Red Sox sign reliever Nelson to minor leagues

  • Print

BOSTON (AP)—The Red Sox have signed journeyman reliever Joe Nelson(notes) and minor league catcher Gustavo Molina(notes) to minor league deals that include spring training invitations.

The 35-year-old Nelson has played for five pro teams, including Boston in 2004 when he allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings. Last season, Nelson went 3-0 with a 4.02 ERA for the Tampa Bay Rays before ending the year in the minors.

Nelson has a career 4.07 ERA with 13 saves and 145 strikeouts in 143.2 innings.

The 27-year-old Molina spent last season with the Washington Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate, hitting .209 with 24 RBI in 72 games.

I think the major difference is that most red sox fans are baseball fans and most yankee fans just follow the yankees because the team is popular or because they are native new yorkers. I'm sure there are a few die-hards in the mix, but I have only had one logical baseball conversation with a yankee fan since grade school - and he was from jersey. I don't hate the yankees, but when fans disrespect the game it's an insult to all of us.
    GO SOX!

It says a lot about the insecurities of the Yankees fans that they have to show up here trash talking. Either that, or they are kids who do not know better.

The Yankees have won championships, so have the Red Sox. Then, fans of whichever team that has won championships - act like it!

    I prefer Leno to O'Brien
I prefer Tea Party Brigades to the condescending cognoscenti which leaves destruction, and slime, whilst they slither back under the rock they came from.
That is where I am coming from, because at least where I am in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, I am fans of teams that have won championships. Local teams like the Oilers and Eskimos, and teams further away like the BoSox and Patriots (heck, even the Dolphins under Don Shula, when Griese was the QB, and he could hand the pigskin off to Csonka or Mercury Morris).

I think signing Andy Petite was a great move for the Yankees, does he get a Rascal scooter in the deal??

How about giving up the red sox suck-the yankees suck. Both are great teams and nothing sucks about them. Let's cheer FOR our favorite team and leave the name calling to the kindergardeners.

Okay here its Im sick of hearing these Yankee fans on how they won 27 championships how they are the best team and all but lets see it took them 10 yrs to win a championship with the type of line up that they have is to be dominating the league but they cant cause they choke in 2001 when they lost to a bunch of kids and then the major choke in 2004 when they had the red soxs down and out and they could not finish then off major choke yes baby ...red sox are coming back cause they can talk all the trash they want about the sox but they are one team that none like to face in playoffs......

A true fan will stand behind their team whether they make a good move or a bad move. If you are tru to that team then you will be behind them no matter what they choose to do. It doesn't matter if the Red Sox were lucky or not at least they made it to the playoffs. If you don't make the playoff's then you have no chance to win it all. So either be behind the RED SOX and support them or just keep @#$%ing. They are the best and will always be the best whether they win or loose, so deal with it. I am a true fan of the RED SOX and will always support them.

yo who ever says the red sox are lucky that they made the playoffs last year are just wrong. okay because last year when the red sox owned the yankees in the beginning of the year and kept sweeping them, everyone said how oh no one can defeat the red sox now, there going to win it all. but now everyone says they were lucky bec they got crushed by the angels, thats just bull. but i will admit that the yankees did turn there season around and did crush the sox during the summer. but dont say the sox were lucky.

every team has the exact same opportunity to sign any player, so if a team decides to spend more than the other then who is to blame? when the yankees were saddled with a huge payroll & didnt have anything to show for it, all the talk was that money cant buy a championship, but when all the pieces finally complimented each other then they cries changed to "oh the yankees bought another series ring!" well, make up your minds, its either money cant or can buy championships & if money can the continue to do so yankees!!! it was money well spent!

The Red Sox were lucky to get the Wild Card last season. Then the Angels EMBARRASSED them in the divisional series! From what I've seen so far, they will be lucky to be in the hunt for the Wild Card come September.

Two more senseless signings. Other than the signing of John Lackey, I have been far from impressed with ANYTHING Theo's done this off season. He lost Jason Bay to the Mets for a little more than what he offered Bay and then replaces him with Mike "strikeout" Cameron. He allowed Alex Gonzalez to walk AGAIN and replaced him with Scutaro. He brought in Beltre to play third AFTER the trade of Mike Lowell to Texas fell through due to Lowell failing his physical. While the defense may or may not be better than 2009, the offense will be WORSE! This is a team that had problems scoring runs in critical situations last year, and this year looks like things will be even worse.

I rather see them scratch their ass's then make stupid moves for the sake of making a move.......How ridiculous.
Maybe this could be the reason for the not so stella ticket sales start this year.
