Glory Days: Torre takes in Bruce Springsteen show

  • Print

These are glory days, indeed, for Joe Torre.

Though his team was facing a 3-1 deficit against the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL championship series, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager spent Tuesday across the street from Citizens Bank Park at the Spectrum for a Bruce Springsteen concert.

Torre saw The Boss once before at Madison Square Garden, but spent more time watching a basketball game on TV in a luxury box than Springsteen and the E Street Band.

This time, he kept his eye on the show.

“The thing that I found really remarkable is how every single person there feels like he’s one of them,” Torre said Wednesday before Game 5. “He connects with all those people, whether they’re sitting close or way back in the upper deck somewhere. His energy is crazy.”

Torre, still looking to lead the Dodgers to baseball’s promised land, might hope his Dodgers adopt at least one Springsteen lyric: no retreat, no surrender.

Maybe it was a good sign that “Born to Run” blared through the ballpark as the Dodgers took batting practice.

TEX’S DEFENSE: Mark Teixeira’s(notes) defense is nearly as valuable to the New York Yankees as his bat.

The first baseman credits his father for teaching him the finer points as a kid, including fielding lots of grounders.

“My dad always stressed the importance of defense,” Teixeira said Wednesday. “As I’ve gotten into the big leagues, I’ve realized it’s even more important.”

Teixeira’s bat has been quiet against his former team, the Los Angeles Angels, in the ALCS, but his defense is being talked about.

“Without Tex, we wouldn’t be here,” pitcher CC Sabathia(notes) said. “Not just because he hit 39 homers, but just his glove. Some of the plays he makes, he saves everybody. I didn’t realize he was as good a player as he is.”

Teixeira has given the Yankees an upgrade at first base in his first season in New York over Jason Giambi(notes), who was more lumbering than nimble at the position.

“He had a play early in the season where he dove to his right, threw from his knees to throw to home plate and save a run and save the game for us,” manager Joe Girardi said of Teixeira. “He’s a complete player. Whether it’s defensive, baserunning, offensive. Thinking, talking about the game, he’s a complete player, and his defense has saved us a number of times this year.”

CHOOOOCH: He’s not a former MVP or an All-Star. And catcher Carlos Ruiz(notes) can easily get lost in the shuffle behind teammates such as Ryan Howard(notes), Chase Utley(notes) and Jimmy Rollins(notes).

But the Phillies are glad they have their “Chooch” to call the game—and deliver at the plate. Ruiz batted .313 against the Dodgers in last year’s NLCS and was 5 for 10 with a homer and four RBIs entering Game 5 on Wednesday night.

He’s earned the respect of Dodgers manager Joe Torre, a former catcher himself who can’t figure out a way to consistently get Ruiz out.

“It may not always be pretty, but he has a plan on what he wants to do, and he has good plate coverage, especially when he gets behind in the count,” Torre said. “Even though he hits eighth, certainly we learned early on it’s not somebody you want to take lightly.”

CALLING ALL RUNNERS: The Angels have rarely played with a lead against the Yankees in the AL championship series, mostly because they aren’t getting many runners on base.

Los Angeles has been outscored 23-9 in the first four games, including two that went extra innings.

“Some of our guys are seeing the ball well, swinging the ball well, with not a lot to show for it,” manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday. “Some of our guys are really a ways away from where they need to be. We have to find it in a hurry, that’s for sure.”

The Angels consistently delivered with runners in scoring position during the regular season, when they won the AL West. But against the Yankees, even when they’ve gotten on base, the Angels aren’t cashing in.

“If you’re not hitting home runs, you better get guys on base and then come through with some hits when they’re on base, and it can change the complexion of the game for us,” Scioscia said. “There’s a lot of good arms down there that are a mix and match to make it a little more difficult to get a read on guys as games progress. And some of our guys are definitely not in their comfort zone.”

MANUEL’S FUN: Three straight NL East titles, two trips to the NL championship series and a World Series have their perks. For Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, every day at the ballpark has been a blast.

With his down-home charm and mangled syntax, the affable Manuel is a hit with his players. He loves the game and it’s rubbed off on the Phillies, who were on the brink of reaching their second straight World Series.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys who love to play baseball, and that’s why they think in a winning way,” Manuel said. “I think we’ve got guys that like to pitch and we’ve got guys that like to play, and the guys that like to play, they stand out on the field.”

Manuel did not announce a Game 6 starter if the Phillies need one.

Torre should be fired so that he can watch all the concerts he wants. Suppose Manny or one of the other players had done this. He never seems to be attentive to the game anyway - just sitting there staring from under the bill if his cap. Hire KIRK GIBSON and watch the Dodgers succeed.

It was only a matter of time before NY made it to the World Series. Look at the $$$$ they've spent. They should always have the best team year after year if they're willing to pay for it

C'mon, give the Yankees some credit, this is a team that didn't make the playoffs last year. Besides, this will always be the team that blew a 3 game lead in the ALCS.

#295, first you need owner unity on salary cap, there isnt even that... and that is because 1 team, the all mighty Yankees and their investors dont want it. Once you get Owner Unity... there will be a salary cap.. The other sports didnt want a salary cap, players @#$%ed... but once all the owners agreed, players will have no choice. Of course that day will never happen in baseball because the Yankees have too much say and they directly affect baseball and its economics.

They control baseball like how the United States USED to control global economy.

I find it hard to believe how blind most of these So-called fans ignore the facts. The New York Yankees are not the only team to payout Muilti-million dallor contracts, All of them do. A Elite few can afford to pay as well as The Yankees, thats even true in everyday life, I suppose the Phillies,Dodgers, and Angels pay thier Players with walmart Gift certificates,or even better they don't make any moeny at all they play just for the love of the game. WHATEVER.

When your team has revenue that is higher than most countries GDP and whose salary beats a good 4-5 teams COMBINED... Its stupid the Yankees havent won since 2000... This isnt a sport, its a stock market for the Yankees... If Yankees want to shut everyone up, why not agree to a Salary Cap??? The only team that has disagreed to a Salary Cap is the yankees and their investors. Even Boston and NY Mets agree to a Salary cap. For even how large their market is, it isnt even close to the Yankees. This is why Football and Basketball has been more popular than Baseball the past 20-30 yrs.. Its a fact... Thanks Yankees for @#$% up America's pasttime... The Yankees has become the Goldman Sachs of baseball and has been for many years...

OK Yankee haters riddle me this. What other team in ANY sport has won as many titles as the Yankees? NONE!!! You all need to stop hating on the Yankees just because your team CAN'T OR WONT spend money to get better players. Yes other teams have a strong farm system and it does them well, that is until the players get tired of working for peanuts and move on to a bigger and better pay day. Complain all you want to but the Yankees do what every other team tries to do pay thier players and pay them well. So harp all you want to about the Yankees buying Championships but if your sorry team could do the same they WOULD and don't think that they wouldn't. CHOKE ON THAT.

As far as Manny goes, I'm a Red Sox fan and trust me--this story is no surprise...Manny does what Manny wants and everyone seems to think that it's ok...the Sox got tired of his crap long before he felt disrespected and did the right thing to unload him on the first team that thought THEY would be the ones to make him happy--Good Luck Dodgers--you need it for the game tonight and however long you want to keep the overgrown toddler that you threw a pile of money at....

As far as Mariano--he doesn't throw spitters--get over it guys, he's good, the team is good this year, Angels fans face facts--you aren't getting beat so much as you are giving it away...I've seen it before, many many times--Rivera doesn't need to cheat--if the only reason he's pitching teams into a corner is because of spitters, he must have one hell of a saliva issue--he's beatable, the teams he's facing this October aren't capable of beating him or the Yankees right now, end of story--and I feel for ya, I hate the Yankees, but if you don't want to watch them prance around and win--beat them!

Anyone who knows anything about "spitters" will tell you that you don't spit a wad on the ball. It's just a VERY SMALL amount of a foreign substance - vaseline, sweat, spit, or a scuff mark (remember Neikro's sandpaper in the glove), etc. - that has the affect of changing the rotation and direction of the ball. If Moe was doing this, doesn't anyone think he would have been called on it years ago? Get real people.

Just to make another point about "buying a championship".... the Mets have an extremely high payroll of players that did not come up through their system... the Mets finished well under .500... The Yankees payroll is very high, but they also choose to pay their own... Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Pettitte, they all recieved huge contracts, but those were their players from the very beginning. As far as the steriod allegations go, it is pretty funny how the Mitchell report, written by a former Red Sox employee, seemed to just leave out the fact that Manny and Ortiz were on roids, for any of you who have not seen it yet, go to rotoinfo.com and check the real supposed steroid list, I think it is interesting how there are quite a few more Red Sox than just Manny and Ortiz on there, Derek Lowe, and Bronson Arroyo also appear, just to name a few. You can spend all the money you want, but you still have to spend it wisely. The Yankee payroll dropped this year, but they sit one game away from a world series. And I would also like to include this, Bobby Abreu... the best $16M never spent........ thank you for signing with the angels you've truly helped us out.... lets go yankees baby.

I usually love to read haters. I love the fact that when Boston Cheats, nobody wants to talk about it. I love how ESPN makes A-Rod out to be Hitler, and Big Pappi to be a saint. It's just funny, and I usually will just laugh about it.

When it is about someone as classy as a person as Moe, it turns a fun loving hatred for another team into a sad and desperate attempt to point out flaws. I could see them talking junk...THEY YANKEES ARE ALL HOMERUNS (until last night). A-rod for MVP? He is batting .260 in this series (again until last night). But trying to tear down one of the most amazing, stand up players in all of baseball? It is just sad.

BTW A-Roids...still funny, But he sucked with steroids in the post season. How about an Article of the power of Kate. That is a playful funny article? Or maybe him trying to catch Jeter in celebs?
Moe is where most NY fans draw the line.

3 down, 1 to go. Yankees cheat, Yankees suck, blah blah we've heard it all before.

I love it when haters come out and whine like this. Please, keep up the rhetoric. So we can find the real baseball fans who love the game and make reasonable arguments and ignore the stupid ones who write "cheaters", "unAmerican" (using that kind of thinking, losing is an American tradition!) and "buying a championship".

Yankees and Phils is gonna be a blast.

Just like I've said on many other posts. Everyone wants to cry about the Yankee's buying a championship. The Angels spend 70% of their payroll on bought players. The Yankee's spend 60%. on bought players. You chumps would realize that if you ever took the time to actually think about what you're saying. As another previous post pointed out as well... Yankees have 14 players who came up through the system or were not with another team. So keep crying. Arguing the payroll line is old and played out. You would think the hater's could come up with something new. I guess not, since hating normally comes out of jealousy.
