on your own. All of that stuff is predetermined.”

It might as well be predetermined since Samuel doesn't know what the flip he's doing.

If that's how it is, why have a pitching or batting coach? You're on your own. Major leaguers should know how to pitch and hit. Trembley's such a retard. I can't wait till he gets fired this winter.

“Baserunning is instinct, baserunning is anticipation, baserunning is the score, the situation, the number of outs, how important is my run and who’s on deck. It’s all instincts,” Trembley told the Baltimore Sun. “The coach doesn’t tell you when to go and when to stop. It’s too late. When you’re out there playing this game, you’re on your own. All of that stuff is predetermined.”

So what are the "base coaches" out there for?? WTF??

Trembley is not a good manager but he is not the worst either. The Orioles were never expected to do much this year so the blame can't be put on Trembley. However, next year is a different story. The future of the Orioles is here and its time to see results. If the O's suck next year, Trembley definitely has to be shipped out.

As for Angelos, he is the worse owner in professional sports, not just baseball. He is not in it for the right reasons. Sell the team to Cal, he would be an owner with passion, love for the game, love for the city, love for the Oriole fans and would do whats necessary to field a respectable team. As for McPhail, I think he has done a wonderful job. The O's finally have a team with hope that one day they will return to glory. He has done quite a bit in the short time he has been here. He has definitely loaded up on pitching but that is OK in rebuilding years. You get a good look at a lot of guys so hopefully next year when the O's are expected to be better, they will have a decent rotation and bullpen. Pitching is key in the majors.

Hey Andy McPhail, Why don't you get together with tremble and see about winning some games. You only have about twenty pitchers- if you and dave can't do something simple like finding a rotation, then the Orioles have the wrong people in management. While you are conferring with tremble, how about hiring a pitching coach? That position has been vacant all year, judguing by the results.

3ill, I agree about spending some cash. We're going to have to buy some corner infielders. There're no prospects in the '10-'11 future that can produce .250-15-75, much less anything better. Just like it's always said about pitching and defense, you need production from the corner infielders. Let the pitching develop on it's own, though. 2010 is a wash. By the time 2011 comes, We'll have strong pitching, catching, outfield and middle infield. And it will all (mostly) be cheap.

You guys are right on the money. Just don't let the Orioles trade any of the young players. I'm hoping Josh Bell will be ready pronto. Maybe Dave Johnson won't come back, but Rick Dempsey can do the job. He was good enough to manage the Dodgers' triple A team for several years. There is nothing wrong with all of the young pitchers the Orioles have that a good pitching coach can't fix- where are you, Greg Maddux???

The future does look bright with the young talent but in order to compete Angelos has got to spend some money. Get a bullpen and I don't mean a Jamie Walker and Bradford upgrade. We need a Cliff Lee type starter, a Soria type closer, a 25 Homer guy at first and third. This is NOT too much to add when you figure the $$$$$ we offered Tex! Spend that $150 mil. on 4 guys instead of 1.
