Ryan says Rangers sale will return focus to field

  • Print

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Chuck Greenberg would have withdrawn his bid to buy the Texas Rangers had Nolan Ryan aligned himself with another group.

“There’s only one Texas Rangers, only one Nolan Ryan. They need to be together,” Greenberg said on a conference call Wednesday night.

A day after the investor group that is headed by the Pittsburgh sports attorney and includes Ryan gained exclusive negotiating rights to purchase the Rangers from Tom Hicks, Greenberg said Ryan’s involvement was paramount to his pursuit of the team.

Hicks, whose family will maintain a minority stake as one of about a dozen investors in Greenberg’s group, selected the bid over two others Tuesday. That was the deadline set by baseball commissioner Bud Selig for Hicks to submit a prospective buyer for the team.

Now the sides will work to negotiate a final deal. At least 75 percent of baseball’s owners will then have to approve the sale, which likely won’t be completed until opening day in April, or later.

Greenberg, who would be the managing general partner and CEO, said about 80 percent of his investors are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Ryan, the Hall of Fame pitcher who has been the team’s president for the past two seasons, would remain in that role.

“He would have complete authority on the baseball side,” Greenberg said. “I have complete confidence in him.”

While Greenberg would have the final say on decisions, especially daily operations, there would also be a board of directors to help oversee items such as the annual budget and major projects. Hicks, who said throughout the process of selling that he’d like to maintain an involvement with the team, would likely be one of up to nine board members.

Greenberg owns minor league baseball teams in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and State College, Pa., and recently sold a third team. He previously represented buyers for two NHL teams, Pittsburgh in 1999 and Florida in 2001, and plans to relocate and live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Ryan said the pending change of ownership should relieve some of the franchise’s financial stress.

“We’ll be able to focus more on what goes on the field and try to be competitive, and not be distracted at times by other problems,” Ryan said Wednesday on a separate conference call.

Still, that doesn’t mean the Rangers will see an immediate infusion of cash for player moves or changes in Ryan’s approach.

“I don’t foresee us going against what we have done over the last three years from developing our own talent and bringing it up through our system,” Ryan said.

Hicks Sports Group this year defaulted on $525 million in loans tied to the Rangers and the NHL’s Dallas Stars, which Hicks has owned since 1996. Hicks has said that was a deliberate move to force lenders to renegotiate terms of the deals.

While the pending sale likely will have no impact on what the Rangers can do this offseason, Greenberg said there will be additional money in the budget for payroll if an opportunity arises to help improve the team once the sale is completed. Such as potential midseason moves.

“Finances will not get in the way of making that decision,” Greenberg said.

The Rangers haven’t been to the playoffs since 1999, after winning all three of their AL West titles in a four-year span. They have never won a playoff series.

But Texas is coming off only its second winning season (87-75) since its last playoff appearance. The Rangers, with a roster filled with young players, finished second in the AL West behind the Los Angeles Angels and in the AL wild-card race behind Boston. They won one more game than Detroit or Minnesota, who shared the AL Central lead after 162 games.

“It’s clear there is a tremendous amount of pent-up enthusiasm for the Rangers that is just waiting to explode,” Greenberg said. “With all the things the Rangers have done the last few years on the baseball side, the club is poised to have a great future. … Hopefully our group can build off that foundation that is already in place.”

It sure would be nice if the Rangers could make some payroll commitment now. I'll get slammed for saying it, but I'd like to see Johnny Damon in Ranger red.

Most franchises are ran by people who dont know the game of baseball. Nolan Ryan is baseball. I hope he can turn this thing around and make the Rangers a contender.

Dave H - why did you have to go negative on George W.?

After all, he was in charge of the Rangers the last time the Rangers made it to the playoffs. George W. would actually be an excellent person to run this organization.

Having said that, I do agree that keeping Nolan Ryan in place is perhaps one of the keys to helping this organization build a new legacy of winning.

Let's keep this about baseball...not about politics...for the record, I appreciated the things that Pres. George W. did while running this country, and I hold the Democrat party responsible for the years of abuse and damage that has come to this nation...we are clearly seeing under the current administration that so much power is showing us a magnification of how bad the Dems will ruin this nation...but hey, let's get back to baseball talk and celebrate the new ownership and the business of baseball in capable hands.

Let's hope that the financial matters under Hicks have not damaged the Rangers too much, and that they can continue developing and building from the current plan. It's time in 2010 for more Ranger youth to rise up to the challenge and be some strong contributors...leading this team into an AL West Championship and perhaps moving forward in the Post-Season!!!

Sorry Cd. For someone bashing another poster for how wrong they are, you should read a bit more before you type. The Texas Rangers have the number one ranked farm system two years in a row now. I just did a search to make sure before I said anything because I was pretty sure that poster was correct. He was right. Multiple sites (both SI and MLB.com listed Texas as the number one farm system in MLB. Now go home and learn how to play nice.

Max: Obviously you think you know everything about baseball at least in your mind you do! Before you go assuming anything it's the 4th best farm system in rankings not the 1st, I thought they should have traded Young when the trading was good as one player never makes a team. Hate you tell you buddy but JD doesn't make every call in building the farm system. I'll give him Andrus, however that was not all him as profoundly claimed, let's not forget all the bad trades and a lot of these players I saw playing for Bakerfield back in 2004. Just because a GM wants something doesn't mean he has the final say in it. I hope JD gives you some kick backs for your profound loyalty to his every move!

2 great things have now happened to the Rangers this offseason, this sale by Tom Hicks and getting rid of Rudy Jaramillo. Tom Hicks only cared about making money and did not even care about winning. He is just a big southern dummy with a lot of money that doesn't know crap about owning a team. And as far as Rudy is concerned, under his tutiledge the Rangers have only gotten as far as the home run can carry them. They NEVER situational hit. They NEVER take enough pitches and never get enough walks. Their on base% is horrible. So many times I have seen under Rudy the first two men get on base in an inning and the next 2 guys strike out, often on bad pitches. I mean sure some players (esp power hitters) are prone to the strikeout, but a few of them take a lot of walks too (ex. Adam Dunn, Jack Cust, etc.) These guys on base% are pretty decent, but not the Rangers power hitters. It's either home run or strikeout for them. GOOD RIDDANCE Rudy! I am finally excited about the Rangers again after all these years, a good young team not owned by Tom Hicks that if their pitching keeps developing, I bet they could win the west in 2010. The Angels lost Lackey and Figgins, so they can't possibly get better. GO RANGERS

CD: You know nothing about baseball. JD has, whether you like it or not, built the #1 farm system in the majors, and was the reason they put in Elvis at SS last year, when your type were probably complaining about how poor Michael Young was getting the screwjob from the Front Office again. Feliz, Andrus, Holland, and many others will be because of JD and his scouting team, not Nolan or Hicks or any other arbitrary person you decide.

#37 CD, JD bamboozled the Braves on the Teixiera trade. Was Mike Lynn the Braves GM? That trade was a BIG reason we contended most of last season!

He signed Omar to help Elvis, he picked up O'Day..O'Day..O'Day..O'Day por nada and Grilli was a great addition until he got hurt. And don't forget the Pudge trade. He played well and sold a lot of tickets and dammit, it was great just to see him in a Rangers uniform again! So you see, he did a lot more than squat last year.

I think JD's done a pretty good job with what he's had to work with (Hicks)! I think it was very prudent NOT to give up what Toronto wanted for Halladay. Our best 4-5 top prospects for an every 5th game pitcher? I don't think we had the money to pay him anyway! One of the best things JD has done is NOT make a stupid trade last year at the deadline. We really needed hitting anyway! Still do at 1B and C. I think the Rangers are finally doing it the right way. Build from within and add a piece here or there that makes sense and is reasonable. Don't panic and trade away the future!

About half of Washington's statements don't make any damn sense. He doesn't know how to handle a pitching staff, make out an intelligent lineup(he puts 3-4 RHH's followed by 3 LHH's) or make late inning defensive adjustments(he shoulda took Hank off 1B in the 8th several times last year). That cost us a couple of games with Hank's errors! C.J. pitches the 8th and Frankie pitches the 9th regardless. My only positive on Washington is he shows more fire than Wade (Prozac) Phillips. I think. Maybe. Sometimes. Maybe a little Habanero sauce on his seeds would fire him up this year! I would like to see him kick a little dirt on the Umps, too!

I'm hoping Boo will be the Manager in 2011.

There will never be a winner at Arlington where the rangers play untill they cover the satdium and air condition it. The heat in August and September takes too much out of the ballplayers. Every team whithers on the vine so to say for the last 38 years. Bet against the rangers ever winning a world series is a sure bet.

Wait I am just getting started, let me jump on the Jon Daniels and Ron Washington train too. JD is nothing but a Hicks yes man and Ron Washington leaves a lot to be desired in the managers position. JD first and foremost didn't do squat the reason this team managed to finish 2nd in the west last year vs the prior 2 years with the same or close to the same personnel is because Nolan gave them all the venture treatment and stuck his foot so far up their back sides they were tasting leather and that has nothing to do with JD not to mention he brought in Maddux. Ron Washington although he may be able to articulate his words on camera I have never seen an ounce of ownership or competitive fiber in his bone since he has been manager. How many games did he get tossed from last year because of a blown call? I believe that would be none because he's more interested in his David's Sunflower Seeds!

@19 Let's get this right, first Hicks never bought the Stanley Cup he just bought the best team available to move that had all the pieces in tact to win the Cup and managed to keep it all together while moving the team. That's evident by how bad they suck now and holding on to players that needed to hang the skates up awhile ago. The cowboys can't win in Dec because it's not Aikmen or Stauback under center and well Cuban the name speaks for itself. Tom hicks is a moron and as long as he is associated with the Rangers or the Stars they will not compete for the ultimate prize even if Nolan is here. If it wasn't evident in the comments he made in reference to being shocked the A-rod was on the juice when the rest of his lineup was all on it then your naive or just stupid. Look I am a NHL fan from the Northwest living in DFW and even I know baseball is america's past time and with 80 plus home games a year you have more to loose with leining a MLB franchise then if you did it to an NHL team. So that makes Tom Hick not only a moron as an owner of multiple sports franchises but also a moron as a business man! Don't get me wrong I live and die with the Rangers and the Stars but mark my words Tom Hicks will manage to screw it up somehow!

Actually, the Rangers should send Josh Lewin to GITMO on a USO tour. After about 1 hr of listening to him, the detainees would say "TO HELL WITH PARADISE AND 70 VIRGINS" and kill themselves and the United States would no longer have any detainee problem.

Biily V, it's because you live in the Houston area which is the sewer outlet for the DFW area (Trinity River) ! Oops just flushed another one.

Seriously, I am saddened to learn that the Hicks family will still be involved with the team. Hicks' deliberate move to force the lenders to renegotiate didn't work so well did it? They called his bluff and the team and the fans suffered because of it. And he still has the gall to want to be involved going forward? Have you no decency, Sir? As the house in Amityville said " GET OUT"!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least Nolan will still be involved. I suggest at the first sign of any monkey business from the Hicks family that Nolan gives them the Ventura treatment! Or lock them in a room and make them listen to Josh Lewin jokes for days. Wait, that would be cruel and unusual punishment!

    GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hicks has proved to Rangers fans that he doesn't care about the team, he only cares about making the most money he can squeez out of the Rangres. Winning has nothing to do with it. Mark Cuban wants to win. Jerry Jones wants to win. Tom Hicks only wants to make money. No fan wants him involved in the Rangers ownership in any way, shape, or form. Fans do want Nolan Ryan to be involved in ownership, or at least as the Ranger's president.

New Ranger's ownership need to get settled very soon. We need to move away from the Hicks era. Bud Selig it's time to flex you power.

Anybody that would not find a way to keep Nolan Ryan on the payroll is really not a true baseball person... Dont allow George W get is hands on 'em We as fans deserve a good entertaining product on the field, court or rink. After all we end up paying for it...

I live and die with the Rangers. This suspense is killing me. I really want Nolan Ryan in charge of this club and holding up his own example to the pitchers on the staff. There's just no arguing with his longevity and results and I think the young pitchers are in awe of him. Beyond that, I don't care who owns them as long as they let the young players come along and prove themselves. This could be a very exciting team over the coming years.
