Red Sox put Lowrie on DL with irritated forearm

NEW YORK (AP)—The Boston Red Sox have placed shortstop Jed Lowrie(notes) on the 15-day disabled list with an irritated left forearm and selected right-hander Enrique Gonzalez’s(notes) contract from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said on Saturday that Lowrie will fly to Arizona to have his arm examined. Francona says the team doesn’t think it’s serious, but decided to get it checked out while Lowrie is on the DL.

Gonzalez was scheduled to start for Pawtucket on Saturday, but instead will give the Red Sox some length in the bullpen after Friday night’s 2-0 loss to the New York Yankees in 15 innings.

Also, All-Star left fielder Jason Bay(notes) felt good after testing his injured right hamstring with some running before Saturday’s game against New York.

    STILL don't get why the BoSox felt so compelled to get either Gonzalez or Martinez when they needed a SS more than anything (well, other than more pitching). No way this team wins it all with that rotation and a pair of SS's that shouldn't be starting for a AAA team.

    I feel sorry for Smoltz...He has done his part for baseball as an incredible pitcher but he needs to just wrap it up. Good win Yankees! Beckit is next :)

    Sox are done this year. Not a knock on them, just being realistic.
    This WBC series DURING SPRING TRAINING still steams me.
    Dice-K used himself up for his country-and left the Red Sox holding the ($53 Million) bag.
    Another one of Bud Selig's greed motivated ideas.
    Bargain basement Smoltz experiment done-STOP putting him out there.
    Penny starting to look the same-thought he started out OK, but lately....
    It seems the Sox had all their eggs in Teixeira basket, and when he went with Yanks, it killed them.
    Who knew steroid issue would hit this team so hard.
    Ortiz a disaster-on and off the field.
    Why oh why can't they find a decent shortstop?
    Johnny Damon twenty home runs-get the test cup out real quick.

    tonight's disaster was a forgone conclusion...i couldn't believe they were going to trot out smoltz yet again ...one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!!! does smoltz have pictures of theo or tito with young boys??? i don't get it, yeah he's a great guy but so am i and i can't get anyone out either...please say this experiment is over, i'm begging you

    I am of course,being from Tampa, a huge Rays fan, just like the Buccs i watched them lose and lose and then finally success, but i played the game myself (Baseball) and when Bo SOX and tampa
    get together it is always a fun series, and i gotta tell ya, Youk is just plain awesome. I have complete
    respect for a selfless player in this day of money and egos. Youklis is a class act all the way, luv'em
    or hat'em, you gotta give it to em!!! and i haven't even mentioned his BAT!!!

    This game was a disaster from the get go .. Smoltz has no reason starting this game - Theo needed to obtain a pitcher to help fill Wakefield's injury. With Penny and Smoltz in the rotation and Bucholz's inconsistency we better pray the bats wake up in a damn hurry !

    And now Lowrie got hurt again ? Great ! I cannot stand Nick Green.

    I guess the Yankees took advantage of the situation tonight and really took it to em'. Nice job New York.

    Please I cant take no more Smoltz is done we made a ,mistake stop throwing him out there and hoping for the best we kept them kids and would not trade for Halladay i dont care do something and please take Penny with him,these 2 just cant win here i tried to watch 1 more time he cant pitch anymore you get old and it happens sorry it happens to us all,come on francona just cant keep throwing this guy out there.It will always just mean a loss,thats not what you should be doing ,we made bad moves i knew at when we did it Smoltz and Penny just dont have it. This is killing me to watch the team i love so much just lose when they know it too when these 2 pitch unless they score 12 runs they will lose stop it please please i cant take it.
