Phillies get Cy Young winner Lee from Indians

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Cliff Lee(notes) is more than just a consolation prize.

The Philadelphia Phillies didn’t get Roy Halladay(notes), instead acquiring the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner from Cleveland on Wednesday.

Looking to bolster their so-so rotation, the NL East leaders sent four minor-league prospects to the Indians for Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco(notes). The Phillies strongly pursued Halladay, but quickly struck a deal to land Lee once they deemed Toronto’s asking price for the six-time All-Star was too high.

“One of our goals was to acquire a top-of-the-rotation guy, somebody who we felt was going to make a difference. And we think that Cliff can certainly do that,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said.

The left-handed Lee is 7-9 with a 3.14 ERA in 22 starts this season after going 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 2008. The Indians dealt CC Sabathia(notes), then the reigning Cy Young winner and in the final year of his contract, to the Milwaukee Brewers last summer.

“I’m going to miss all these guys here, but it’s an opportunity for me to help a team that’s in first place,” Lee said after the Indians lost to the Los Angeles Angels 9-3 in Anaheim, Calif. “They’re the defending world champions. So as far as that goes, I’m excited.”

The Phillies sent Triple-A pitcher Carlos Carrasco(notes), infielder Jason Donald(notes) and catcher Lou Marson(notes) along with Single-A pitcher Jason Knapp to Cleveland.

“The value was compelling,” Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. “It had to be compelling.”

Lee turns 31 next month and his contract includes a $9 million club option for next season.

Amaro acquired Lee without giving up top pitching prospect Kyle Drabek, rookie left-hander J.A. Happ(notes), who is 7-2, or highly touted minor league outfielders Michael Taylor and Dominic Brown.

“Watching him go through last year and this year, it’s not like it’s far off of Halladay at all,” Phillies closer Brad Lidge(notes) said of Lee. “He’s that kind of pitcher. And not having to give up Happ to get him, that’s pretty impressive.”

Lee gives the Phillies another top starter to join Cole Hamels(notes). The MVP of the World Series and NLCS last fall has been inconsistent this season—Hamels was 7-5 with a 4.42 ERA, though he pitched well in a victory at Arizona on Tuesday.

The Phillies have a comfortable lead in the division—six games ahead of second-place Florida. They’ve sought pitching help since No. 2 starter Brett Myers(notes) had hip surgery in June. Jamie Moyer(notes) leads the staff with 10 wins, but he is 46 and has a 5.32 ERA.

The addition of Lee means Philadelphia has to drop someone—possibly Rodrigo Lopez(notes)—from its starting rotation. Lopez, though, is 3-0 with a 3.09 ERA in four starts. The Phillies also have Pedro Martinez(notes) rehabbing in the minors. The three-time Cy Young Award winner signed a $1 million, one-year contract during the All-Star break.

“I’d rather have a surplus than have needs,” Amaro said. “It’ll work itself out.”

Manager Charlie Manuel said he’ll probably make a decision about the rotation on the team’s plane ride to San Francisco on Wednesday night.

Francisco, batting .250 with 10 homers and 33 RBIs, upgrades Philadelphia’s bench, which has lacked a solid right-handed hitter.

The Indians have been a disappointment this season and their decision to deal Lee for prospects is another blow for Cleveland fans, who have seen stars such as Manny Ramirez(notes), Jim Thome(notes) and Sabathia leave via free agency or trade.

“We’ve been through this before with much less talent in our cabinet,” Shapiro said. “If we hadn’t made tough decisions and trades before like this in the past, we wouldn’t have had guys like Cliff.”

Lee came to Cleveland, along with center fielder Grady Sizemore(notes), from the Montreal Expos in a 2002 deal for Bartolo Colon(notes).

The club had hoped to sign Lee to an extension but talks broke off during spring training. A succession of injuries and dismal relief pitching dropped the Indians out of contention and forced Shapiro to begin rebuilding.

The Indians traded infielder/outfielder Mark DeRosa(notes) to St. Louis last month, sent reliever Rafael Betancourt(notes) to Colorado last week and dealt first baseman Ryan Garko(notes) to San Francisco on Monday.

AP Sports Writers Tom Withers in Cleveland, Gregg Bell in Seattle and Andrew Bagnato in Phoenix contributed to this report.

This trade and its effect are over-rated. Santana was supposedly the best pitcher in the game, and how many pennants or World Series have the Mets won since his arrival? It takes more than one great starter to win a pennant. Phils have fairly good hitting, decent starters, but the bullpen is a disaster with the reincarnation of Steve Blass in the person of Brad Lidge.

Should have traded for Halladay instead of Fluke Lee. He was great on paper in 2008, but everyone knows he's not ever going to come close to repeating that. This makes no sense from a team on the brink of dynasty. Basically, Toronto went head over heels for Drabek. Throw in Brown and another prospect and waalaa, a hall of fame ace. Perfect! But nope, someone else wants Drabek, so he must be Tom Seaver. So we get Lee for slew of prospects equal in pedigree to Drabek. Lee is a nice #2, but not even close to what we set out to do. Phils fans, you will soon see...huge error by Amaro. You should have demanded Halladay.

If Lee can pitch at home for the Phillies, he's definitely worth the effort! What up with the home vs road record?

Its people like post 211 and 212 for why the Indians just say faq it. Seriously read that idiot Marglo ranting.......Faithful Cleveland fans should find that persons address and beat them down. .........Who's the idiot kaahn0626, go ahead throw away your hard earned money with no return...Obviously everyone can;t win every game, but this is getting ridiculous, year after year. I am a fan, but will not pay them for this so called excuse of a team. It is tie we start getting something in return for our investment. And yes, if you buy enough tickets and concessions, it is an investment in the team....If you like to throw away your money, I'll give you my address, and you can come over and when I beat you down, you can give me the money you would rather waste on nothing, at least I'll give you something for your money...You are the IDIOT!!!

Are you phillies fans really that stupid? don't you realize that every time one of your teams is expected to be in any championship game or expected to do extremely well, the team chokes and all you q*eers start crying. If you need an example, look at all the NFC championship games and the 1 super bowl the eagles lost. the phillies won the world series, mainly because they played the rays, but because no one expected much from them. no one took them serious and they caught teams by suprise. yes, the phillies are much better from this trade, but mark my words, they will choke and not win the world series. same thing for the eagles this year. have fun building up your hopes phillies fans, only to see them come crashing down.

I just can't get over this trade. Shapiro is so confused he doesn't know what decisions to make. Bring a guy in like DeRosa from free agency then trade him, trade back to back cy young winners and receive no immediate help in return. Now trade Martinez? The Indians finally have some guys like Martinez & Lee for leadership roles and he trades them? Cleveland is back to being a farm system. The part that drives me nuts is having to listen to Shapiro say the same bullcrap he did several years ago about building for the future and core players. All a bunch of buzz words and quotes that mean NOTHING!!! I lived in Cleveland for 38 yrs and moved 3 years ago to another state. I will not be renewing my subscription to MLB on Directv to follow the Tribe ever again.

It kind of reminds me of the movie Major League except that in the movie they win at the end. Up your butt Jobu. Maybe you could sign a couple of those players and have a shot at the end. LOL!! I smell a repeat in Philly.

I really feel for you Indians fans.It must be tough to follow a team, that you love, and see management rip them apart by trading off all your best players.I would be pissed off if my teams management did that stuff. Anyway good luck and I hope the players you got in the trade become good one day.

Why is Marson in this deal? Stupid. The Indians should have asked for Michael Taylor instead, they already have a really good catching prospect (Santana- now he probably moves to 1B) and could use some upgrading in LF.

There's no reason for Indians' fans to get excited about the minor league players Cleveland got from Philly, no matter how good they might be. As soon as any of them play up to potential or beyond, they will just be traded away for more unproven minor league players; and the cycle will keep repeating itself. They will all get the Cliff Lee and C.C. Sabathia "treatment" if they excel. Cleveland will not be a championship team until it starts KEEPING its championship caliber players instead of always being on the lookout to trade them at fire sale prices. Even Mark DeRosa got traded as soon as he started playing above expectations. Plus, why the hell was Ben Francisco thrown into the deal? Four minor league players just for Cliff Lee would not have been enough to replace Lee, but are the Indians giving away players now as well? Lee and Francisco should have rated at least 7 minor league players to make the deal look semi-respectable. And if the deal fell through because of Cleveland asking for "too much," that would have been even better. The problem was that it wasn't Philly that acted desperate to make a deal; it was Cleveland (and for no reason).

Come on Cleveland fans. Did you all forget the fact that Lee was 5 and 8 when we sent him down in 07'. Our team sucks we're a mess, we need young pitching to even make an effort.

Phillie fans its a long season. Phillies are the fav right now but the Dodgers and Cards will not make the NL easy to win. Remember the Cubs had the best reg season record last year and lost to the Dodgers. Anything can happen once the post-season starts. Anyhow good trade for Cliff Lee. Uncle Cliff is a beast.

This is exactly why I don't watch the Indians games no more, either at the park or on TV. It was a joke when they gutted the team a few years ago trading away everyone that was good, including Thome and Omar. Then they get rid of Colon and Sabitha, both great pitchers. The list goes on and on, if your a good player on the Indians you might as well expect to be traded.

Indian's Fans should be thrilled with this trade. All of those prospects the Phillies gave up came from the Iron Pigs line-up which has been on fire all season. I was at an Iron pigs game a few weeks ago were Lou Marson and Carrasco were the only factors in their winning game. I'm a Phillies/Yankees fan, and feel kinda bummed to see such good talent get traded away.

It's not like not trading lee would of made any difference to the indians in the future anyway. I mean, how bad does a team have to be for there pichter to have a 3.14 era and still be 7-9. I am glad to sUpport a team that actually knows how to win. Go PHILLIES! ( besides, you guys still have the cavs. that should be something to look forward to.)
