Police look into fight involving Tigers 1B Cabrera

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (AP)—Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera(notes) was drunk—three times above Michigan’s legal limit for driving, according to police—between two key games over the weekend as his team was trying to win the American League Central title.

The 26-year-old Venezuelan first baseman was taken to a police station Saturday after arriving at his suburban Detroit home at 5 a.m. and getting into a fight with his wife, Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson said.

Cabrera went 0-for-4 and stranded six runners in a 5-1 loss to Chicago on Saturday night, a game that started about 12 hours after Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski picked him up at the station.

On Friday night, Cabrera had gone 0-for-4 and left four runners on base in an 8-0 loss to the White Sox. Cabrera went hitless in three at-bats on Sunday, a 5-3 Tigers win.

Detroit finished the regular season tied with the Twins for first place in the American League Central. The teams will play Tuesday in Minnesota, with the winner advancing to the playoffs.

Dombrowski had no comment when contacted Monday by The Associated Press.

“I have had a conversation with Miguel,” the Detroit GM wrote in an e-mail over the weekend. “It is a personal situation, and I am not at liberty to discuss it further.”

Cabrera, who hit .323 with 33 home runs and 101 RBIs this year, is in the second season of an eight-year, $152.3 million contract.

“There was an incident that took place on Saturday, and it is a personal matter,” Cabrera said in a written statement released Monday by the Tigers. “I am sorry this has become a distraction, and I apologize to the Tigers, my teammates, and all of the fans. I would appreciate it if you would respect my family’s privacy as I prepare for our next game.”

No charges will be filed, and both Cabreras refused medical attention, Patterson said.

“We determined that they both contributed to the domestic assault,” the chief said. “It was minor in nature. They did have some marks on their faces. We could not determine who the aggressor was.”

Patterson said Rosangel Cabrera called 911 at 6 a.m. Saturday, requesting police assistance.

According to a police report, Miguel Cabrera “suffered an injury to the left side of his face” and his wife “suffered an injury to her lower lip.” Miguel Cabrera’s gold neck chain was broken and a cell phone was damaged.

His wife “was upset when Miguel came home intoxicated, woke up their child and was talking on the phone,” the report says.

Rosangel Cabrera asked that her husband leave the house, so officers took him to the police station, Patterson said. Cabrera was administered a breath test by police and registered a 0.26 blood-alcohol reading, the chief said. The legal limit for Michigan drivers is 0.08.

“Mr. Cabrera was very uncooperative and highly intoxicated,” the police report says.

Cabrera, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, was picked up at the station by Dombrowski around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Patterson said officers also investigated an incident involving Cabrera earlier this year at the Townsend Hotel, which is a common destination for visiting professional sports teams.

That time, Patterson said, Cabrera got into an argument with a young man, telling him he was “overweight and needed to work out.”

Another person at the bar took offense to Cabrera’s comments and called police, who investigated. No charges were filed.

“It was a nothing incident,” Patterson said.

AP Sports Writer Larry Lage contributed to this report.

Not only is Cabrera outhitting everyone else on the team, he can blow on a breathalyzer higher than 6 out of 9 guys in the lineups averages.

Hey "The Gig" please show me in this article where it states that he was driving drunk. It would be nice if people actually read what was in the article and not what they want to read to prove a point.

According to a chart we have at work, if he had a .26 BAC @ 6AM then he would have still been at .06 @7PM. Just under the legal limit. I would guess that would be impaired enough to have an affect on hitting a major league pitcher. He screwed his team!

Well put J-Money...one issue with your post. If Cabrera gave more than 2 *hits, he wouldn't been out til 5 am drinking when when his team is in the middle of a playoff race and he has to play again the following night.

to all of the people who are @#$%ing about him driving drunk... where does it state that he had driven home? maybe he took a cab? maybe he had a DD. For you all to assume that he drove is insane. And maybe she busted her lip trying to yank his cell out of his hand as she ripped his chain off of his neck. Most states have laws that protect people who suffer through domestic abuse( this allows/makes the police to chage the guilty party no matter the wishes of the abused).

a few issues with this whole saga......
    1. most of you posting bashes have went to work hung over before yet probably didn't apologize to your co-workers for being a worthless pile of dung

2.Cabby has obviously been doing this for years, yet nobody gave a damn, INCLUDING HIS TEAM MATES or even knew before his wife called. That is probably because he has continually hit .330/30+ HR's/ 110+ Rbis'

    3. His wife called the police and neither of them are "arrested". Arrested is in quote beacsue I actually mean charged with a crime. That is probably beacsue she was the agressor and they did not want to take her away. All that was said is that not enough evidence was available to charge anybody with a crime. YOU ALL KNOW ANY OF US IN THIS POSIOTION EITHER YOU OR YOUR WIFE IS GOING TO BE CHARGED.

    4. If he is not charged with a crime from any of this why give the man a breath test? Because they are just curious for shi*s and grins? Because the PD can do whatever they want , and what they wanted was to let everbody know how much this man can drink. While they were at it, they should have told everbody how much money he carries in his wallet because he is rich and we are curious. They coulds have also took his mug shot so we coulds get a laugh at his drunken stuper like we did with Gary Busey....EVEN THOUGH HE WAS NOT ARRESTED.

go TIGERS and the Police will continue to serve, protect, embarrase, and bend rules as they see fit

It's good to see Miguel Cabrera coming out of his shell. Let's not blame the alcohol for his recent hitting slump. He's been drinking and doing whatever for the entire season, so obviously the dude can hit plastered and high.

Cabrera should slap that bee-yatch wife of his around some more. That's how some women like it. Nice and rough. So what if he's a drunk SOB? He's a great hitter. That's all that matters. That and p***y.

I bet he goes 3 for 4 and gets the winning RBI tonight. Anyone want to bet against it. He was wrong to b out drinking all night at this crucial time of the season though. The older Latin players on the team will set him straight!! And Leyland too!

I doubt highly that he was playing drunk! He had a drink (or 6) after the game. How many do any of you have after work? I know I do.

This is the way a story headline is written to get you to read it. It sounds like he was drinking in between games. So the way that they write it you could not drink from March to October because it would be "between games".

He is wrong but it is not like the head line portrays it!

As for the game tonight between the Tgers and Twins, in a way I hope the Tgers can win but....
The Tigers have not had good luck with those Twins in the past. If the Tgers win this game I don't
think they can't win agains the Yankees, while the Twins could give the Yankees a run for their
money. May the best team win.

Wow, i'm amazed that theres more uproar over the fact that this guy went 0-4 than there is about him busting his wife's lip. I mean, the guy is 6'4" 240 and he's takin shots at his wife. If the Tigers let him play then, as far as i'm concerned, they support domestic violence.

Dombrowski is a moron. Cabrera was a drunk in Florida and it was common knowledge. For the GM to say it's personal belies the fact that driving drunk is not a personal problem, it's a very public one and the team ought to be thankful someone didn't get killed. This is so typical of what star talent gets away with because scumbags, like Dombrowski, will do anything to keep their job, but don't think it has anything to do with what is right or best for the team.
