Royals trade Teahen to White Sox for Getz, Fields

  • Print

CHICAGO (AP)—Mark Teahen(notes) has a new team and a new city. Happily for him, he’s got his old position back.

The Kansas City Royals sent Teahen to the White Sox on Friday and Chicago will find a home for him at third base.

“That’s really my comfort position,” Teahen said. “It’s huge. The past three years I haven’t known where I’m going to play and the past 24 hours I haven’t know what city I’m going to play in.”

The Royals got Chris Getz(notes) and Josh Fields(notes) from the White Sox in exchange.

Teahen was established at third base in Kansas City, but three years ago the Royals called up Alex Gordon(notes), who’d been the No. 2 overall draft pick two years earlier.

Thus began a trip around the diamond for Teahen and he never really settled in at any position.

Teahen batted .271 with a 12 home runs and 50 RBIs in 144 games with the Royals in 2009, battling a sore back in the final month of the season. He made 99 starts at third base, 31 in right field and three at second base.

Chicago general manager Ken Williams said Teahen would be the White Sox’s starting third baseman and last year’s rookie star, Gordon Beckham(notes), would be switched from third to second. Williams said Beckham, who was a star shortstop at the University of Georgia before being a first-round pick in 2008, was OK with the change.

Teahen said he can handle the outfield but prefers to play the position where he broke in with the Royals in 2005.

“It is tough when you are coming to the ball park every day just kind of checking the lineup card and seeing where you’re playing and figuring out where you are hitting in the lineup,” Teahen said.

“I’ve always produced better when I’ve just been left alone,” he said. “And playing third base I’ve been most productive there. My hope is settling back in there I can put up some bigger offensive numbers and not have to worry about as much stuff.”

Teahen is a career .269 hitter with 59 home runs and 293 RBIs in 676 career games, all with Kansas City. The White Sox also got cash considerations in the deal.

“He’s a delight to be around day in and day out. We’re going to miss him,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “But at the end of the day we believe this was a good baseball trade for both organizations. We’re happy to be able to make the deal.”

Teahen could make as much as $5 million through arbitration. Was that a consideration?

“Obviously, we’re in a time in baseball where the economics are very, very important. I would not discount that as a part of the equation,” Moore said.

Kansas City also declined options for outfielder Coco Crisp(notes) ($8 million), catcher Miguel Olivo(notes) ($3.3 million) and right-hander Yasuhiko Yabuta(notes) ($4 million). Crisp and Olivo became eligible for free agency.

Crisp and Yabuta each get $500,000 buyouts and Olivo receives $100,000.

Getz became Chicago’s starting second basemen last season, batting .261 with two homers, 31 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 107 games. He impressed manager Ozzie Guillen with his gritty play.

Fields, a former college quarterback at Oklahoma State, appeared in 29 games and batted .222 with seven homers and 30 RBIs last season. Fields show immense promise as a rookie in 2007 when he filled in for injured Joe Crede(notes) and hit 23 homers in 100 games.

But his career with the White Sox never took off after that. And after Beckham was called up, it was clear he had no future with the team.

The trade was announced shortly after the White Sox said they had declined a 2010 option on right fielder Jermaine Dye(notes).

Williams said he talked with Dye on Friday and there was no way at this time to fit him in. The White Sox gave the veteran a $950,000 buyout instead of $12 million in salary next season.

But Williams did not rule out the possibility of Dye returning, saying it would be a long offseason. He said the White Sox were still in the market for another outfielder and that it likely will not be Scott Podsednik(notes), who rejoined the White Sox last season and gave them a lift from the leadoff spot.

“Money is tight all over the world and certainly on the South Side,” Williams said. “We’re going to spend whatever we have available, but it’s not much.”

The left-handed hitting Teahen is a player the White Sox have watched for a while and even inquired about his availability last season, Williams said.

Teahen had a career-high 34 doubles last season and the White Sox figure that in homer-friendly U.S. Cellular Field some of those will clear the fence.

Hey, I'm pissed off with Kenny Williams. This really sucks. Good riddance to Fields. He'll probably break out with the Royals, but he didn't fit with the Sox. Getz did and was just what Williams has said he wanted for the Sox. Speed and youth. I'm on the fence with the Dye thing, but I think we can kiss the division good bye for next year.

Don't know about this one Kenny Give a up a good, young, potential 2B (Getz) to get what appears to be an average, older 3B, who also costs more? Someone said Teahen was a doubles machine - so was Getz (led all rookies)! Hopefully, this is like the Contreras deal, where the guy just needs a change of scenery to break out.

Getting rid of Josh "swing and a miss" Fields is a definate plus, but is Kenny trying to tell us something about the development of Viciedo? Perhaps they will switch him to 1B to take over for Paulie in a couple years?

Mark Teahen has done everything that an organization could ask for a player. He is multitalented and plays the game the way it should. He is a model citizen, a good teammate, and friendly. I will miss him in KC. The Royals are unloading payroll its very clear. Crisp, (8 million) Olivo, (3million), Teahen, (5 million) Yabuta (4 million). I am hoping for a a decent crop of free agents to come here. I dont see any gains with the trade. Getz joins Callaspo a .300 hitter, Bloomquist at second, Fields may be under rated with upside. He can be Alex Gordon's insurance policy. In hope the royals can spend the rest of the 20 million wisely.

Have been a Getz fan every since he was in the minors. Sure hate to see him go. Teahen is ok, but I think Kenny gave up too much and did not get enough in return. I had heard Fields had asked to be traded like Anderson was. Still think Fields is " a diamond in the rough", but the Sox gave him every opportunity to make the grade and he didn't. Sure hope they resign Pods if they don't sign a leadoff hitter and that Becham can handle second base. Believe that Beckham can. Go SOX.

TEAHEN will be very good for the White Sox.
I hate losing Getz but Teahen is a better hitter and way better at third.
You will get the same out of Teahen you got out of Beckham and a better third basemen.
I really think he will produce better than Beckham did this year.
So you are really replacing Getz with Beckham.
    Think about it????????

You call yourselves Sox fans and yet go on speaking poorly of Alexei Ramirez's defense? Anyone who's followed the team knows that he is a spectacular defender. The numbers don't tell the whole story; most of Ramirez's errors were throwing errors when he got lazy on routine plays. He did a pretty good job of fixing that when Ozzie got on his case in the second half, and he's got the potential to win a Gold Glove in the not-too-distant future. I still hate this trade for losing Getz, but Teahen is a doubles machine. Kenny could come out looking like a genius once again. HOWEVER, if Getz and Podsednik are both leaving, where's all the speed coming from? In Rios, Ramirez, Beckham, even Quentin and Teahen, the Sox have guys who can get around the bases pretty well, but all five of them have little to no stolen base capability. I think trading Getz for Teahen is going in the opposite direction of what Kenny keeps saying he wants to do: infuse the club with youth, speed, and different ways to score.

Fields sucked, both in defense, and offense--glad he is gone, and what's with Rios, heard since he came to Chicago, he is 100% nightlife, not good for whitesox, there was only 1 babe, and 1 mickey, which Rios is far from either, beckham is 100% talent, feel whatever spot he was put in would work out, thought Getz was a go getter ? Tehan ?? if he hustles, defense, offense, he might make it here in Chicago, dye was over the hill, not sure about scotty.p seemed looked the spark plug for the sox last year, peavy was an excellent p/u, thornton should be closer, but who is middle relief ? linebrink, @#$%, dotel, @#$%, also loved thome while he was here, but another over the hill hall of famer, what about holiday available ?----good luck, not this year.

I've met Teahen a few times. Nice guy, very quiet. As he says, he likes to be left alone; not to be bothered. He's "average" from top to bottom and adds to the clubhouse only by not being a distraction. Seems pretty melicholic... No passion for much of anything. My guess is if he's batting above the 8 spot, your lineup is lame.

It could prove to be a good move for Chicago and his track record shows decent production and batting average when stationed at 3rd and he's also entering his prime.

Royals might possibly got the best of this trade. Getz is unproven in every category except defense and speed. Not a bad combination for a middle infielder though. Josh Fields, while he hit 23 homers in 100 games, strikes out alot! (Jose' Guillen and Mike Jacobs don't need another whiffer!)
The aspect that concerns me is that while the Royals are trying to build, they brought in ANOTHER 3rd baseman. Well, at least they got rid of one in Teahen! Was NEVER a big fan of either him or Buck. While he may be a nice guy and a positive presence in the clubhouse, how many games has either him or Buck won for the Royals? Seven, Eight?
Where is Alex Gordon???? When is he going to step up?
Bright prospect, lackluster performer! Is this the end of the line for Gordon?
If I were Dayton Moore, I would give Alex until 2010 to perform and then trade or release.
You build an organization around cornerstones. Billy Butler and Zack Greinke emerged this year as building blocks. Soria is there already.
Teahen is gone and I'm happy! Next on the Royals train out of town should be, in this order, Jose' Guillen, Mike Jacobs, who is absolutely the WORST power hitter I've ever seen. He is an unbalanced hitter, (probably because he has 5 lbs. of chaw in his mouth) and is heavy on the left side. I've NEVER seen such a poor hitter. Why is this guy in MLB? And John Buck!
Poor Catcher, lousy hitter and can't throw a freakin' runner out at 2B. Hits some HR's but so what!
Coco gone! Good! Olivo gone! Mixed feelings. Who is the catcher? Do we have a prospect there?
Middle relief not bad although I miss Mayhay.
So many holes to fill although we do have some bright people in place with Butler, Soria and Greinke.
Get rid of the ACE and make Greinke the ACE!
I hope Dayton makes some good decisions this Winter. Josh Fields could be good, cutdown on the K's. Getz could be there but Royals don't have time to wait for him. Perform now!
Thanks for reading my novel and if you want to buy or sell real estate in Topeka, KS., please call JC at 785-250-1411.
Or make me an offer for an advanced scout for the Royals. Hahahahahahah!

i am a cubs fan but follow sox. cant believe we've seen williams "endgame" yet... Teahan is likely a nice pick-up, should see better pitches on sox as better protected in lineup. with luck, avg, rbis & obp goes up. that said, Getz, fields, dye are gone (likely dye) and Scotty Pods on way out, it appears. Peavy & Rios were nice pcs, (tho Rios struggled)- i can't picture the entire position players yet... oops! forgot Jim T gone too!

I am in agreement that letting Getz go to the Royals for Teahan was not in the best interests of the White Sox. If Getz stays healthy, he has "all star" potential and reminded me of Nellie Fox in his approach to the game. It seems that Kenny Williams likes to get overpaid "has beens" while mortgaging the future with the expectation of instant success. I would rather have seen Alexi Ramirez (the 2008 flash in the pan who never seems to have his head in the right place at the right time) been the one who was traded. Beckham is a natural shortstop and Ramirez at best is a mediocre second basemen, who has yet to learn how to hit a breaking pitch. The White Sox need to improve their pitching staff especially relievers if they truly expect to be in the play offs. Oh well, I guess it's only baseball, and not curing cancer, and I am not going to lose any sleep over this.

I'm a Cubs fan, and I thought it was a stupid trade for the White Sox. Gordon Beckham showed he could play third and Chris Getz fit just fine with the Sox. Now, if it was Jayson Nix and Josh Fields for Mark Teahen, then that trade would be more welcomed. If I was a Sox fan, I'd be pissed off with Kenny Williams right now

I have to agree with pretty much everyone here, Getz is the real loss here. Fields was pretty much done in Chicago, and putting GB at his 3rd position in less than 2 years has the real potential to screw him up. Teahen better show up.

Teahan is a better right fielder than third basemen, he has a cannon for an arm in right and long strides to track down balls on the line. He didn't appear to have the quickness at the hot corner to play everyday. He is an average hitter, but has a pretty low OBP. Getz has got to be the jewel of this trade. He hit respectably well in his short rookie season, has great speed and plays pretty good defense. Should make a nice improvement over Callaspo who hits well, but is a defensive liability and has little speed. Fields is a throw in project at best. This should free up the Royals to trade Callaspo for a serviceable DH with some pop. I can't wait to see Getz in Royal blue next year.

I Agree With #9 Robert C And #10 Carlo. Kenny Made A Bad Deal! We Get A Very Mediocre Hitter In Teahan Who Probably Isn't Going To Get Any Better While Making A Couple Of Million Bucks While We Give Up Two Young Guys Who Make The Minimum And One (Getz) Who Has A Chance To Be A Real
Lead Off Hitter. This One Has A Chance To Be A Real Bad One!

Ok royals fans especially #21 that says Feilds will turn into a good power hitter, good luck, he is terrible and half the time he swings it just looks like he has no control or even idea of what he's swinging at. I'd be more excited for Getz if I was a royals fan, he's going to be a solid player for the next 7 or 8 years. Very quick on the bases and plays decent defense, also could be a solid #2 hitter in the future. As a white sox fan I hate this move, even though I consider it Getz for Tehan (because feilds is a bum) I think it doesn't fit at all what the white sox need... it's basically just an older version of Getz that costs more.

Teahen was drafted by Oakland in 2002 and traded to the Royals in 2004, along with right-handed pitcher Mike Wood(notes), in exchange for right-hander Octavio Dotel(notes) and cash considerations.

    This is wrong!

Oakland traded him to Kansas City in 2004, along with Mike Wood, as part of a three-way trade that sent Carlos Beltran to the Houston Astros, Octavio Dotel from the Astros to the Athletics, and John Buck from the Astros to the Royals.

Teahan sucks. He plays with ZERO passion. Just collecting a paycheck. Rarely hustles. Should be stealing 30-40 bases a year.
