Twins exercise 2011 option on Cuddyer

  • Print

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The Minnesota Twins have picked up outfielder Michael Cuddyer’s(notes) $10.5 million option for 2011.

Cuddyer hit a career-high 32 home runs to lead the team. He also had 94 RBIs and was sixth in the American League with 73 extra-base hits.

When slugger Justin Morneau(notes) went out with a back injury in September, Cuddyer moved from right field to first base. He hit .352 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in the next 19 games as the Twins leapfrogged the Tigers and won the AL Central title.

The option is part of a contract Cuddyer signed in 2008. He will make $8.5 million in 2010 and be paid $33.5 million over the life of the four-year deal. If the Twins had declined the option, they would have owed Cuddyer a $1 million buyout.

    To all you Yankee fans,

You bought the title. Anyone with only a little knowlege could have managed that team, no disrepect to Joe (loved him as a player). With a coupe of breaks in that series the Twins would have been in the World Series. Cuddy is one of the team leaders and had quite the season so I am glad we signed him. Nick Swisher sucks and I wouldn't sign him for 1 million. Mauer will never sign with the Yankees! You can take that to the bank, I just spoke with him yesterday. Go Twins. Oh, Bobby is not a better hitter than Cuddy.

The Twins are not pathetic, Mauer will not be a Yankee, and Cuddy is the man.

    GO TWINS!

Twins are pathetic and nothing they can do will help them as long as their owner remains full of greed. Joe Mauer will be in pinstripes after next season, bank on it.

I am a Yankee fan but I love the Twins, actually I was hoping the Twins would take the series to 5 games because the deserved it. They are the only team that never quits. Anyway Cuddyer might be a great guy, but this was a bad move, the Twins need pitching more than anything, and they need to save money for 2010 (Mauer). God I hope he stays. Hardy move was great though, I think they should move him to third and Punto at short with Casilla at 2nd. The outfield is finally settled with Gomez's departure, and the Pitching staff could come back to 08 form. They are the favorites for the central as of now

    #45 - From what I know;

Based off of the 32 players listed on the teams roster on the Yahoo! MLB Team page (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/min/roster) -

20 for sure - with 16 of them coming via the draft. 4 acquired from other teams and brought up through our farm system... I'm sure there are probably a couple that I don't know of...

Why do people hate the twins so much. They play to the best of their abilities. Morneau and Mauer are the stars that put on their cleats every game and tell the rest of the team follow us.

The Twins caught the Tigers, and it might have taken up all their reserves of strength. They played okay against the Yankees, but they might have just run out of gas. They did not lay down and quit. They gave it their all.

Punto is a defensive replacement, end of story. Gardenhire's fascination with him is creepy. Wish Casilla would blossom.

#26. guido (that's not you're real name) and your avatar is a republican. you're a double loser. and you're a twins fan! triple loser!! Go home to your mommy, putz and her brother, AKA your dad. you inbread biaatch.

I'm not from NY...just a neutral observer of baseball. BTW, how did the Twins do against the Yanks? They got swept. They have no bullpen, they have no decent starters. 10.5M for a starter would be MUCH BETTER than spending it on Cuddyer. swisher made 5.5M. I'd rather have 5M to sign someone else with swisher than a Cuddyer. Remember, the angels signed Abreu last winter for 5M. Abreu is a much better hitter than Cuddyer. Twins have no money....stop overspending on mediocre players. I bet Cuddyer injures himself and the Twins are looking to unload him at the trade deadline, with no takers because he sux.

Why do Yankee fans feel the need to post on a report about the Twins? Or on any report not involving them at all?

I don't know if everyone has heard, so let me say it once more. The New York Yankees are the 2009 World Champions. 27 27 27 27 27 27 27 27 27 This is an undisputed FACT. Deal with it the best you can. We know it's hard. Especially for Twins fans whose owner has more money than God but doesn't want to part with it. Instead of posting all this nonsense, use your time wisely and write to HIM. Or, keep putting smiles on the faces of Yankee fans by reminding us how sad you are. Your choice. I'm hoping for the latter. Just saying. Peace.

Um, the Twins have not won since 1991. You know the time when they did not sell talent and did not pocket revenue sharing checks from the teams that wanted to win.

No Farm system? You mean like Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera, Posada, Cabrera, Cano, Gardner and many others? Plenty more coming pal.

Bad manager? Girardi managed the Florida Marlins for one year iin 2006, Awarded Manager of the Year in the N.L. His second year of managing was 2009 for the Yankees. He won 1003 games in the regular season, the most in MLB. Then he wins the World Series. Not bad for only 2 years managing, don't you think? Who has done better?

    Nice post, DUH.

I just laugh at the Yankees fan who think they're so great. Their farm system sucks, their management is average at best. If they couldn't outspend every other team year after year in free agency, the yankees would be nothing. The fact that they spend so much more than the majority of all the other teams and went so long without winning a WS is proof of the ineptitude of their management.

Guido said "Swisher couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag this "POSTSEASON."

Like I said, IGNORANT TWINS FANS.

This guy is pretty much the reason the Twins made the playoffs. When Justin got hurt I thought they were done. 10.5M still seems high but if he hits 30HR again it will be worth it. Especially if he Mauer and Morneau can stay in the lineup all year. Now lets get at least 1 starting pitcher and someone to play 3B that can hit over 200 and/or play more than half the season.

Something most other teams would no little about, clubhouse presence, is something Cuddyer adds to the Twins' team. Small market teams who can't afford to go out and buy whats hot like a spoiled teenager rely on guys like Cuddy to rally his team when it matters ( see Sep 2009). Great move for this team. Now if they can find 70 RBI from a 3B they are in place to do some damage with the return of Morneau and Neshek in '10.

If the yanks lost then Ron would be making excuses, it's how the typical NY fan is. If they win then they run their mouth as if they are all knowing about every team, if they lose then they were cheated. Either way they are a loser, how pathetic. The Twins did good to sign Cuddy, it's one of the things tat Mauer wanted to see happen so there is an added benefit right there.

The ignorance of these posters is awesome. I can't believe Cuddyer being referred to as a one year wonder. And 10.5 million is well within the range of players with similar stats . Please before you exercise your finders posting a comment, wake up your brains, first.
