Twins activate Crede, promote Gabino and Huber

TORONTO (AP)—The Minnesota Twins have activated third baseman Joe Crede(notes) from the 15-day disabled list and are adding two players from Triple-A Rochester, recalling right-hander Armando Gabino(notes) and purchasing the contract of first baseman/outfielder Justin Huber(notes).

The Twins are expected to add another arm to their bullpen Wednesday by activating left-hander Francisco Liriano(notes) from the DL.

Crede, out since Aug. 21 due to a sore lower back, is batting .229 with 15 homers and 48 RBIs. After fielding grounders and taking part in batting practice Monday, Crede got a look at live pitching Tuesday when he stood in the box during a simulated game for Liriano, who has not pitched since Aug. 17 because of arm fatigue.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Liriano threw 42 pitches in about 10 or 12 minutes and reported no problems.

“I stood in the outfield for a little bit and then I got right behind the mound,” Gardenhire said. “The guys were saying it was jumping out of his hand pretty good.”

Liriano, 5-12 with a 5.80 ERA in 23 starts, will pitch in relief when he is activated and will be available Thursday.

Twins catcher Joe Mauer(notes), who leads the major leagues with a .369 batting average, got the day off Tuesday and is expected to be the designated hitter on Wednesday, Gardenhire said.

Gabino made one start for the Twins earlier this season, allowing four runs and five hits in 2 2-3 innings of an Aug. 25 victory over Baltimore.

Huber, who has also played for Kansas City and San Diego, hit .273 with 22 home runs and 76 RBIs at Triple-A.

Reddy won't be back with the twins next year. Morales will be hear for good. Thjey will trade or pick up free agents in the off season for 2nd base, shortstop and possibly 3rd base. Delmon Young will also be gone next year.

I honestly think that they are going to keep Morales in the organization for a trade option in the future, he has a dependable bat and his catching skills are decent but the Twins have Joe Mauer and a dependable veteran backup in Mike Redmond at the major league level. I would say they hang on to him for one more year and wait to see what happens with Mauer's contract, if Mauer stays then I would think Morales would be dealt to another team. If the Twins can't sign Mauer then I think Morales will be seeing more time in the majors.

I really hope that Crain can keep it together this time around, he is definately better than some of the options we have in the bullpen right now.

As for the Halladay dream.....yep it was only a dream. We can't afford him. The only possible trade option I would see for him would cost us all of our young pitching prospects and probably Morales, and at least one of our regulars at the major league level such as Cuddyer, Kubel, etc. I wouldn't warrant giving up either of the M&M boys because they are to potent of a combination in the lineup.

Maybe we could convince Radke to come back for 60 or so games to help keep the young pitching staff in line ....lol

It would be a shame not to engineer some sort of trade for a 2nd baseman and some middle relief. If I had to pick one or the other, I'd take a quality second baseman. It shouldn't take that much to win the AL Central this year.

Mulvey isn't on the 40 man roster - wonder who they will remove or possibly move Bonser to the 60 day DL.

I believe the move was made not out of disrespect to him but rather to keep him in the Twins organization. After this season you have to think that Reddy will not get re-signed (at least as a player, hopefully as a coach though). He will definitely be a Sept. call up, he's proven he deserves that much.

i don't understand demoting Jose Morales...perhaps he has to hit 500; are his catching skills subpar?

Its too bad the Twins don't have extra space on the roster because we can sure use Jose Morales as a pinch hitter!
