Hamels clarifies remarks that cause a stir

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Cole Hamels(notes) isn’t ready to call it a season.

Hamels wants to pitch again if the Philadelphia Phillies need him against the New York Yankees in the World Series. It would be the struggling left-hander’s turn to take the mound in Game 7 on Thursday.

Hamels angered fans and created a stir on talk radio with his comments after his latest poor outing Saturday night. He clarified those remarks after the Phillies avoided elimination with an 8-6 victory in Game 5 on Monday night.

“Sometimes I might not say the best things or the smartest things, but I’ve learned and am learning,” Hamels said. “I wasn’t able to sleep the past couple of nights because of it.”

Hamels allowed five runs over 4 1-3 innings in an 8-5 loss in Game 3. Last year’s World Series and NLCS MVP, he’s 1-2 with a 7.58 ERA in four starts this postseason after going 10-11 in the regular season.

“I can’t wait for it to end,” Hamels said after the game. “It’s been mentally draining. At year’s end, you just can’t wait for a fresh start.”

Many took that comment and ran with it. But Hamels talked for about 30 minutes to groups of reporters and also said he looked forward to the possibility of redeeming his season in Game 7.

Hamels reached out to manager Charlie Manuel to make sure they were on the same page.

“I went to Charlie just to talk to him because that’s who I am, and I think he understands that,” Hamels said. “I just wanted to tell him my true thoughts — that I’ll never ever quit. I want to play this game until somebody takes it away from me.

“I think Charlie knows me. He has managed me for quite a few years. I think the only doubt it left in people’s minds were the fans, and you know, it hurts. I love the city of Philadelphia, I play as hard as I possibly can. I might not necessarily have the results that they hope (for), but I know that if I go out there, and do everything I possibly can, and in the end they see (that), then I think they can respect that.”

to all u guys ripping hamels, ur probably worthless yankees fans anyway. its too easy to be a fan of a team with a payroll of 300 plus million. sad part about it is that they are still having a tough time with da lil ol phillies. the yankees suck bad for having such a high payroll. they should have a 130 wins. mabe the marlins can come in a spank dat ass next year with there 20 million dollar payroll. if the phillies force a game 7. one thing to think about is the yanks have never won a game 7. so hopefully they will leave the stadium thurs. the losers that they are.

Jack, u must be 2nd hand high from all the crack ur mom smokes. Hammels doesnt want to play anymore. He wants to quit. He's a quitter Jack. And a crybaby. The Phillies are gonna lose bc Hammels is a quitter.

Jack its ok to like the Yankees. We always try to win and often do. We don't steal signs and we don't make stupid mistakes like forgetting to cover a base. We always come back and our closer usually makes sure the other team doesn't.

People need to relax. This guy was frustrated with his poor play and is looking forward to a fresh start once the season is over. So what? He still wants to win the Series. How quickly we forget that he brought us a Series last year. Cut him some slack. It was one sentence among the millions of things he says and thinks. It doesn't define him and is not the end of the world.

This blog is great! Every possible opinion! Anybody else notice all the chicks posting here, usually sympathetic to Cole? Kinda unusual for a sports blog. Gives me a different perspective -- I was mad at Cole, but heck, maybe baseball needs a little soap opera, broaden the fan base, something for everybody. I like Myers, too, scrappy, he'll be back. Go Phils!

I think Hamels doesn't want to lose. I also think since the season is almost overhe wants to practice more on his pitching. I'm only ten, I'm Jack. Jill is my Mom.

“I can’t wait for it to end,” Hamels said after the game. “It’s been mentally draining. At year’s end, you just can’t wait for a fresh start.”

Exactly how is that taken out of context? He said it. Its the WORLD SERIES he's playing in.

Somebody please put in the right context so i understand.

I do not like what hamels said either but I am sick and tired of the media taking things out of
context. I know he was the hero last year but this is this year and we are trying to repeat, you can start hamels in game 7 if we get there but pull him as soon as he has trouble, the phillies still have a
    chance

LMAO Don K you are too funny thank you very much for the rousing conversation it actually made me laugh. The thing is win or lose Cole will be Cole the Yankees will still suck b*lls and suvivor and the Dodgers with roid and drama queen Manny have always sucked and will always suck. I've enjoyed listening to phillies baseball for about 10 years now even though my favorite team is the Twins (my hometown team) I think thats why I like philly so much is they are just like the Twins a lower budget team that makes ish happen. Scrappy underdogs if you will. I thank you very much for responding to my posts and hope to have many more rousing confrontations with you in the future.
