Orioles purchase contract of 3B Tatis from minors

BALTIMORE (Ticker) - Fernando Tatis is back in the major leagues.

The Baltimore Orioles on Friday purchased the contract of the third baseman from Triple-A Ottawa of the International League.

Best known for hitting two grand slams in the same inning for the St. Louis Cardinals, Tatis last appeared in the major leagues in 2003 with the Montreal Expos. He signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles last November and went to spring training as a non-roster invitee.

The 31-year-old Tatis hit .298 with seven home runs and 37 RBI in 90 games for Ottawa this season.

In eight seasons with Texas, St. Louis and Montreal, Tatis hit .261 with 90 home runs in 663 games.

The Orioles sent outright infielder-outfielder Howie Clark to Ottawa to make room on the roster for Tatis. Clark had just one hit in seven at-bats with the Orioles since his contract was purchased from Ottawa last Sunday.

Baltimore also activated righthander Hayden Penn from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Ottawa. He underwent an emergency appendectomy on May 3, the day he was recalled from Ottawa to make his first start with the Orioles.
