Jayson Werth proves his worth for NL champions

  • Print

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—With his long, scraggly blonde hair, scruffy face and slender frame, Jayson Werth(notes) looks more like a surfer than a power hitter.

It’s easy to overlook Werth in Philadelphia’s potent lineup. Ryan Howard(notes) and Jimmy Rollins(notes) are the former MVPs. Chase Utley(notes) is the perennial All-Star. Shane Victorino(notes) gets plenty of attention for his energy.

But Werth fits right in with all the big boppers on the Phillies. Given the chance to play every day, the right fielder had a breakout year. He’s carried his success into the postseason, helping the defending champions reach the World Series for the second straight year.

Werth batted .268 with 36 homers, 99 RBIs and 20 steals, earning a trip to the All-Star game in his first full season as a regular. He’s hitting .281 with five homers and 10 RBIs in nine playoff games.

“Ever since he came to Philly, he’s been getting better,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “The numbers that you see, to me he’s more capable. I think he can even do better, because I think he’s getting more consistent in his at-bats and his pitch selection.”

Werth’s emergence has made it difficult for opponents to pitch around Howard, who was MVP of the NL championship series against Los Angeles.

With Werth batting in the No. 5 spot, Howard has received just one intentional walk in the postseason. Pitching to either slugger has been a mistake.

“I like hitting behind Howie, even though it seems like there’s no one on base hitting fifth,” Werth said, referring to Howard’s RBI ability. “But it’s exciting. I get to drive in a lot of runs and be a big part of the lineup right in the middle of it. It’s a lot of fun, especially with this team.”

Werth is one of the most patient hitters in baseball. He had 91 walks in the regular season and led the majors in averaging 4.5 pitches per plate appearance.

Werth, 6-foot-5 and 222 pounds, has long arms and long legs, which helps his plate coverage. He can hit for power to the opposite field and had 21 homers to center or right.

“As long as he stays in what I call a strong, balanced hitting position, this guy, he is legit, man,” Manuel said. “He’s got a lot of power, and he hits the ball all over the field. He’s got pull power, and he can hit the ball to right field, center field, and he’s developed into a very tremendous right fielder. He’s been a big addition to our team, and he plays a big part in our success.”

Werth was one of former Phillies general manager Pat Gillick’s best finds. After sitting out the entire 2006 season with a wrist injury, Werth signed a one-year deal for $850,000.

He played well in a part-time role in ’07 and platooned with Geoff Jenkins(notes) for most of ’08 until taking over every day down the stretch. Werth finished last year with a .273 average, 24 homers, 67 RBIs and 20 steals. He boosted his average to .309 in the postseason and signed a $10 million, two-year contract in January.

Before he came to the Phillies, Werth’s career was in jeopardy because of a unique wrist injury. He spent a few months during the summer of ’06 wondering if he’d ever play again.

“There was a time where I didn’t know where I was at as far as my injury and what was going to happen,” Werth said. “I was sitting at home in Illinois, fishing off my boat, not having any idea what was going to happen. Baseball was done unless something got taken care of.”

Werth originally sustained the injury while playing for the Dodgers in 2005. He broke his left wrist in spring training when he got hit by a pitch from A.J. Burnett(notes). Werth played 102 games despite the injury, but his numbers dropped significantly. The wrist problems lingered in ’06 and he couldn’t play. Werth finally went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in August, and Dr. Richard Berger diagnosed the injury as a split tear of the UT ligament in his wrist.

“I was really hoping that the guys at Mayo Clinic knew what they were doing, and they did,” Werth said. “They diagnosed it and they did the surgery, and really it was not that big a deal, although it was very rare. I saw Dr. Berger was the only doctor at the time diagnosing and repairing my injury.”

To Dough562.....You certainly don't seem like you know what you are talking about. I can see not signing Ibanez after his contract runs out but not signing Werth????? If the Phils didn't sign him (but they will) some other team would snatch him up as soon as it was put out there that he was available. At the end of this contract i believe he will be 31 or 32. Do you consider that old? This guy if he has another great year in 2010 will be given a concract that will rival many others. I don't understand your thinking of not signing a player who can hit 270 hit 35 or more homers and drive in100 runs. Driving in 99 runs batting behind Howard is fantastic. If that's what you think so be it but you certainly are wrong.

Can't see signing Werth after next year due to we have two to three Outfielders in Taylor Brown and mayberry that we can save money.

What would you do if you had a chance to resign Howard, Utley,Rollins for a few more years if we can save $$$$ by not signing Werth and letting his contract run out and let one of the other Outfileders, three work for a position on the club.
Plus Ibanez's contract runs out in 2011.

Radio, older being relative to the young outfield talent coming up. Werth is definately not old and if he keeps playing and hitting like he has he'll be in that outfield for a few more years. Not rushing Raul out of town either. All being said the future looks bright.

Man, Wed can't come fast enough.... Go Phillies, Go Philadelphia!

31 is far from old. Stairs will retire soon and Ibanez is probably not going to play beyond the next two seasons. That makes room for Mayberry and Taylor (or Brown if he continues to progress).

The Phillies outfield is looking good for years. I actually like the fact that we have two older players, Raul and Jason, who are performing and probably can still perform going into next year with the young outfielders coming up. No long term contracts for Werth or Ibanez. Would be stupid. Gotta give Werth credit for what he's been doing the past few years, all of his numbers are solid but what impresses me is he has that "knack" for coming thru. Shall we say 'CLUTCH"?

    To Dan C #1
They have and did after game 1 of NLDS. Werth, Howard, Ruiz and 2 pitchers from the Phillies along with 5 random players from the Rockies.
There was 5 players from each team picked randomly at the beginning of the playoffs. Not sure of the other players, the only reason why the names of the Phils came out is because Werth let it slip in an interview after game 1.

Looks like he is clean so stop crying

Dodgers fans who are dissing Werth are just unhappy that their team let him go. He is a very good player who recovered from one of those injuries that can break a career (the broken bone in his hand), and turned it around. He has found a perfect spot hitting behind Howard. This spot is great for both, as neither can be pitched around effectively. But, beyond that, he is a great outfielder who can cover yard - he is great in center when Vic can't play. He hits, hits for power, and runs. He's a great fit for the Phils.

Werth is probably the best #5 hitter in the National League, if not the entire MLB!! The guy doesn't miss many pitches. He's got great bat speed, and can turn on a pitch, he hits to all fields with power, he has great speed for a man his size, in fact the Phillies team speed is amazing, they run like the wind. How many catchers in MLB can score from first on a double through the alley? Ruiz can!!! Werth has a good glove, has good defensive instincts, and has a very good arm in the outfield, get lax with him, or undersestimate his arm and strength and he will ring you up at second or third base. He is good at throwing behind runners to pick them off going back to first base. He rarely misses the cutoff man. And he has improved light-years from 2008!! Could probably win the most improved player award!!! He absolutely KILLED the Dodgers, continuing were he left off last season in the NLCS!!

Clubs would die for a Jayson Werth type player, and it never hurts that he has a lot of talent around him!! You know, I'm glad that people playing us short, and underestimating us, and every other thing. After this World Series, everybody will be a Phillies fan, and National League clubs will start to imitate us!! As much as they can anyway, because money is at a premium, and clubs just can't make the moves that they need to make to get better. The players aren't there, and the players who are available, only want to come to contenders. Everyone wants to come to Philly now, the problem is that there are only 9 positions, and the Phillies starters are locked in. We'll probably pick up another quality starter, but we are deep in position players, and the farm is producing players faster than there are spots open for them. Look at Michael Rourke in Houston, there just wasn't any place for him in Philly. He wore us out this season in Houston!!!

Phillies won't be suffering again for a long while!! After all these years, they've finally gotten it altogether!!!

Ibanez and Stairs will probably be the DHs, with Fransisco playing LF against LHP and Ibanez DHing those games.

Werth is a great story. Comeback from the wrist injury, and promotion from platooning player to everyday player. I wish he could liven up his post game interviews. They way he is playing, he will get a lot more practice in the games to come! My family are all Jason Werth fans, too.

jim j-Quit beling jealous. Maris hit behind Mantle and had some great years. Pitchers have to pitch to Werth if they aren't gonna pitch to Howard, so he gets good pitches to hit, and he's good enough to make them pay. That doesn't mean he's on 'roids. Problem today is every hitter who does well HAS TO BE on 'roids. Well, maybe not. I'd settle for hitting behing Howard, when he's as hot as he is now. You're a Dodger fan, and your team got beat. Well, I know none of the players on your team are on drugs. Oh, wait, Manny was! You know the deal. They're all tested now, so if you're gonna do it, don't get caught. Anyhow, you better win. Okay, the Dodgers won, just not enough. That's a shame. Next year looks like it's gonna be tough for the Dodgers. Torre must've heard about the McCourts' domestic strife when he said he won't be back after his contract runs out. Smart move. He'd probably come to the Phils, except they got Manuel

I still can't believe that the Yanks scored six in the top of the seventh only to give up three in the bottom of the same inning and then lose. Are these guys joking? You don't do that and let a game slip away. If the Yanks don't have Rivera, they don't have a bullpen, and they only have three starters. Give me a break. The Angels should be home for the season. Instead, they're taking the Yanks back to New York. Please.

All these media types and posters talking about Phils-Yanks. Why does it have to be the Yanks? So they played in '50. Forget that. I was born in '50, and I'm an old man. I just wanna see the Phils win two in a row. If they play the Angels (not out of the world of probability now), that'll be just a great to me. Neither AL team looks too great after last night. Angels shouldn't be back in it; Yanks shouldn't've lost. Let's see who from the AL decides to limp into this thing.
