Devil Rays acquire RHP Ryu from Cubs

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA (TICKER)—The Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Tuesday acquired righthander Jae Kuk Ryu from the Chicago Cubs for a pair of minor leaguers.

Ryu joins fellow South Korean Jae Seo on the Devil Rays. The Cubs received outfielder Andrew Lopez and righthander Greg Reinhard in the deal.

Ryu, 23, made his major league debut with the Cubs last season, posting an 0-1 record and an 8.40 ERA in 10 games. He also started 23 games with Class AAA Iowa of the Pacific Coast League, going 8-8 with a 3.23 ERA.

Lopez, 20, batted .256 in 56 games with Princeton of the Rookie League.

Reinhard, 23, was 6-10 with a 4.50 ERA in 26 starts for Southwest Michigan of the Rookie League.

The Devil Rays on Tuesday also designated righthander Marcos Carvajal for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Ryu. Carvajal appeared in 39 games for Class AA Montgomery of the Southern League and went 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA.
