Rivera throws bullpen session

TORONTO (AP)—Yankees closer Mariano Rivera(notes) threw “almost 20 pitches” in a bullpen session Saturday and reported no pain in his sore left groin, meaning he might be able to return to the mound Sunday.

“I wasn’t expecting to feel anything,” Rivera said before the Yankees played the Blue Jays. “That’s how minor everything was. I just have to make sure that it’s ready.”

Rivera, 1-2 with a 1.78 ERA and a major-league leading 38 saves, first began to feel sore Aug. 15 in Seattle. The 39-year-old has pitched in five games since then and has converted a personal-best 34 save opportunities in a row overall.

Rivera, who last pitched since Tuesday at Baltimore, threw in the outfield Thursday and Friday.

Manager Joe Girardi said he would consult with the training staff before deciding whether to use Rivera Sunday.

Also Saturday, the Yankees purchased the contract of right-hander Josh Towers(notes) from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, adding him to the 40-man roster. Catcher Kevin Cash(notes) was released to make room for Towers.

Towers, who was pulled from his start Thursday after just two innings, spent one day with the Yankees in August but did not pitch before returning to the minors.

Girardi said the move was made to add depth to New York’s bullpen, which has worked 10 2-3 innings the past two days.

“(Towers) can give us some distance if we need it,” Girardi said. “Or, if we need an inning, he can give us an inning.”

The Blue Jays also made a roster move Saturday, activating third baseman Edwin Encarnacion(notes) off the 15-day disabled list and putting into the lineup against the Yankees.

Acquired from Cincinnati on July 31, Encarnacion was placed on the DL on Aug. 21 with a sore left hamstring. He is batting .186 with one homer and three RBIs since joining Toronto.

Forget Mitre. Burnett is the weak link. His last 5 or 6 starts have been less than Williamsport-esque. The offense bailed him out 3 times in Baltimore, he talked smack to Pie for the cheese Pie deposited into the stands @ Camden Yards and he left Texiera high and dry on a diving play in Baltimore by not covering the bag. Trade him to the circus where he belongs and his shaving cream pies are welcomed!!

And yes, I am a Yankees fan!

He can now hold a butt plug in his az with no pain for his full 2 innings? Nice that's on the Jeter, Arod level. Next he will be able to walk around daily with one...

I agree w/ya #7 Mitre didn't look bad last night. Sure he left a couple of sinkers up in the zone but that may just be from trying too hard. If he can settle down (and keep the sinker down) he may be valuable.
    GO YANKS!!!!

Give away every 5th game? If you've be payin attention, we've won 3 of Mitre's 4 starts. His first innings suck for the most part, then he is able to get it together. For a number 5 starter coming off of surgery, he hasn't been too bad. He's go a good sinking fastball and his breaking stuff isn't bad. Give him a little time and he could be solid. Plus, the Yanks only need 4 pitchers in the playoffs. I like how its shaping up so far.

Gotta dump Mitre. We can't give away every 5th game thinking the offense can get us out of the harm this guy throws every 5 days. Get with it, Joe and Cash. We can't let this drag on or we'll get squished down the line. Go get someone who can pitch. We have a definite shot this year, don't toss it because of some half-brain idea that Mitre can pitch.
