Only a bruise: Lester struck near right knee

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Jon Lester(notes) was able to joke, so his right leg must have felt relatively good.

“Still attached, so we’re going in the right direction,” the Boston pitcher said.

Lester was knocked out of Friday night’s 9-5 loss to the New York Yankees by a third-inning liner off the bat of Melky Cabrera(notes). The ball hit near Lester’s right knee, and he sustained only a bruised quadriceps. X-rays were negative.

“It seems like it’s getting better. This morning it wasn’t as tight as I thought it was going to be,” he said Saturday. “Moving around pretty good— just seems stairs are bothering me a little bit right now.”

Lester has been Boston’s top pitcher in the second half. Before taking Friday’s loss, he had been 6-0 with a 2.44 ERA in 11 starts from July 25 on.

He hopes not to miss a turn but could be pushed back, depending on how he feels.

“I think all things considered, he looks fantastic,” manager Terry Francona said. “Our medical people did a good job jumping on it right away, icing it and steaming it and doing all that stuff. He’s doing all right.”

Lester's alright...Dice-K's stuff is back...that's the news we need to hear. If 'Tek can find his bats, we'll be fine. This series meant nothing. We are playing with an eye towards setting our postseason roster, not grinding out a win. Several of my coworkers are bright Yankees fans (knowledgeable baseball fans) who feel EXACTLY the same way. This series didn't have the urgency or electricity as both Tito and Girardi are getting their postseason lineups in working order.

Austin R: Reason why Tek is still in there is because Francona is VERY loyal to his players. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If I am correct, Tek has a 5 million mutual option so expect to see Tek in a Sox uniform for 2010.

    @poster #46,

you realize the red sox were heavily courting rodriguez too, and he was actually about to sign with them before he came to NY?

this pretty much completely invalidates your statement... he couldve also been a red sock because of his same roided stats...

New Yorkers are too stupid to realize that this is the most important thing today, not what happened in the game in Steinbrenner Palace.

And my point Scott A. is that A-rod wouldn't be a yank today if the juice wouldn't have helped him put up the numbers he did back in his juiced days.

It is idiots like you who sit at home with nothing better to do then try to start fights on a computer because your probly to small of a man to do it face to face.

So whats your point Jen B? or are you just another babbling idiot from Boston?

I think it is funny how all the yanks fans are on papi for roids. All thats right didn't a yank show positive in the hight of his career. Maybe that why tex is so good maybe he is getting second hand roid buzz.

Too bad Lester wasn't put out for the season, that would give all the whiners in Redsux nation an excuse to why they will lose.. Or maybe roid user Ortiz will pass him some juice so the sux can try to win another JUICED UP series.

so if the bosox can win their trip to cali, we'll see who has the last laugh this year. sox were good in the first half compared to the beat up Yanks, now the Yanks are healthy and the sox had to deal with injuries....october looms. Yank pitching needs to gel in the post season and A-Rod needs to deliver- they can't pitch around him and Tex!

Listen.... I HATE the Yankees...Especially "A-Fraud"...and honestly that ass clown has YET to earn his cash withthe team when it counts. The Post Season. That being said, as a DIE HARD Red Sox Fan..... I believe THIS Yankee team can overcome that and wina world series even IF...., ah who are we kidding WHEN A' Fraud folds like a discount lawn chair under the big lights of the playoffs! Derek Jeter is the 2009 MVP. Hands down. Not just at the plate, but inthe field, AND in the clubhouse. Derek Jeter is the consumate professional and has once again proven to be the most consistent Yankee in the last 10 years! And whether Baseball, and my fellow Red Sox fans want to admit it, he is dominating all year in 2009. A class act! If CC Sabathia can even be 75% of the pitcher he is SUPPOSED to be, then the Yankees will win this years World Championship going Away..... Even WITH Madonna's ex steroid@#$%tail gulper A Fraud.... and Manager "Joe"..."Light" Gerardi. Give them both there due....and I will be the first to admit..... barring a huge collapse, it is Yankees World Series to lose! Gordon "Lug Nutzz" Stewart

Funny how people talk so much schitt when things are going well for their team, before the season ends and the World Series is even played! I would love to see these same band-wagoners on here in about three or four weeks.
Nationwide, we all know which one of these two teams is more hated, and which has the classier fans as well. Let us touch base in a month, I will expect each and every one of you back here then!
    Over and out!

It never fails to amaze me how these discussions end up so far off any logical point. I am a die hard Yankee fan. But, I am also a fan of the game and I have to admit I have respect for Boston. For anyone to imply that what happened to Lester last night was intentional is just plain ignorant and doesn't deserve any further discussion. Like someone already said, shut up and play ball.

I'm a Yankee fan and i do hate the Sox, but at the same time as a pretty knowledgeable fan, I respect them.Based on this season, anyone who watches and knows baseball can't say objectively that its not the Yankees year. The Red Sox have had better years and even in this season, they probably are still the second best team in baseball.Injuries have hit them pretty good as well as theo's bad winter signings of Smoltz and Penny. But even through that, they are still there and dangerous. But this has nothing to do with the Yankees. Since A-Rods the yankees have beenare lights out compared to everyone else playing at a 650 winning percentage. I don't know how you can argue that.
