A-Rod chokes up when receiving playoffs MVP award

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Alex Rodriguez(notes) looked at the award he just received from Babe Ruth’s granddaughter with big eyes and a broad grin. It was as if he almost couldn’t believe it was his.

“Postseason MVP. Wow,” Rodriguez said Saturday night. Pausing for effect he added, “What’s next, the good guy award?”

Less than a year ago, it would have been difficult to decide which would be more preposterous for the troubled star to earn.

Rodriguez completed a tumultuous season that began with an awkward confession to past steroid use and then hip surgery that kept him out until May by being selected the winner of the Babe Ruth Award as the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s postseason MVP.

A-Rod picked up the hardware at the 87th annual New York baseball writers’ dinner Saturday night.

Rodriguez used his time away from the team to rehabilitate his hip as a period of reflection. He returned with a mantra: simplify things.

And after he told fans at the dinner that “he’d stick to the script of 2009 and keep it very, very brief,” he choked up, taking a long pause—save for a nervous laugh—to look down at the podium and smile awkwardly.

Unlike the extended pause he took during his steroids news conference, this one was broken when an attendee—the dinner was crowded with Yankees fans— shouted, “You’re the best, A-Rod!”

Rodriguez batted .365 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 15 games in the postseason, quickly putting to rest his reputation for failing when it mattered most—he had 8 for 59 (.136) in the postseason since 2004 before going on a tear to lead New York to its 27th title.

Rodriguez thanked the fans for being patient with him after helping the Yankees win their first title since 2000. It was his first trip to the World Series in a 16-year career. He joined the Yankees in ’04.

The three-time American League MVP took great pleasure in this award.

“I’ve been to these dinners a couple of times to receive MVP awards and those, I’m very proud of those accomplishments,” he said. “But none of those accomplishments will ever compare to the feeling you get from being part of a team that won a world championship. Like Albert (Pujols), said there’s nothing like winning a World championship.”

Pujols was at the dinner to pick up his award for NL MVP. Minnesota’s Joe Mauer(notes) collected the AL MVP and the Sid Mercer-Dick Young Player of the Year Award.

During his routine, comedian and writer Bill Scheft told Mauer, who will be a free agent after the 2010 season, that all New York airports were closed and that he’ll have to stay until 2015.

Mauer’s dad Jake Mauer, who bought his first tuxedo for the event, said his family wasn’t going to push Joe to stay in Minnesota.

“Wherever he’s happy, we’re happy,” Jake Mauer said.

Among those on the dais were the Angels’ Mike Scioscia and the Rockies’ Jim Tracy, managers of the year.

Scioscia dedicated his award to the Angels’ 22-year-old rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart(notes), who died in a car accident on April 9.

Former Yankees third baseman Aaron Boone(notes) received one of the loudest ovations of the night when he picked up the Arthur and Milton Richman You Gotta Have Heart Award. Boone had heart surgery this season and was able to return to the field for the Houston Astros in September.

Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur(notes) won the Ben Epstein-Dan Castellano Good Guy Award, and teammate Carlos Beltran(notes) got the Joan Payson Award for community service. Beltran was not in attendance because he had knee surgery last week.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter(notes) was not at the dinner to collect his Joe DiMaggio Toast of the Town Award. He also shared the Willie, Mickey and the Duke Award with teammates Jorge Posada(notes), Mariano Rivera(notes) and Andy Pettitte(notes) as the core four of the Yankees championship teams.

Don Zimmer, whose big league career began in 1954 with the Brooklyn Dodgers won the William J. Slocum-Jack Lang Award for long and meritorious service.

Wow!!!! lots of talk about A-Rod and not deserving the Award for the MVP in the playoffs...Look at it this way, what if? The Redsox had gotten A-Rod...wow, I wonder if the Sox nation would be screaming about his roid useage when it wasn't against the rules....mmmmmm oh I see he's a Yankee and wow he was one part of helping us win our 27th WS...mmmmmmm one mentioned, though not against the rules back to to taking it, but it was against the law!! if so, why wasn't he arrested and charged for taking 'roids' Oh, by the way, why wasn't there any kind of charges brought against ours who has taken it....Tell, you that 'roids' isn't against the law to doesn't it. They us it in hospitals, or dr can give your a perscription for it, to help with different kinds of illnesses and injuries. Learn your facts about what is and isn't against the law. If it was then NLB failed to do their job for not turning in any player for using it. The reason why Bonds is in the fed courts is because he lied about it. He's going to court for false testimony and purjury. Same as Roger Clemens, you lie to a Grand Jury or to Congeress, you are subject to being charged. If both would of just came out and said yes I did take them, both wouldn't be in the spot they are in. Remember, Roid's is against the rules in Sports. But, if you lie under oath, then you step into a whole other arena. Least not forget the Oritz was found to have taken them as well. Wow...Sox fans rallies around him...Big Papi, can't be taking roids' no way...but he did so get over it and move on. NYY are winners and they proved that this year, and those poor sox got beat in the first round of the playoffs....wow, they just wansn't good eough to go forth...oh yeah that reminds, me they had a great player in Jason Bay, why on earth would they let him to go? Oh, yeah, don't want to pay the money. Goes back to the fact other teams has the money to pay, but refuses to for reasons who knows. What do these other teams do with all the Money....that the Yankees give them....I don't see any other teams giving money to the Yankees....Cry about the money all you want, but when the truth hits you square in the forehead, don't go whinng about it. It's there, complain to your team about it.

Post Season MVP. Congrats Alex on a job well done. He destroyed the best closers in the game, Nathan, Fuentes, Lidge. This award could have gone to Matsui, Jeter, Mariano. That's why the Yankees are so good. It's one fantastic team. Watch out for Tex next year. He's had his first year with the Yanks, now watch him go!!

I don't like the Yankees, but I have always liked their players. I like to watch A-Rod play. At least he was truthful and admitted it. I remember when beer was the biggest substance abuse by the Yanks. Long live baseball, and I hope the Yanks finish runner-ups.

I love how they complain about how Yankees buy their players. Well geesh... I don't see any players going to other teams and like "oh, I'll play here for free"
Every team buys their players... The Yanks do have money but their are amazing players out there that other teams outbid the Yankees. Other teams have the money to get their fair share... They do have lots of money but they do have a budget. I mean, some goes to the small team market and what not too. Just please, You don't gotta like the Yankees, but keep your ignorant comments to yourselves... thanks.

To all Yankee haters. The Yankees are only doing what is necessary for them to do to continue to win. Who wouldn't buy the best team that money could buy. The other teams should take notes and learn something from them. GO YANKEES!

I know a rod isnt the only one that did them and i dont think anyone who took roids should get any award and the fact eveyone defends themselves and says they used them to stay healthy but they didnt help my performance on the field are completely full of sh$t. These guys are all jacked up with the best stuff money can buy and have the best trainers to help them reach the top of thier sports. Ill give you two examples Barry Bonds was a great player hit 330 great fielder sure fire hall of famer gets jealous of mc gwire and sosa gets on roids goes from 20 - 30 hrs to 70 plus. I m from b more so some of you might not rememeber Jay sorry ass Gibbons below average player gets all juiced up has one decent year cashes in big steroid testing starts shrinks up like a prune couldnt even play independent league baseball at age28

Here's something to think about. The yankees have such a big payroll, that every year they millions to the other baseball owners in fines so they acn have money to spend on players. If they had the same payroll as every other team, where would the other teams get their extra money to spend? Think about that for awhile.

First of all, no one can deny the history and tradition of the Yankees. In this age of instant gratification, flash in the pan celebrity with no emphasis on substance, you have to respect the tradition. Furthermore, A-rod was the best player in the post-season last year and so is deserving of the award. However, I think the real question now is what new, untraceable performance enhancing drug have the chemists created for cheaters to use. Sorry, it will forever be the age of cynicism in athletics as far as I'm concerned. BTW, Go Colts!

Most of you have NO idea what the hell you're talking about. 1st of all.....more than half of the players have used steroids*, therefore, it does not make a difference. 2nd of all.....If it wasn't for the YANKEES there would not be small market teams because the Yankees pay the BIG bucks for the small teams to exist. and 3rd of all.....yes its true $$$ does not guarantee championships but thanx to the Yankees their is baseball. I love the Yankees, so either you hate them or love them.

    *steroid era

How can you call it cheating? When he used steroids there was no rule against it. Was he the only one using? No, not by a long shot. Why don't you hate the others who did it? Oh, I forgot, there not Yankees. Cry me a river, build me a bridge and get over it.
