Punto’s gaffe dooms Twins in Metrodome finale

  • Print

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The Minnesota Twins ran themselves right out of the Metrodome.

Nick Punto’s(notes) baserunning blunder cost the Twins a chance to tie the game in the eighth inning, and the New York Yankees eliminated Minnesota with a 4-1 victory Sunday night in their division series that shut the doors for good on professional baseball in the raucous, quirky ballpark.

After the Yankees took their celebration into the clubhouse, the Twins’ grounds crew began digging up home plate for delivery to their new open-air stadium and closer Joe Nathan(notes) scooped up a handful of dirt from the mound.

“Just something to bring to the new stadium and sprinkle that on the new mound, bring a little history into the new place,” Nathan said.

With the Twins trailing 2-1 in the eighth, Punto led off the inning with a double. Denard Span(notes) followed with a grounder up the middle that Punto likely thought was headed for the outfield, and he rounded third base and headed for home.

But Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter(notes), who always seems to be in the middle of the biggest plays of the fall, cut it off and fired home.

Punto ran right through third base coach Scott Ullger’s stop sign, then slammed on the brakes when catcher Jorge Posada(notes) caught Jeter’s throw. Posada quickly threw to third baseman Alex Rodriguez(notes) to get Punto sliding back into the bag for the out.

Orlando Cabrera(notes) flied out to center field and Joe Mauer(notes) grounded out to first to end the inning and the Twins’ last best chance to avoid being swept out of the playoffs.

“I heard 55,000 people screaming so I felt like the ball got through,” Punto said. “I wanted to dig a hole, crawl inside it and hide. It’s embarrassing. That can’t happen.”

The loss was a disappointing finish to a memorable 28-year run for the Twins in a ballpark that gave birth to the Homer Hanky and carried the team to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991.

What this mass of concrete and plastic lacked in charm and amenities, it made up for in atmosphere. With a baseball-colored roof that wreaked havoc on opposing fielders and a boisterous crowd that made it sound like a 747 was taking off from a runway in the outfield, the “Thunderdome” earned a reputation as one of the few true home-field advantages in baseball.

“We’re gonna miss it. But hey, we’re going outside,” Punto said. “It’s going to be great for the fans. But you can’t really simulate 55,000 people cheering and almost bringing the house down. It feels like, at times, the Metrodome was just going to crumble.”

The Twins were 11-1 under the big, white Teflon roof during their title runs in ’87 and ’91, but the building appeared to lose some of that mystique and influence as the team enjoyed a resurgence at the turn of the century.

Minnesota lost the final eight postseason games played here, dating back to Game 1 of the ALCS against the Angels in 2002.

It was fitting that it was the Yankees who pulled the curtain on the Dome’s colorful baseball career. They have owned this place since Minnesota’s return to competitiveness in 2002, going 23-11 here since Ron Gardenhire took over as Twins manager.

Five of those victories have come in the postseason, including two each in 2003 and 2004.

After a deflating 11-inning loss to the Yankees in the Bronx that put them on the brink of elimination, the Twins were hoping to harness a little most of that old Metrodome magic to get back into this series.

There just wasn’t any left.

“It was a great run this place had,” first baseman Michael Cuddyer(notes) said. “It went away kicking and screaming.”

Every time you turned around Mauer was getting hits. Looks like he got our attention for next year, right Cash? The Phils look scary good, although they did lose a game unlike any other playoff winners. They are the best team besides the yanks. But Id rather see LA, if just for the sweet irony of Torre, and if we did get beat by him it would be a bittersweet loss.

Ever notice that the peskiest players vs the yanks are ex yanks? Had to notice the great pitching from Pavano as he tied up the sluggers with wicked stuff. Now here comes Abreu ( and bro of ex Weaver), you know they will have alot to prove too. This is because certain players kill the yanks, and then they go out and get those players who then underperform for them (Tino excepted) so they end up letting them go. Boston has gotten hip to that, and they try to get the players who hurt the yanks too (Manny). But we have had the last laugh getting Damon and before that Boggs and Roger C. If the sox had got Texiera, this season would have been whole lot different, but thank god we prevailed. I think we got the best opponent between boston and the angels, the cali pitching isnt as strong as sox, but we had owned the sox towards the end of the season. Should be a close match, we will win it thanks to late inning power heroics that are our trademark this year. And our pitching of course.

Unless Manny starts hitting philly will be too much for the dodgers and the yankees pitching too much for angels. Philly in 6 yanks in 5 , I could be wrong about how many games . Would love to see yankees against the dodgers .

going to miss the Metrodome with a passion, I don't understand how they are building an outdoor stadium for a team that plays in temperatures below 32 degrees, it just doesn't make sense to me..

I love hearing all the twins fans cry about bad calls. It was fine when that ball hit Brandon Inge and the call went thier way, but let it happen to them and they think the world is going to end. They got what they deserved.

I think that it should be a east-coast west-coast world series, just to have the whole country involved. As far as people saying Angles-Dodgers, how about a Yankees-Dodgers world series matchup? As you can tell with the east-east match up from last year, no one even watched the damn game because it was just the east. Think about that.

I dont want replay even if it would have turned out better for us in this series. It is part of the lore of baseball--the umpires. Life isn't perfect and neither are the umpires. Sometimes the DMV screws up, the police screw up, the gov't screws up. But life goes on, of course, unless you sue everyone in sight for utopia's sake. The Yankees were a superior team-- for that payroll they better be--but sometimes guts and heart is better than talent. Guts and Heart plus mistakes is never better than a more talented club. We gave it a great ride with what we had and the Twins and baseball should be proud of that. The Yankees may have swept the series but they earned the right to go on. They hit well in big situations and pitched well all series long. They stepped up and played like the Yankees ought to play. I don't like the Yankees but hats off to them, they played well and their stars shined.

I agree the umpiring during this 2009 Playoffs has be horrible, between the strike zones, the the Maurer double, Utley foul off his leg, Check swing strike call on hunter, the tag by Youk & ump calling player safe and many others. I think MLB needs to do something maybe add instant replay not just for HRs or suspend umpires for really screwing up or send em back to school, at least in the NFL coaches get a challenge flag. Maybe do something like that, if they had the Change of the Minnesota/Yankees would have been far more different and I'm a Sox fan. Way to Go Umps for screwing up the post-season.

the umpiring stinks just look at the philly game and utely fouling that ball off himself an the ump missed it that changed the course of the game, how can you say the foul ball call in the twin game didnt matter it changes everything not just your team but all teams playing they need replays period whether ur a tiger an twin or yankee fan whatever fan u r they have to get the calls right

The call in the second game did not give the yankees the win...who knows what happens if he calls that ball fair...if you want to say everything after would have been the same then...the twins get 2 hits after, get 1 run, then 3 straight outs with no one advancing..teixeira hits a leadoff homer to tie it and the yankees have arod, matsui, swisher, cano, melky and posada up with no out and a chance to win it...the twins would have blown it just like they blew the whole series...i give them credit for making the best of it w/ a great regular season run without morneau, but they had no business winning game 1, 2 or 3 in that series so don't make excuses

Am a Tiger fan who doesn't blame the umps or one missed call for not winning. We made a few base running mistakes ourselves in the playoffs vs. the Twins. We had plenty of opportunity to win but could not deliver key hits. That problem haunted us the entire month of September.
Twins pitching collapsed, their clutch hitters left 17 OB in Game Two.

I don't buy the argument that they didn't deserve to be in the playoffs. They earned it but they were obviously up against a superior team.

Like the Tigers the Twins need to make some off season moves.

FYI - Punto is signed through 2010 with club having an option on him for 2011 or a buyout of $500,000.

I HATE the Yankees with a passion but am thrilled that they beat that POS team Minnesota who should've never beat the Tigers. Ironic that the blown call in the 2nd game that could've given Minn a win didn't just like the game they played against the Tigers right? Good thing you guys won at least one game in the playoffs right Twins? Now for that joke of a sports team Yankees to get swept...
