Hernandez agrees to $3M, 1-year deal with Reds

  • Print

CINCINNATI (AP)—Catcher Ramon Hernandez(notes) agreed Monday to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Reds after Cincinnati declined his $8 million option.

The deal includes a $3.25 million option for 2011 that would become guaranteed if Hernandez plays in 120 games next season. If he plays in fewer, the Reds do not have the ability to exercise the option.

Hernandez played in only 81 games last season because of a knee injury that required surgery in July. He hit .258 with 13 doubles, five homers and 37 RBIs. He also started at first base 18 times when Joey Votto(notes) was sidelined.

Cincinnati obtained Hernandez in a trade that sent Ryan Freel(notes) to Baltimore after the 2008 season.

He made $8.5 million last season, the final guaranteed year on his $27.5 million, four-year deal with Baltimore. His 2010 option had carried a $1 million buyout.

How about this number .328—C Ramon Hernandez's average with runners in scoring position, which allowed him to drive in more than three times as many runs as backup Ryan Ha@#$%n (37 to 11) in only 36 more at-bats.

Timothy B, They have open try outs, of course you need TALENT to play in the majors, not just a computer.

Hernandez, before the knee injury, was the Reds MVP, he took over first base when your glory boy Voto went AWOL because his head wasn't right. He also works well with all of our latin pitchers. If you look at the record with him and without him you would realize. They went from above .500 and second to the basement. O.K. let your ignorance show and @#$% about that.

Tough break for a guy to get a $5 million dollar decrease in pay, and still get awarded a contract for $3 million dollars after calling in sick 50% of the year! I'm in the wrong business!

To buy out Hernandez costs $1 million. To re-sign him for one year at $3 million, the effective cost is only $2 million for this catcher. Coming from a 4 year contract at $27.5 million, guaranteed at $8.5 million last season, there is no doubt that Hernandez is not what he used to be. Often times, he is just not as effective as Ha@#$%n in all aspects of the catching game but should be still good as a back-up.

I like it, given the FA options at catcher. Varitek would have cost this much and unlikely he'd leave Boston, which he didn't. Barajas, Snyder and the Eldest Molina are no better than Ramon, for 1 year at least. And Snyder we'd have had to trade for.
