Tigers: OF Thames, C Treanor to become free agents

  • Print

DETROIT (AP)—The Detroit Tigers have removed outfielder Marcus Thames(notes) and catcher Matt Treanor(notes) from the roster, clearing the way for both players to become free agents.

Thames, a Tiger since 2004, hit .252 last season with 13 homers and 36 RBIs in 87 games. Treanor played in four games before undergoing surgery on his right hip April 30.

The Tigers also said Friday that infielder Michael Hollimon’s(notes) contract has been outrighted to Triple-A Toledo. The club purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Jay Sborz from the Mud Hens and reinstated right-hander Joel Zumaya(notes) and infielder Jeff Larish(notes) from the 60-day disabled list.

I think our Tigers are still 2 to 3 players away for a Team to go back to the World Series but nothing like any thing we had in 1984 that was quite the year

I was just trying to bash mr freezerburn for not knowing his poo poo maker from butter milk!

Bonderman is a great pitcher! Im sorry he got hurt freezerburn, but thank god YOU arent the GM, you would deal bondo to the friggin white sox so he could beat us 5 times this year!

You just stay where you are and leave all the baseball thinking to those of us who actually know something about it!

    Go Tigers!

(Wish we had Jair Jurjens back..... BAD GM for trading him away for .... Edgar Renteria???? What were you THINKING!)

Still, Verlander, Jackson, Porcello, Bondo.... I'll go to battle with those guys any day! We just need to shore up our hitting!

I love how Laird handled the staff last year, but we REALLY could stand more punch from the offensive side of the catching position. Mags is going to bounce back in a big way to form a great one-two punch with Miguel.... what we really need to worry about is replacing PAULLY!

freezerburn, the first thing out of your mouth (drop Bonderman) told me, and everyone else that read what you wrote, just how baseball savvy you are! LOL

You don't trade away or cut potential number one starters, especially when they will probably be slotted number 4 in the rotation behind Justin Jackson and Porcello. How soon they forget about workhorses giving 200+ innings year after year after year.

I'll tell you what: Actually WATCH some Tiger games this year, read up on how the game is played, just, over all... try to get SOME kind of intelligence with regards to major league baseball, AND the Detroit Tigers.... THEN come back here and try to say something intelligent. I am afraid you sorely missed the mark this time!

    Verlander (Maddux)
    Jackson (Glavin)
    Porcello (Smoltz)
    Bonderman (Avery)

I like the sound of That!

I would like it even better if Jair Jurjens was in the middle of that group :(.... friggin Edgar Renteria.... DOUGH!

Rodney is a solid pitcher but isn't it frightening that he had his career year at 32, which also happens to be his free agent yr? Tigers aren't going to give him a big contract and he's going to walk. Polanco is going to walk too or else Detroit woulda offered him an extension already. Are we going to take a chance on a kid (Scott Sizemore) to be the everyday 2B?? Or are we going to grab a free agent 2B (ie Orlando Judson) to bridge the gap?? Lots of questions to be answered in the next few months. I just wish the Tiger had dealt Thames to get maybe a bullpen arm.....seems like he was the topic of trade rumors for the past 2 or 3 yrs and then we never trade him?

I don't understand why so many people are bashing rodney. The guy had an amazing season. To compare him to robertson is a joke.

If Tigers pick up a couple of bats and a left handed pitcher, they can still be a contender. White Sox are only team in central making any moves, so far.

For a team to win, they need: (a) players with a winning attitude, (b) enough high quality players to carry the team, and (c) management that is sharp enough to accomplish (a) and (b) above within the constraints of their budget.
The Tigers have not had a winning mentatlity since the early days of Sparky, and when you look at the current motley crew of players, the only difference makers I see are Verlander and Cabrera, with a possible going to Granderson. That's it. And the management? Leyland and Dombroski are hugely overrated...they had one season where the team overachieved and they have been living off of that ever since. It was a quirk. Leyland's decision making last year was embarrasing, and going with guys like Inge, Everett and Raburn as starters and Rodney even being on the roster is a joke.
Clean house now. The Tigers are going nowhere the way things are now....I truly feel there is absolutely no hope at the present time. Might as well clean house and go in a direction that might offer some hope down the road.

The Tigers need to do whatever they need to do to go get Roy Holiday from Toronto. Then and only after that they need to go find some strong hitters. We need 3 really good starters in pitching. We need the third starter and that would be Roy. We also need Joel to come back next year and be one of power house closers to help Fernando Rodney.

MLB is all about PITCHING! PITCHING! PITCHNG!

Comments noted on a par with Dumbo & Leyland: in other words they all suck. Cabrera has a nice smile and finally is decent first baseman but is simply not a winner. Trade him while he still has value. Keep Polanco with Sizemore to back up second & third base. Keep Don Kelly as LH BP. Need LH bat at 1B & DH.

Sorry to see Thames go but his best job is DH somewhere else. Zurmaya he better have a good year or he will be gone by JULY. I like Larish but where do you put him.Tiger's need a 3b & ss who can hit all so need pitching. The starting 3 can or maybe the BEST in baseball. Go get Crawford to bat leadoff & go for Dye who has been a Tiger's killer for many years. Dye would need about 6 to 8 mil & I know Dye can play better then the 18 million that the Tiger's are paying for a right fielder. The Tiger's need too start making moves now but do not over pay just to get a player with a big name. Tiger's need to let the players making big money now go. Too many players are over paid so cut them if you can. Go Tiger's & see you next year.
