Yankees win World Series crown, Matsui drives in 6

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Yankees have won the World Series, beating the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 behind Hideki Matsui’s(notes) record-tying six RBIs.

Andy Pettitte(notes) won the clincher Wednesday night, pitching the Yankees to their elusive 27th championship and first since 2000.

Matsui homered, doubled and singled, and tied Bobby Richardson’s 49-year-old record for RBIs in a Series game. His two-run homer off Pedro Martinez(notes) in the second inning started the Yankees on their way.

Mariano Rivera(notes), Derek Jeter(notes) and Alex Rodriguez(notes) helped the Yankees wrap up a most successful season in their first year at the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.

    children, children...... such language!
There is still at least one game to go! So sit back, relax and hope your team wins.
That is if your team is still playing. Many posts here are from 'external' sources and are spewing
hatred out of fustration and obvious depression. My sympathies for your losing season....
But, as far as homegrown talent goes, let's not forget the Yank DYNASTIES of the past and the more
recent largely 'homegrown' teams under Torre. Four of those players are still in the lineup:
Jeter, Posada, Pettite, Rivera, all 'home grown' and future Hall Of Famers. And this could be the start of yet another dynasty.
Not true of the World Champ Phillies though. And without Lee, whom was purchased, the series could be already over.

Money, money, money.......I won't go into money being re-invested and all that because a number of people here have done an excellent job in that regard.

What I WILL say, however, is that I don't give a rats ass HOW much you pay someone - they still have to produce, and the Yankee players PRODUCE as well as (if not better than) any team in Baseball - and THAT'S the real "bottom line".

Phillies fans complain about homegrown talent, but w/o the traded-for Cliff Lee you guys wouldn't have a win in the series.

A-Rod is the first player IN HISTORY to be hit by two pitches and hit a HR in the same World Series game. This guy is on fire!!!

By the way, was Charlie Emmanual drunk in the post game interview? LOL.....this guy may be mildly retarded.

Ahh mspoon, when you start to make a point, try to have your facts straight. The Red Sox were down 3-0 and they ended up winning the series. You make yourself sound like an idiot. Not that I agree with you, because the Yankees are clearly superior. You're also probably the person that will talk about the Yankees' payroll. Congrats for being the same as 95% of the country that don't understand how business works. If you run a good business, you make money. When you make money, you can invest in assets to help your business be more successful in the future. I can't believe the Yankees are considered an "Evil Empire" for this reason...

The 2009 World Series will go down in History as the most tainted Series since the "Black Sox'. The very first time instant replay is used in the history of Baseball, and the call goes in favor of Baseball's Darling A-Clod and the team that All of the organization of Baseball from Selig-the pig, down want desperately to win , the yankees. Any honest baseball fan should be outraged beyond words. This is Cheating so bare and open that any true yankee fan should be ashamed to be any part of this spitting on the honor of our national game. I am a Yankee fan and I'm sickened.

Thanks, Matt. The mantra-style is quite purposeful and is in response to the Yankee haters' style. They repeat the same whiny complaints (we buy wins, we get the calls, etc...), so I reflect their style and make them look into the mirror. The bottom line, however, is that my mantras are accurate..........the Yankees have been victims of bad calls, they do consist of more home grown players than the vast majority of other teams, etc... I think that it's natural for people that have failed in life to hate individuals or organizations that seem to win effortlessly, but I like to make them admit that they're failures....lol. Good night.

Why are all these Yankees fans bragging about being up one game???? Last time I look It takes four games to win the series. If I'm not mistaken, a few years ago the Yanks were up 3 to 1 on the RedSox and lost the series 4 to 3. This was the first time in history that a team came back from a 3 to 1 deficit. So Yankee fans please wait to the series is over.

Mike, my fellow Yankees fan, you crack me up. Not because you're ridiculous or annoying; far from it. I simply find your tenacity and mantra-like repetition in argument very amusing. I don't disagree with one iota of your remarks, however.

Yankees-haters don't have a hypothesis. They have a conclusion -- i.e. hate the Yankees -- and draw backwards from there to a given point. It's not a rational or logical point of view. It's simply blind regional hatred.

I, for one, can not understand how team fervor lapses into idiotic sectarian prejudice and hatred. Do I enjoy poking fun at the Red Sox? Sure I do, but I admire their mostly excellent teams of the last decade. For that matter, as a history buff, I admire their contributions to the founding of our great republic. Kansas City, where would we be without your jazz? San Francisco, where would we be without the Dead Kennedys?

Life is too precious a thing to view solely through baseball eyes. And baseball is too precious a thing to view through one team's eyes. Philadelphia, thank you for Mike Schmidt. Boston, thank you for Ted Williams. Cincinatti, thank you for Pete Rose. See what I'm getting at here?

Oh, and thanks to the Yankees for pretty much everything else. :)

Cole Hamels was staked to an early 3-0 lead and failed miserably maintaining it as he was roughed up in his 5 innings of work while embarrassingly giving up the tying run to, of all people, Andy Petit and left trailing 5-3 while the Phillies never recouped as the game got even further away in the later innings when a decent outing was all that was needed to be victorious. Expect a much better effort by the Phils in game 4.

There is little doubt that the Yankees are home grown, an efficient business and victim of MLB umpiring crews. This is why it's ironic that they are attacked for purchasing wins or being an MLB favorite. The Yankees win, because they work hard, have players with great character, have wonderful team chemistry and a winning culture. Any business could learn many lessons from watching what the Steinbrenner Family has built here. Go Yanks!!!

sorry to break your spirits daniel but... this team IS homegrown
mlb.com did an article over 2 months ago on teams with most homegrown players.... and guess who was first? THE YANKEES... with over 50% of their players ...
almost all of the bullpen is homegrown and is one of the main reasons the yankees are in the world series... the starting rotation during the season pettitte, chamberlain combined for 23 wins this season...
cabrera and gardner had 4 walk off hits combined this season... aceves had 10 wins OUT OF THE BULLPEN, cano hit 320 during the season, dont even get me started on jeter and posada, hughes had an ERA under 2.50 out of the bullpen...
so sorry daniel this team with some exceptions like in ANY team IS homegrown...
