Sean Rodriguez: Iwamura Trade Gives Him an Opening

Update: The trade of Akinori Iwamura(notes) opens up a potential opportunity for Rodriguez to play second base for the Rays next season.

Recommendation: It’s not a slam dunk for Rodriguez, however. First, the Rays must figure out whether they want Ben Zobrist(notes) to play second or right field, and some of that calculus depends upon when they deem Desmond Jennings ready for the big leagues. Rodriguez also has to prove to the Rays that he’s ready, though that’s partially implied by their acquisition of him in the Scott Kazmir(notes) deal.
