Marlins trade Hermida to Red Sox

  • Print

MIAMI (AP)—The Florida Marlins are big on players who outperform their contract, which is why outfielder Jeremy Hermida(notes) is bound for Boston.

The Red Sox acquired the former first-round draft choice Thursday for left-handers Hunter Jones(notes) and Jose Alvarez.

Hermida was the 11th overall pick in 2002 but has yet to fulfill his projected potential. He was among Florida’s best-paid players this year at $2.25 million but hit only .259 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs in 129 games.

“When you acquire a player, sometimes you acquire them because you think there’s a chance that with a change of scenery they’ll reach their potential,” Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. “Things never really came together for him in the big leagues. That’s not uncommon for young players. He’s about to turn 26, coming into his prime. …

“It may not happen; it may not happen with us,” Epstein added. “Certainly we liked him a lot as an amateur and throughout his minor league career, so from those factors it was a reasonable deal.”

A starter since 2006 for Florida, Hermida is a career .265 hitter with 57 homers.

“He had a lot of opportunity here,” general manager Larry Beinfest said. “Given his talent level, I think the expectation was for more. Hopefully he’ll realize it elsewhere.”

The trade was the sort the Marlins often make, paring payroll while adding pitching.

Jones is expected to compete for a bullpen spot in spring training. He had a 9.24 ERA in 11 relief appearances for the Red Sox. A Florida native who pitched for Florida State, he went 4-3 with a 4.25 ERA in 36 games for Triple-A Pawtucket in 2009.

Alvarez went 9-4 in Class A this year with a 2.26 ERA in 12 starts and 14 relief appearances. The 20-year-old Venezuelan had 16 walks and 74 strikeouts in 107.2 innings

“Really good numbers,” Beinfest said. “He’s a strike thrower and he’s a winner, and we like that.”

Alvarez has a 3.21 ERA in four minor league seasons.

Also, Florida declined its $2.6 million option on first baseman-outfielder Ross Gload(notes), who then filed for free agency along with right-hander Brendan Donnelly(notes). Gload hit .261 with six homers and 30 RBIs in 230 at-bats this year after he was acquired from Kansas City.

Hey guys, you' re barking at the wrong tree, why dont we direct our frustrations to John Henry and his so called management gurus. Baseball is business, where do all the money Boston is earning go after filling up all the stadiums they play? Is it the Yankees fault if Boston management fails in its so called low risk high reward projects?. Remember what Texeira said , he likes how the Yankees manages things ..

Yankees can enjoy their last 2009 championship because the next one will be in a long time like 10 years from now. The Red Sox will sign Bay, Mauer, and Gonzales. The Red Sox have a dynasty in the making with lots of talent in Triple AAA- Pawtucket farm system something the Stinking Yankees don't have and never will. As a reminder your Yankee infield is getting older -ss Jeter 3b A-Rod OF Matsui and Damon (White Sox bound) and Swisher is the biggest joke and Petitie/Riveria getting alitte age on them to.

Yes the Yankees bought a title...so who wouldn't win a WS with that payroll? Well ask Dan synder of the Redskins who thinks he can buy a Superbowl. Don't get me wrong, being a red sox fan I do HATE,HATE HATE the @#$%ees, but the big money players came through for them and they stayed healthy majority of the season, so lets give credit where credit is due. I LOVE,LOVE,LOVE the Red Sox, but they also have a big payroll. I would like to see some system implemented whereby the monies is distributed EQUALLY amongst all the teams, so cities like Pitssburgh don't witness perpetual stink year after year. Only then, will we see the true team performance and coaching expertise show up. Baseball needs to level the playing field because when you see the Yankees and compare them to the small market teams it just this fact: THE RICH GET RICHER AND THE POOR STAY DOWN! Lets rid this @#$% from America's pasttime sport please.

So enjoy the off season,go out and overspend on more free agents and we will see you in the series again in 2018.

To all the obnoxious dispicable as_h_l_ YANKER fans if I had 1.7 bil I could buy anything same as you. Oh by the way post #55 it is not A-God it is A-roid or RODLICKER lets get it right. It took 9 long painful years( including the one year where you couldnt even win one game to close out a series against a team that most of the posters here are trashing, so shut the F__K up) to save enough money to buy another, dont get me wrong there was a time when the yankers and all other real professional teams played to win and the players stayed with there teams. You and every other person on this sight knows there is not much loyalty left in all pro sports its all about the money and that is sad. I will commend your Mgr for helping that lady on the parkway, I also will commend Jeter because I personally think he is one the most professional players in baseball, that is all I the good things I have to say about the scum sucking low life YANKERS and the fans that have sold there souls to the devil. FROM A RED SOX FAN SINCE 1967 AND ONE FAN THAT DOES NOT GIVE A CRAP ABOUT ANY NY TEAM IN PRO SPORTS

Bay is gone. Beckett is on his way out. Papi can't compete without the juice. Neither can Papsmear. Neither can PEDroia. Wake turns 78 next week and will be undergoing back replacement surgery. Lowell will be 48 at the start of spring training. Still don't have a short stop. Still don't have a shot a the division. And the Yankees will outbid you for Holliday, Lackey, Halladay, and Mauer when the time comes just to keep them out of Bahstin. He he. Let the new Dynasty begin.

Ok some of these posts got a little off base with the Yankee fans(to be expected) but anyway back to the blog. Just because the Sox signed Hermida doesn't mean the Sox won't try resigning Bay and I don't think Epstein and the Sox management signed Hermida to replace Bays bat unless the Sox are signing someone like Matt Holiday also. Hermida would make a great backup outfielder.

So Jason Bay is leaving the Red Sox ~~ well ~~ at least they got a replacment from the Marlins. Pat Gillick built the Red Sox to compete and win. Four or five more players off the team, and they will have completely dismantled that.

Has anyone else noticed, but Theo and Terry did not drive in one run to win those WS rings, but their egos are big. so get rid of the ones that did. The BoSox need Bradley cause he likes temper tantrums too.

The situation I see here is that Theo will be letting Jason Bay leave via free agency which is a mistake. I believe in the young bucks that help in rebuilding and setting the base for the future but Bay is rock solid in his hitting, fielding, and above all, he is a prime example of how a team player conducts himself. Epstein will screw that up. He thinks too hard on his long term strategy without looking closely at what the team has and needs in a short term mindset. Both have to be considered. He really should be looking at pitching and a solid replacement for Ortiz who is heading downhill. His recovery from his wrist problem became a mental block to hitting. Nuff said.....
