Pirates put RHP Jose Contreras on bereavement list

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Right-hander Jose Contreras was placed on the bereavement list Friday by the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Jared Hughes was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to take his spot in the bullpen.

Contreras must remain inactive for at least three days but cannot stay on the bereavement list for more than seven. He is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA over five appearances this season.

Hughes pitched 6 2-3 scoreless innings in six appearances with Indianapolis. He began the season with the Pirates and was 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 13 games.
