Tigers’ Cabrera declines comment about cut on face

  • Print

DETROIT (AP)—Miguel Cabrera(notes) just wanted to concentrate on the final scheduled game of the season. A bruise and cut on his left cheek made that difficult.

“I’m focused on one thing—the game,” Cabrera said when asked about the facial injuries Sunday morning.

Cabrera then went 0 for 3 in Detroit’s 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Minnesota Twins later beat Kansas City, forcing an AL Central tiebreaker on Tuesday.

Between playing Friday and Saturday nights against Chicago, Cabrera’s face took the brunt of something.

“I have had a conversation with Miguel,” Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski wrote in an e-mail. “It is a personal situation and I am not at liberty to discuss it further.”

Tigers manager Jim Leyland didn’t want to talk about it and refused to acknowledge the situation was unfortunate.

“Do you want to talk about today’s game?” Leyland asked tersely. “I manage the team on the field. That’s my job—to get this team ready to play today.

“If you want to talk about the game, we’ll talk about the game. If you don’t want to, you can excuse yourself.”

The Tigers had a seven-game lead less than a month ago and have been in first place since May 10.

Cabrera ranks among AL leaders in several offensive categories, but was 5 for 26 during the final homestand. He was hitless in four-at bats—with a total of six runners on base each—in Saturday’s loss 5-1 loss to Chicago that dropped the Tigers into a tie.

Cabrera is in the second season of an eight-year, $152.3 million contract he signed after Detroit acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Florida Marlins during the 2007 winter meetings.

They wouldn,t have to go to Minnesota if Sparky Leland had played Polanco last Thursday. How do you keep one of your best hitters out of a game that would send you to the playoffs. He'll have all winter to rest.

the article was about his face and the fact that it was all the media could worry about. if they win or lose, it is all that counts. seems like half are worried about fantasy leagues which tells me where you live. and # 2 and # 11, i got something for you.

The only people who actually like the twins are the home town fans they got if they get in and go far it will be the lowest watched games ever. If they actually had fans how come they were almost contracted no one cares about the twins

aubrey huff, i loved this guy like 5 years ago when he was hitting 300+ for tampa bay. but since his debut with the tigers..... he has really stunk it up! i have granderson, cabrera, verlander, jackson. on fantasy teams... granderson is a disappointment this year to me, he had more potential and really stunk it up in september! cabrera is a solid player same as verlander. jackson was cy young quality till the all star break and something happened? ill avoid him in future drafts. I am an A's fan. but also like Detroit and St.Louis. I hope the tigers win there next 1 or 2 games to get in, i hate the F***king Twins.

I watched the game on MLB.TV. He wasn't laying on the ground, he wasn't crying, he was going to round second on his way to third on Granderson's hit to right field. He slowed up and then grabbed the back of his leg at 2nd. He's perfectly fine, guarenteed he will be in the lineup tomorrow. Probably just dehydrated or needs to stretch before the game more. Eat some bananas. And post #2, he's not fat. Cabrera is on HGH like everyone else (look at his playing weight rookie year in Florida compared to now).

All Miguel has to do is lose 50 pounds so that he can actually drag his fat ass from first to second without pulling a hammy! He needs to be kept away from the buffet line in the clubhouse. Miguel will eat his way out of the league in the next 5 years.

We're in deep trouble without Miguel, particularly now that the warts of the bullpen are being more readily exposed. Robertson and Lyon are both horrific, and Miner and Seay are only slightly better. We better hope that guys like Verlander, Jackson, and Bonderman (when he starts throwing again next week) can go deep into games, or we're going to fall out of contention by August. Zumaya and Rodney can only do so much, and Cabrera has been a MONSTER at the plate this year. GO TIGERS!
