Chamberlain to pitch in relief Sunday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)—New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain(notes) is scheduled to work in relief Sunday and appears headed to the bullpen for the first round of the playoffs.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Saturday that Chamberlain will pitch an inning or face a couple batters in the regular-season finale against Tampa Bay. Girardi said Chamberlain is “in the mix” for a bullpen spot for the opening round.

“I think it can give you a better idea of what you’re going to get,” Girardi said. “We’d use him as we saw fit. From day to day it could change.”

Chamberlain went 9-6 with a 4.78 ERA in 31 starts. His workload was limited and he wound pitching in 156 1-3 innings.

The right-hander made his major league-debut in 2007 as the setup man for closer Mariano Rivera(notes), posting an 0.38 ERA over 19 games. Chamberlain started last season in the bullpen before joining the rotation on June 3.

“It’s not something new, so I have plan on what I need to do to get ready because I’ve done it before,” Chamberlain said. “That’s the advantage that I have. Just come to the ballpark, have the idea you’re probably going to pitch in a game and go from there.”

When asked if Sunday might be an audition for the postseason, Chamberlain said, “There’s always somebody wanting to take your job, and that’s the great part of this team, we push each other so much.”

“That’s something I look forward to,” he said.

The Yankees will likely need just three starters for the divisional series. CC Sabathia(notes) will start the opener for the AL East champions. Andy Pettitte(notes) and A.J. Burnett(notes) will pitch the next two games, although it hasn’t been determined in which order.

Girardi said the first-round opponent will be one factor in the Game 2 and 3 starter. The earliest the team will find its opposition will be Sunday because Detroit and Minnesota, one of which will face the Yankees, remain in a tight race for the AL Central championship.

So ESPN can air what, Texas_Hurricane? The over-paid millionaires of the National Felons League (NFL) who can't even sign there own names because they spent four years pretending to be "student athletes" in NCAA football. Because God knows that we don't get enough of that every Saturday. If we're such a bunch of boring idiots why are you even taking the time to read the article and post a comment? No football game on?

How about Joba and Mitre pitching the same day? Both don't seem to have more than 3 innings in them. Maybe between the two you could get to the 6th or with luck the 7th inning. As for the other starter needed, almost anyone else on the roster might give the yankees a better chance and maybe save the bullpen a little. Neither of these guys give good odds of a win on their starts.

It seems to me a good way to tax your bullpen. If he can only pitch 3 innings he might be more suited as a long reliever. I am a yankee fan and can see this being a problem playoff time. Do you really want to use 3 or 4 relievers in a close game If the starter is doing ok?

As a Red Sox fan, I could see an advantage to the Yanks' limiting Joba to 5 innings a game. But the baseball purist in me says, "Let him pitch!" I think of Nolan Ryan throwing well over 300 innings a year on a fairly regular basis in the 1970s. It's not like he was tossing the knuckler like Wakefield, Ryan's fastball was a max-effort pitch. Maybe today's pitching coaches ARE too soft on players...

This is what does not make sense to me. You have a pitch limit per game and know yo9u have an inning limit per year. So if he takes 100 pitches for 5 innings he can pitch as many as 8 games to get to 40 innings but if he uses 100 pitches to pitch 8 innings he can only pitch 5 games to get to 40 innings. In the first case he throws 800 pitches and in the later case he only throws 500 pitches.

Brilliant, come right out and tell the opposing team he can only go so many innings. They will take pitches and run him even earlier and in turn run down the pen.

Hippie...6 innings is considered a "quality start" by managers, coaches, & scouts in this day/age of having 7th inning guys, set-up guys, & closers.

All things considered...50% ain't bad for a guy in his 1st full season as a starter.

Justin...I said I've never seen him pitch more than 6 innings. No, I didn't go look up how many innings he has pitched this year. If you defense is that he has pitched more than 6 innings in half of his starts..that's pretty weak. That makes him mediocre at best.

I don't think there should be any Joba Rules. He is a major league pitcher and should pitch every 5th day just like the other Yankee starters. There is always a risk of injury and there's no guarantee that he won't get injured even if you reduce his innings. Besides, I think he'd become a better pitcher with better command if he were on a regular schedule

J is scumbag a lot has been banned numerous times thru the season. He's an immature little teenage douchebag that hides behind a keyboard & think he can talk s--t about everything to a bunch of adults.

His Mommy & Daddy have already gotten e-mails from Yahoo support & they promised to keep him off the computer since he's still 14 or 15 & hasn't passed the 6th grade. I hope karma bites him in th a-s very soon!

Joba has made 24 starts this seson...12 of them, he's lasted at least 6 innings. Post 49...you need to do your research before talking smack! Even if they limit his innings (got 6 starts left)...the key is to keep him in a regular turn. Watch the confidence he has come Sunday!
