Rangers shut down OF Josh Hamilton for season

  • Print

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—The Texas Rangers shut down outfielder Josh Hamilton(notes) for the remainder of the season Tuesday to rest the pinched nerve in his back.

The Rangers began the day six games behind Boston in the AL wild-card standings with six games to play. Texas’ loss to the Angels on Monday night clinched Los Angeles’ fifth AL West title in six seasons.

Hamilton has missed 21 of the Rangers’ past 23 games with a back problem related to injuries from a crash into an outfield fence. Manager Ron Washington said the Rangers are looking toward Hamilton’s future by deciding not to ask their slugger to limp through the pain for a few final games.

“His back trouble isn’t getting any better,” Washington said. “Even if he did happen to go out on the field and play these last few games, we think it’s better to let Josh get healthy and come back to spring training ready to go.”

Hamilton was an All-Star last season while leading the AL in RBIs, and the former No. 1 pick’s improbable recovery from drug addiction and alcohol abuse became a national inspiration. But this season has been an ordeal at times— including the Rangers’ previous trip to Anaheim in August, when online publication of party photos forced Hamilton to publicly acknowledge a slip in his sobriety last January.

Hamilton hit .268 with 10 homers and 54 RBIs this season while missing long stretches with injuries. He spent two weeks on the disabled list ending in early May with a strained rib cage muscle from a run into a wall, but he hurt himself again six days after returning while charging into another wall.

Hamilton had surgery June 9 to repair a slight abdominal tear, but said the pinched nerve and accompanying pain were related to his earlier injuries and rehabilitation. He received several painkilling injections while attempting to come back earlier.

Hamilton was batting .346 with 25 RBIs over his last 32 games before his latest injury absence, raising his average 48 points. He was the Rangers’ designated hitter on Friday and Saturday against Tampa Bay after missing their previous 19 games, but his health didn’t improve.

Although Washington refuses to make excuses, the Rangers’ chase of just the fourth playoff berth in franchise history was seriously hampered by the injury absence of their two best hitters. In addition to Hamilton’s woes, third baseman Michael Young(notes) just returned to the lineup with two hits Monday night after missing all but one game since Sept. 1, when he strained his hamstring.

“You can’t expect young players to come in there and pick it up to the same level as these guys,” Washington said. “We’re still trying to win some games because we don’t want Seattle to catch us (for second place in the AL West), but we’re thinking about the future as well.”

Texas (85-71) began the night five games ahead of the Mariners (80-76), who host the Rangers for a season-ending, three-game series this weekend.

Washington said he wants to take a look at Julio Borbon(notes) in center field before the season ends, and Taylor Teagarden(notes) will get a chance to catch “several games.” Young relievers Pedro Strop(notes) and Guillermo Moscoso(notes) also will get ample work.

actually Hamilton gets tested every three (3) days, all year, every year until he leaves the league. On another note, it is interesting how the dregs also known as sports writers here on yoohoo recycle this article from when Josh was was having his surgery and Davis got sent down to OKC two months ago. Perhaps they finally ran out of their allocation of the internet? No, more like it is easier to edit a column instead of posting a new one.

I don't remember that happening on Red Sox stories.

yeah, if you had a clue about him being a drug addict, he gets tested not only "more often" than most players, but three times a week.

Er, to the last few people who commented about him being on steroids or probably being a drug addict, you might want to do a little research. He IS an addict, though he's clean now, and part of the deal (per the SI article I read) is that he gets drug tested more often than most players. He pulled himself out of a dark place most people never have the misfortune to reach, and managed to make it into the big leagues again, and you're cutting him down? Yeah, you try it, see how you do.

I hope he gets better soon, because he plays pretty darn well generally when he's healthy. Everyone has bad seasons for injuries, even the iron horses of the game. Cut him a little slack.

Beatcowboy, I'm embarrassed for you. Fighting drug addiction is slightly different from cheating with steroids. What a moron! Nice try with the race card idiot. People like you are why real crys of racism get wrongly ignored. Go back to sleep, moron!

I dunno ... looked to me as if he were having a grand time during his "fall," ...
Why are the white guys always given the benefit of the doubt and ... you get the
idea ... If Bonds didn't have the pride in himself that we've all seen would he still
be playing? Would the fans have "prayed" for him? Would they worry about his
future? Looked to me like those three young ladies had other thoughts on their
minds. My guess ... if this mediocre man were not of the caucasian persuasion,
then he'd be either outrighted to the minors or released. The door is open, and it
is clearly time to have that long overdue discussion on the role of race in America.

P.S. I am an older white fellow, with pretty good vision ...

Well to night we get to see what the Rangers can do with what they should have started the with. Davis is a good kid, great defense, but you have to hit in the bigs if you play first for your team to be a contender. He will be back soon if this doesn't screw up the kid's head. Josh looked good when I saw him in Frisco the other night, hope that trip to OKC went as well. Yes I know he was 2 for 20 or some awful line like that but his timing is for big league stuff not the slow pitch softball stuff at AA and AAA ball.

I'm glad Davis is going down. He sucks bad right now. Lot of talent but is way overmatched by even marginal SP. Blalock moving to 1B helps me. 20 team roto with 5 OF slots and Marlon Byrd and David Murphy are helping a lot in such a deep league. One will DH and the other play LF. As for Hamilton. He wasn't very good early, before he got hurt, and it'll be interesting to see what he does. 4-27 against minor league pitching, while a small sample doesn't say much. Or that he has got untracked.

Rangers fans stuffing the ballot boxes?? Only 1 Ranger is starting. If they were,Young and Kinsler would be starting too. Look at all the Red Sox in the lineup if you want to talk about stuffing the ballot box. Even Youkilis almost beat out Texiera. The starting lineup rarely has the best 8 guys in it, its more of a popularity contest.

Hamilton will be back very soon, with force. Davis has not been sent down because there is simply no one who can play first base day after day to replace him. Jones is an outfielder, and Blalock does not have the shoulder for it any longer, so you are looking at stacking errors on first or losing Blalock to injury.

In the farm system right now, there is no one to bring up for first, Smoak is coming back from the DL and Max does not have a bat this season, of course he is only a first baseman by default anyway.

So Davis will probably split time with Blalock at first for the next month or so, until he starts to get better at bats.

his drive isn't there this year....seems happy just loving the sober life and jesus....no edge.

    please tell me i'm wrong.....please!
