Zumaya, Tigers avoid arbitration with 1-year deal

  • Print

DETROIT (AP)—Oft-injured reliever Joel Zumaya(notes) and the Detroit Tigers avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $915,000, one-year contract on Wednesday.

The hard-throwing right-hander was 3-3 with a 4.94 ERA and one save in 29 appearances last year during a season cut short by shoulder problems. He made $735,000.

A key member of the 2006 Tigers team that reached the World Series, Zumaya has been plagued by injuries during his career. He is 11-11 with a 3.15 ERA and four saves in four seasons with Detroit. He has pitched in 140 games, compiling 176 strikeouts in 171 1-3 innings.

The Tigers have four players still eligible for arbitration: pitcher Justin Verlander(notes), catcher Gerald Laird(notes), right-hander Zach Miner(notes) and lefty Bobby Seay(notes).

Players have until Friday to file.

I agree with Jim. I doubt if Zumaya will ever produce again.

Why have the Tigers kept Lloyd McClendonnothing, the worst hitting coach in baseball, to teach all the new incoming players. Get rid of him so Tiger hitters have a fighting chance!

Glad we signed Valverde as our closer next year would have been scary and it takes the pressure off Z and may make him a better set up pitcher.

Need more consistent hitting. Surprising fact is that ESPN named Everett the shortstop of the decade. Pretty good for a guy who never plays enough or hits well enough for a Gold Glove.

Going to be a bit younger team next year and may struggle to play .500 ball but new players might surprise.

anyone know if Zumaya is closing this year for Detroit? Or is it going to be Ryan Perry, or some unknown? Thanks.

Same problem as last year, too many weak hitters in the lineup and no left handed power.

Man, everyone's down on the tigers right now. I, for one, think dombrowski is doing an excellent job...kinda like when he first came here and turned around the WORST team in baseball in just two years. Yes that was Trammells team, and leyland came in and showed what a terrible manager trammell really was. He got to the world series, so he decided to go for it all with some big name signings...that didn't work. So we went back to the drawing board last year, and had some success...but we never were really a first place caliber team. One thing was obvious last year...Granderson is unproductive at the plate. We needed a guy like granderson defensively, but who can get on base more and has speed...a leadoff hitter. That's exactly what austin jackson projects to be! We stole Scherzer and Schlereth from Arizona...and their fans are pissed. It's like we took their version of porcello. Zumya coming back for peanuts is a no-brainer. You all keep kicking dombrowski and showing me what a 7th graders analysis of the moves looks like; but if you don't want to sound like idiots you should probably stop posting. The tigers were an awful frustrating team to watch the last couple years and I am looking forward to the fresh faces of Jackson, Seizemore and Availa in the lineup; and major league arms in the bullpen. Speed, defense, strong bullpen and pitching...sounds like someone knows what they're doing.

They needed Jason Bey a power hitting left-fielder. Carlos needs to DH. With hopefully a decent Maggs and Carlos and power from Cabrea and Bey you should have enough in the Central division to compete. Plus after this year Maggs, Carlos, Nate Roberson, Dontrelle Willis, Jeremy Bonderman and I think Inge will come off the books $60 MILLION COMBINED! You would've been able to pay for Bey.

Don't go after Valverde. Keep your 3 first round picks and rebuild your infield. We're going to need a SS, 3rd, and eventually a 2nd baseman. This team is at least 2-3 years away from serious contention.

You guys are all over-reacting. The AVERAGE salary for a MLB player is well over $1M and Zumaya is a guy the fans not only look to for excitement but can be a good reliever when healthy. If he gets hurt again, he's gone next year... and last I checked, ticket prices weren't being raised so YOU are not paying for this signing.

Second... Granderson was traded because his swing isn't fixable. He may have better numbers in NY but that's a band box surrounded by the worlds best players. He wasn't going to lead this team and DD sought the best talent available in return. Throw it back in my face if this trade doesn't work in 2-3 years but for now DD wasn't going to get burned by declining or average players like he did with Robertson, Bonderman, Willis or Gallaragga.

I don't understand why everyone doesn't think this is a good move. He's costing them less than 1 million. Yeah, he could be hurt again but I think this is low risk, high reward.

Have been a Tiger fan for years, but not a fan of either Dumbroski or Leland. The team that went to the series was Tram's team. Dumbroski bought the series with Florida and tried to do the same with the Tigers, now we are paying for his lavish life style. Trading Granderson and resigning Zumaya are the acts of a desperate fool. Leyland is just too senile to be a manager. Gardenhire out thought him at every turn.

Ive been a Tigers fan since 1968 when i was 10 . That team inspired me for a lifetime. But now we live in a age of selffish free agent greed and i dont see any hope ever getting back to world series in my lifetime its a shame. They traded granderson ? He would have done ok as leadoff guy agaisnt right handers and left handers he would bat ninth in my lineup.Too bad they couldnt keep Polanco now they have a huge hopeless hole in the top 2 hitters in the lineup. I was thinking with M.Ordonez power outage he would be perfect in the #2 spot advancing baserunners . But then u would have no #3 hitter lol this team will be awful on offense this year and the pitchers will have to pitch gems everygame to struggle for a .500 winning percentage. And why not Carlos Guillen at SS the pitchers should erase a few extra mistakes he makes .Then u could put Ryan Raburn in as an everyday player cause he showed he deserved it last year. Ill never understand why Leland used minor league players either in the top 3 spots in the order. If u want runs you need professional proven players not minor leaguers. As far as Joe Zumaya goes ...he still needs to learn how to throw an off speed pitch. Takes more than pitching to win games . Even if you did get to first place the other teams can beat them with hitting or pitching. Tigers have all there chips on pitching this year . Its gonna be a huge dissapointment too.Yep what a shame there will be many lineup changes on this platooned lineup that stinks.Next year Verlander will be gone and most like Cabrera too and back to 2003 here we go. Zumaya will be a flop he will lead the league in blown saves ..he will always be a setup man or less.

If Huff is worth $3mill for his production last year then Z has got to be worth at least what he is getting. Hopefully, this will be a big year for him.

Big Tiger fan since 1953. Leyland will have his hands full trying to establish a starting rotation along with a
bull pen that doesn't have to show the same guy coming in game after game. If Zumaya can return to his
former form, even if off a little, it will give Leyland an extra weapon. Right now, the Tigers look a little weak
in every position except in a couple of solid players. Give Leyland a chance to use what Dombrowski gives
him and see what he does with it. With the loss of some all-star grade offensive players, Leyland has got to
be concerned about defense. Without a good defense, no team gets to ride in the parade.

Should have let Zumaya go he has been injured too much, had too many surgerys is too hitable. Tigers want to trim payroll but keep losers. Whats the point?

Talk about having a huge arm with the ability to throw with plenty of velocity, I think raise is peanuts, he will gain an additional 180k, whatever he gives you only cost you 180k more than what he was already making.... it's worth rolling the dice.

let him go and move on. I like him but he will never be the pitcher that he was. Not a good move for Detroit.

Roll of the dice situation. If he comes back strong then its a good deal and if he has a season like last year it is a bust. Seems like alot of money to me but in the world of MLB maybe not.

Big Tiger fan (since 1968) here, but not a fan of Zumaya.....wasted money on a lame arm. Take the money and run because he won't help Detroit.
