Martinez leaves game with stiff neck

  • Print

ATLANTA (AP)—Pedro Martinez(notes) left his start after three innings because of neck stiffness in Philadelphia’s game against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night.

Martinez was trailing 3-0 when he approached the mound to begin warming up for the fourth. The right-hander, who gave up seven hits, three runs and one walk with one strikeout, never got the chance as manager Charlie Manuel brought in Chad Durbin(notes).

Phillies officials waited until the bottom of the sixth inning to announce that the three-time Cy Young Award winner was diagnosed with stiffness in the right side of his neck.

Philadelphia had a 7-0 record in Martinez’s seven starts this season. He was coming off a 130-pitch performance that included eight scoreless innings, six hits, no walks and seven strikeouts in a 1-0 victory last Sunday against the New York Mets, his former team.

In a 9-4 victory over Atlanta on Friday, rookie starter J.A. Happ(notes) pitched just three innings for the Phillies. The team said Happ left for “precautionary reasons” after he missed his two previous turns in the rotation because of a strained oblique.

Philadelphia signed Martinez to a $1 million, one-year contract on July 15, though the deal was worth an additional $500,000 if he met certain incentives.

Martinez was not offered a contract after going 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts last year for the Mets. After helping Boston win the 2004 World Series, he signed a $53 million contract, but won just 32 games during his stay with New York, missing the playoffs in ’06 and undergoing major shoulder surgery that limited him to five starts in ’07.

    #230, that's great!

Cole Hammels needs to get his head out of his ass and get going. Moyer being the class act will do what's best for the team and it's becoming quite obvious he is struggling more and more to get guy's out so it looks like he needs to come out of the rotation. Phillies have some options though which is a good thing.

I was hoping Pedro would get picked up by Tampa so Don Zimmer could sneak up on him with a bat!

I strongly believe that Pedro'll be more affective coming out the pen, in late relief.

Seems that for all the good luck Moyer has had; the opposite has been true of Hamels. I think he has been pitching better than the records show. This is not to say he has not dropped the ball a few times. It's just that Jamie has been lucky enough to get the runs to back him. Good pitchers do it wither they get the runs or not (i.e. Cliff Lee and even Blanton and Happ).

If I'm to believe that the junkball king can pitch into his latter 40's, granted he's a lefty...I can see Pedro still having a low 90's fastball and therefore super-effective change-up, ironically Moyer's out-pitch!

Now question about it, the rotation is starting to come into its own. Pedro may not start immediately, but he is a nice insurance policy. Hamels, is in free-fall, until he works out his problems, we don't know what version will show up from start to start. Now, Hamels lost his last start because of defensive positioning problem in right field.

Newly acquirred rf, Ben from Cleveland was not used to National league hitters and was positioned out of place. Manuel should have detected this and made the adjustment. Having said that, Hamels STILL has to make the pitches to get hitters out!! The blown play clearly rattled Hamels, and he basically self-destructed from there. Hamels has to get hitters out to be effective, last year was last year. While Hamels may be a season wiser, he has to realize that the hitters are also a season wiser, and he hasn't made the adjustments!!

Cliff Lee is a life-saver, that can only get better. The wild-card is who is in between J.A. Happ, and Joe Blanton, not a bad decision at all, and this can only make both pitchers better. When you have two pitchers competing like this, it makes for great baseball, and great pitching!! Both pitchers are pitching out of their minds right now. Blanton, Happ, or Happ, Blanton; you can't go wrong!! If Moyer finishes the season it will be his last as a Phillie. So let Moyer contribute whatever he can, and that will be it. Moyer will probably wind-up as a pitching coach for the Phillies. With Martinez looming in the background, it can only make the entire staff better. The rotation I see, will probably wind-up as Hamels, Lee, Happ, Blanton. Next season, Lee will wind-up as the ace, Hamels, Happ, Blanton, fighting for the second spot, Drabek, will surface as the rookie sensation, and I think Martinez will be in next years starting rotation, with maybe Happ being the fith starter.

Why not go with 6 starters for a couple weeks until the rosters expand in September? Lee, Blanton, & Hamels (going back to last year), have all thrown a lot of innings over the past year & the extra day of rest between starts won't hurt & should keep them fresh for the stretch run & playoffs. Moyer makes me nervous right now & Hamels ain't sharp, but neither merit removal from the rotation just yet.

I lived in Chicago when Moyer started his career. Now I am in Philly when he should end it. I also lived in Seattle too. I've always liked him but he has reached the point were he is not helping his team. I'd rather have a washed-up Pedro (Vote for Pedro).

I cant stand Pedro. I think he is the ultimate coward. When he was in the AL he would throw at and hit everyone he could because he never had to pick up a bat. It all changed when he went to the Mets. I cant stand him. Hopefully his arm falls off in his first appearance for the Phillies and we never hear from him again.

Seeing what a really horrid season Cole Hamels-(terribly inconsistant and a very high ERA) and or Moyer- (who is like 98 years old and so completely washed up that he's now considered old laundry despite his lucky win ratio the rest of his numbers stink ! ) are having maybe it should be one of them two who gets sent to the bullpen and NOT Happ who has been consistantly one of the few bright spots in that rotation, it WOULD really be a huge mistake to take someone like Happ whos doing great in the rotation and waste that arm in a pen, Cliff Lee has been good (so far) as a Philly but his numbers weren't so hot for the Tribe before the trade (althought he doesnt give up many walks at all) and I really DONT see the phillies hitting much better than Cleveland, in fact MORE Phillies hitters are hitting well below .250 than in Cleveland so I doubt Lee will be much better in Philly and Pablo Enchelada is almost as old and sucky as Moyer so why even bother with his washed up arse?, I mean he really looked washed last year with the choke-king Mets and the year before was no prize either, Pedro should've retired at least 3 years ago, but than again what would the uneducated underskilled non-english speaking rican-roach do with itself without big baseball money? He would have to go back and get a JOB and rejoin the rest of his beaner family picking produce in Nutbraska or Oaklahomo ! Oh, And to the chump who said Baseball is a waste, sorry to inform you moron but Golf, Soccer and Tennis are the biggest @#$%-sport wastes along with grown men racing each other in swimming pools and on bicycles, how homo is THAT ?! oh yeah nut-less sissy's named Lance and Pierre ride bikes through frog cities ! NASCAR was cool till they went all gay-disney-like-commercial and started catering to night-time TV ratings, low quality drivers, restrictor plates and "car equality" (how gay! ) and It was MEANT to be a Sunday Afternoon sport, NOT Saturday night special over-priced balogney !, hell if we want overpriced sports we already have BORRING basketball, football and baseball which each cost and arm and two of your children's legs to almost go and enjoy ! I'm a Yankee fan but even I want to see the Philies in it ! I really hope that they pound on the over-rated, over-hyped Mets some more this season than go and beat the hell out of over-rated FAtlanta, Flo-rida, St Louis & Los Angeles, and i still say @#$%sburgh, San Diegorivera, Washoutington, Houston, Tampax Bay & CinSinatti should all just merge into one big minor league team and call themselves the "Best of the AAA Cellar Dwellers"

This doesn't change my viewpoint that the Phillies don't owe Moyer anything.

An earlier post said that Moyer bleeds red. Come on, he's only been on the team for a year. Remember how he held the team up for more money last year? Well, with that comes greater expectations. He has performed far below expectations. The Phillies don't owe Moyer jack.

I been watching pedro in santo domingo working hard to get in shape. If i was pedro, i will quit and wait for the time to become a hall of famer. Pitching to AA kids and K11 is nothing to be exited about. When he face a ML lineup, instead of 11 K is going to be a diffrent story. Good luck pedro and god bless you, your arm and your family.

Moyer is class. The new Phils front office has a chance to show class too. Show MLB that people matter to an organization. Jamie bleeds Phillies red and deserves respect not just because he's a super guy but because he has done a great job for the team. Off field performance has a lot of impact on the team, the organization and the fans....it's called leadership by example. Philly has some great fans and it sickens me that we are still referred to as the city that snowballed Santa, that beats up it's own fans! Any one else remember Jeff Garcia? When his contract was up, the Eagles reportedly never even said thanks after he took us to the playoffs. TOTAL NO CLASS! Professional does not just mean getting paid a lot of money or taking a lot of money.
