Twins take 3B Brian Buscher off 40-man roster

  • Print

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The Minnesota Twins have moved third baseman Brian Buscher(notes) off their 40-man roster and assigned him to Triple-A Rochester.

The move was made Tuesday. Buscher will become a minor league free agent 16 days after the end of the World Series.

Over parts of three seasons, Buscher batted .266 in 436 at-bats with eight home runs and 69 RBIs while going back and forth between the Rochester club and the Twins.

With Joe Crede(notes) becoming a free agent this fall following an injury-plagued year, third base is again unsettled for the Twins.

Matt Tolbert(notes) and Brendan Harris(notes) were the primary options at that position down the stretch while Crede was hurt, and Buscher rarely played. He hit .235 in 136 at-bats this year.

Good move now release Crede and it will be a great move Their better off with Harris, Tolbert, Calbrea, or Punto if Vallencia doesn't make it. At least they can play defense, it's not like they got a lot of offense from either Crede or Busher.

Buscher would be a solid player if someone would give him a chance to play every day. At least he could go a whole week without hurting himself, unlike Crede.

Buscher will never have what it takes to be on a MLB roster for a full season. He will be a journeyman going between AAA and MLB his entire life. He's a decent option when there are injuries, but he's not even someone I would want on my bench as a regular backup.

I'd give Joe Crede a contract that is cheap, but with performance incentives. If he gets injured again, we're not in a worse position. Free Agent 3B's are weak this year, a lot of washed up Roger Dorns (Major League Movie: "I thought you said we didn't have any high priced talent" - "Who Dorn, he's just high priced")

Crede sounds like a good option for another season. However, if we're gonna take the risk and try to develop Danny Valencia right now at the major league level, we run into a few problems. He's still young and unproven. Failure at the MLB level could crush his morale, especially given the success he has had at other levels (other than Winter league 08-09 where he batted .209, no homers). He's still a AA or AAA project that still needs development.

My guess is the Twins will go into the 2010 season with a void at 3B... But I'm hoping Bill Smith can prove that he's a Terry Ryan and do more with less. On a positive note, our pitching staff should come back healthy... including having Slowey & Neshek back. I just wish we could do something about our overrated-closer!

Might be setting up for a platoon of Crede and Valencia. That's if they can get Crede in another incentive laden contract starting around 1 or 2 mill. He would be the insurance for the Valencia experiment. Yeah his back is a big risk but for a couple mill why not.

Looks like it's time for Danny Valencia to be called up to the majors!

FIRST! Buscher didn't offer much in the way of fielding or hitting so this isn't a big surprise. But knowing the way that Gardy loves under-achieving middle infielders I am surprised that the move was initiated.
