George Steinbrenner spends time at his office

  • Print

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—George Steinbrenner returned to his office at the Yankees’ spring training complex for the first time since New York won the World Series last week.

The 79-year-old owner spent more than three hours with family members and team officials looking back at the franchise’s 27th title and discussing plans for the upcoming season. Also attending were son Hal Steinbrenner, who succeeded his father as managing general partner; daughters Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal and Jessica Steinbrenner; and special assistant Tino Martinez.

Steinbrenner uses a wheelchair because of bad knees and has made few public appearances since turning over control of the team to Hal last November. Steinbrenner attended the first two games of the World Series but watched the Game 6 clincher from his home in Tampa.

To #78... WTF are you talkiing about? Exploiting players of color? Yeah, I'd hate to be making millions in the majors right now. Is this the tripe they are teaching in college these days? Sounds like your sociology prof is a disgruntled man of color.

The Mets: Should go after both Jason Marques {Rockies} and Joel Piniero {Cards} real hard. Next Bengie Molina as the new catcher. After this pickup both Marcus Thames {Detroit} and Brad Penny {Cards} the outlay about 35 to 40 million a year for 5 players just about the same coming off the book this year. The Mets could trade off some of the players on a below average pitching staff while bring in the better players.

The Yankees: Should go after Jason Bay {Boston} for Left field. After this Pick up both Ben Sheets {2008 / Brewers} and Justin Duchscherer {2008 / Oakland}. Let Damion and Matsui go as free agents, and bring up from the minors for replacements. Also sign all other Yankee free agents.

OK, first off George Steinbrenner did not start the Free Agent System in baseball. This was done by MLB itself in dealing with the Oakland A's and Jim Catfish Hunter. The Yankee's as all the teams do is follow the rules of The Free Agent System in use today. The Yankees are also charged by MLB to pay back to the small market teams millions of dollars each year to equal out the playing field. This money should be going to attain players for these teams. Is it the Yankees fault if the money goes into the pockets of the team owners and not for the players to equal the playing field, and MLB does nothing about it ? Now look at your own team and ask why the team does not even try to pick up players or just pick up soso players and keep the money in the pocket. These teams keep the money and don't care what type team is put on the field, and don't care if fans come out to the park to watch the team. Why is this? Because the team makes more money by being a crap team in a small market than an average to good team in a small market. The team would have to spend more. Look at Pittsburgh with Jason Bay, if he were kept on that team look at the money going out to him as a free agent 17 to 18 millon per year. If Pittsburgh had kept the other good players that it had and not given away for nothing like they did with Bay, they would be a top team by now and able to afford the players. Fans would be loading the park at every game like in the days of "We are Family". The teams that spend and have good teams get the fans to come to the games. The teams that keep the money in the pockets of the Owners, have little fan support and bad teams. Is it really the Yankee's, Red Sox's, Met's fault where the money goes, look at the small market teams and the comissioner of MLB.

Mauer power will be in the stadium in 2011. either Granderson in 2010 or Carl Crawford in 2011 will also be there. since the Sawx are screwing with Matsui, don't forget to drive up the price for Jason Bay(snicker, snicker)

    what, who cares?
Let Christmas begin as the yankers sign chapman, lackey, holliday, trade for halliday, then sign mauer too!
That way those fans are satisfied and get their 28th-30th the next 3 years, for a 4-peat festivus in 2012! This will set into effect the mayan world prediction might happen, except only in the MLB realm.
I n2012 the wheels are in place, all opposition will simply forfeit to the yankees who represent the entire AL in the AllStar game, and they go a perfect 162-0 in 2012...the gods will strike them out and Quetzalcoatl will breathe fire onto that team forever....all hail the Mayan prediction.

The Yankees won the World Series in 2009!! What's your point?

Thanks George. You made some bad moves, you made some good moves. The important thing was, you made moves. You are a winner and now the Yankees are once again. Enjoy #27.

People enough is enough. The Yanks buy players, the Red Sox buy players, so do the Phils, LA, Atlanta, Detroit and I can name another 24 teams that buy players. no one has been exempt from doing it so get over it already. There are no breaking of any rules so it is what it is. The Yanks also pay the special tax for going over a certain amount so stop @#$%ing about it like a bunch of whiny little girls!

heartbreak kid.....in 2008, Boston had 8 players on the all-star team to 3 Yanks, and Boston had 6 to 3 Yanks in 2009. Philly had 5 in 2009. So much for "your"winning formula when one has a bunch of "All Sars" on their team.

Good, now get my long term payoff ready and you can cut the boring and where you got them from, antiquated side tracks. Other things easily can be pursued in a manner similar to your own.. Clever businessman?? Now just write it out, it was well earned.

Yellowstone, not many people talk about the '43 World Series in part because there was this war thing going on.

I heard it was a big one.

Did anyone ever think without the luxury taxes that these high spenders generate that there may not be small market teams?I would think that some of these teams survive off the Yankees, Boston ,Mets, LA etc....If anyone has been to a Pittsburgh game on a wednesday night in september knows what Iam talking about.
I thought I would throw that out there.

Actually, a Brewer-Royals World Series would be ridiculously exciting if they were both fielding the top team in their respective league.

Few people recall that the World Series that received the highest television share occurred in 1980 between the Royals and the Phillies. Of course, it was the great players that drew the audience like Rose, Carlton and Brett,
    not the cities.

Similarly, almost no one talks about the 1943 World Champion New York Yankees, since it wasn't a particularly star-studded team.

For all you yankee haters that think there should be an enforced salary cap to make things more competitive on the field, I have one question for you. Would a Kansas City Royal - Milwaukee Brewer World Series be that exciting? I say get rid of half the teams and the rest keep spending as much as you want. Go Yankees!
