Martinez leaves game with stiff neck
ATLANTA (AP)—Pedro Martinez(notes) left his start after three innings because of neck stiffness in Philadelphia’s game against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night.
Martinez was trailing 3-0 when he approached the mound to begin warming up for the fourth. The right-hander, who gave up seven hits, three runs and one walk with one strikeout, never got the chance as manager Charlie Manuel brought in Chad Durbin(notes).
Phillies officials waited until the bottom of the sixth inning to announce that the three-time Cy Young Award winner was diagnosed with stiffness in the right side of his neck.
Philadelphia had a 7-0 record in Martinez’s seven starts this season. He was coming off a 130-pitch performance that included eight scoreless innings, six hits, no walks and seven strikeouts in a 1-0 victory last Sunday against the New York Mets, his former team.
In a 9-4 victory over Atlanta on Friday, rookie starter J.A. Happ(notes) pitched just three innings for the Phillies. The team said Happ left for “precautionary reasons” after he missed his two previous turns in the rotation because of a strained oblique.
Philadelphia signed Martinez to a $1 million, one-year contract on July 15, though the deal was worth an additional $500,000 if he met certain incentives.
Martinez was not offered a contract after going 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts last year for the Mets. After helping Boston win the 2004 World Series, he signed a $53 million contract, but won just 32 games during his stay with New York, missing the playoffs in ’06 and undergoing major shoulder surgery that limited him to five starts in ’07.

Cole Hammels needs to get his head out of his ass and get going. Moyer being the class act will do what's best for the team and it's becoming quite obvious he is struggling more and more to get guy's out so it looks like he needs to come out of the rotation. Phillies have some options though which is a good thing.

Newly acquirred rf, Ben from Cleveland was not used to National league hitters and was positioned out of place. Manuel should have detected this and made the adjustment. Having said that, Hamels STILL has to make the pitches to get hitters out!! The blown play clearly rattled Hamels, and he basically self-destructed from there. Hamels has to get hitters out to be effective, last year was last year. While Hamels may be a season wiser, he has to realize that the hitters are also a season wiser, and he hasn't made the adjustments!!
Cliff Lee is a life-saver, that can only get better. The wild-card is who is in between J.A. Happ, and Joe Blanton, not a bad decision at all, and this can only make both pitchers better. When you have two pitchers competing like this, it makes for great baseball, and great pitching!! Both pitchers are pitching out of their minds right now. Blanton, Happ, or Happ, Blanton; you can't go wrong!! If Moyer finishes the season it will be his last as a Phillie. So let Moyer contribute whatever he can, and that will be it. Moyer will probably wind-up as a pitching coach for the Phillies. With Martinez looming in the background, it can only make the entire staff better. The rotation I see, will probably wind-up as Hamels, Lee, Happ, Blanton. Next season, Lee will wind-up as the ace, Hamels, Happ, Blanton, fighting for the second spot, Drabek, will surface as the rookie sensation, and I think Martinez will be in next years starting rotation, with maybe Happ being the fith starter.

This doesn't change my viewpoint that the Phillies don't owe Moyer anything.
