Phillies decline option on Feliz

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Philadelphia Phillies have declined their $5.5 million 2010 option on third baseman Pedro Feliz(notes).

Feliz hit .266 with 12 home runs and 82 RBIs in 158 games for the National League champion Phillies this season. He’ll receive a $500,000 buyout.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says he won’t rule out bringing back Feliz.

Feliz had the winning hit for the Phillies in the 2008 World Series clincher against Tampa Bay.

Pie in the sky, maybe. Uggla is available from FL. He says he doesn't want to change positions, but he'd be a great choice at 3B for the Phils. He was unhappy in FL because they wouldn't pay him, but with a winner in Philly, he might decide to move. Who knows? He can slap leather, and he can hit. Check it out.

You guys all say that they should unify MLB and adopt the DH in both leagues. Why not unify and eliminate it? The DH started in 73 as a three year experiment. It should be eliminated now. Why extend the career of a has been? Pitchers are athletes....let them bat.
And to those of you who say baseball is more exciting and more runs are scored because of the DH... check the stats before you make stupid statements. Here they are for the last 3 seasons:
    2009 - AL - 4.8 runs/game
    NL - 44.4 runs/game
    2008 - AL - 4.8
    NL - 4.5
    2007 - AL - 4.9
    NL - 4.7
So scoring one extra run every 3 or 4 games is more exciting? Wow... you guys need to get a life. What's more exciting to watch is the strategy involved in pitching changes, double switches, pinch hitters.... this is the way the game was invented and ment to be played.

American Leaguers, let us National Leaguers discuss our business, of how we can make our clubs better!! You do yourselves a great dis service be being here trying to tell us our business, when it is clear that the two Leagues are not equal!!!

You will get a better argument/discussion with RedSox, BlueJays, Orioles, and other American League fans. You are wasting tme here, because we in the National League don't speak your language. If the American League really wanted to do something, they would advocate for the inclusion of the DH into the National League!!!

Just as I suspected, no baseball knowledge!!! Until the DH is allowed in the National League, the American League will always be a handicapped League, playing with a supreme advantage over the National League. I knew you couldn't handle the truth!!!

Continue to enjoy the handicapped American League, forever known as the junior circuit!!!

    You're DISMISSED!!!

It's too bad that you can't deal with the truth!! You have all but admitted that the American League is Little League baseball!! Continue on with your childish rants. As I said, you're new to baseball, probably a bandwagon Yankees fan. You have added NOTHING to the conversation of baseball!!

JK ~~ Scott Rolen was a treat to watch defensively this year too in Toronto. He hits well and consistently. He has some health issues as a consequence of playing in St.Louis, but he brings enough leadership that Cinci parted with lots to get him.

I agree. This is not a year with an adundance of quality third basemen. The Dodgers need one. The BoSox need one. The Angels and Mariners need one.

Unfortunately some one had to pay for Phillies loss, and Feliz was bottom man on the totem pole.

    1996- 3-0 at Atl
    1998- 2-0 at SD
    1999- 2-0 at Atl
    2000- 2-1 at NYM
    2009- 2-1 at Philly

And while im at heres another fact for u- 2009 World Series Champions New York Yankees

A DH is NOT just like a pinch hitter. National League pinch hitters are situational hitters. The DH is a REGULARLY, RECURRING part of the American League lineup!!! Now, American League may occasionally use a pinch-hitter, but that does NOT affect the DH. The DH is an integral part of the lineup. The American league is replacing the pitcher with a skilled, professional hitter, who is coming up to bat, at least 4 times per game. A pinch-hitter bats ONCE a game!!! The only time a pinch hitter gets any more at bats, is when he comes in as a defensive replacement, and that is usually around the 8th inning, so the only logical chance he would get to have another at-bat is if the game went into extra-innings!!!

    A DH, is NOT a pinch-hitter, and a pinch-hitter is NOT a DH!!!

That's not what I said!! What I said was this: Yankees regulars, 1 RBI, Matsui, 6 RBI. Why? Because Matsui is in the warm dugout, studying every pitch that Pedro threw. Matsui, isn't cold, Matsui, isn't beat up from playing the outfield, Matsui, is a a full-time, professional hitter in the DH spot. It's a huge advantage for the Yankees, and a huge disadvantage for the Phillies!! That was Matsui's position DH, all season long. The National League clubs do not have a full-time DH, so, any player that we put into the slot, would have been at a disadvantage, because he's not doing that everyday, and doesn't have the experience in the position of DH, most National Leaguers are inexperienced at being the Designated Hitter!! Most National League DH's are bascally pinch-hitters, and that is their approach to being a DH. Most pinch-hitters in the National League, are like relief pitchers, in that when they are inserted in the game, it is in an emergency situation: men on base, the club is behind, and the pinch-hitter; like the relief pitcher has to come through for the club, they are used to that situation; but; as DH's, they are lost, because sometimes the DH will come up with no men on base, and in the American League, those DH's are used to that, so they treat it as just another at-bat, some of them are not expected to jump start the offense. In the National League, a pinch-hitter is always expected to jump-start the offense, because they usually come into the game in a pressure-packed situation.

Again, the DH, as played in the American League, gives the American League an unfair advantage over the National League. The only way it can be remedied is for the National League to be allowed the privilege of the DH, or abolish it altogether. Also, because the American League pitchers don't bat, they suffer less injuries than their National League counterparts!! American League pitchers don't get injured running the bases, or trying to break-up a double-play, or getting hit with a pitch, or damaging their arms, from swinging a bat!!

I honestly don't know why it has gone on as long as it has, but something needs to be changed. Either make the DH legal for BOTH Leagues, or get rid of it altogether!!! Now, the American League has been using it for a long time, and they won't be willing to give it up, so it has to become legal for both Leagues!!!

    No flaming, just posting..

But I don't like the move. Feliz was clutch most of the year. And yes, he lost some power, but his glove cannot be dismissed. David Bell anyone????? Scott Rolen was a treat defensively, but then, had a plethora of players at 3rd. So some consistency was nice. I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH ADRIAN BELTRE, THat guy is garbage. Contract yr. player, and I want no part of him. Feliz is the best 3B on the market, period. Figgins is good, but a 30+ yr old lead off base stealer? Only goes downhill from there. And his bat does vanish in thin.....cold....air. Unless there is a player for trade that I cannot think of, I want Feliz back. And this lineup doesn't need a leadoff hitter. Rollins has been a 6-7 hole hitter his whole career. Put him there. OH, and you will see my distaste for Ibanez. Not a Burrell guy either, but Ibanez went from 30 to 37 in less than 3 months. Need someone else. Maybe one of the young guys...... But if one of the young guys, you may have to adjust the batting order below.

    1. Victorino
    2. Utley (Going by the Dusty Baker philosophy, best hitter hit 2. More ABs)
    3. Howard
    4. Werth
    5. Someone else OTHER THAN IBANEZ, PLEASE!!!!!

I agree with 149. no one wants to see pitchers flopping around. Just think baseball should unify the rules for the two leagues. Im in favor of the DH. Pitchers get a FREE out when a pitcher is due up. Its harder to pitch to 9 proffesional hitters and thats why the AL has better pitching come All Star games.

Who wants to see a .095 BA pitcher fumble around with a bat... At least the DH makes the lineup tougher. NL "strategy" is all about some no-name middle infieler who's batting .232 switching with a pitcher whose even worse.

That was a fluke. A million to one shot at the least. What amazed me was that the umps made a determination on it before the game started.

DH and interleague play are abominations. They ruined the All-Star game. However, they didn't affect the outcome of the WS. I am a Phillies fan. The Yankees played better and they earned it.That being said, I'd like to choke that camera guy!

Ron - And during the regular season with interleague play. No one is making crazy excuses, the Yankees were the better team. Never once did I say it was because of the DH they lost because it wasn't. I was agreeing with you that it's dumb to have 2 different rules and explaining why I think the rules give the edge to AL teams.

Look, we are only talking about the World Series here. That's where the two teams met. The Series lasted 6 games. 3 in NY with the DH and 3 in Philly with no DH.

The Phillies had home field advantage and no DH, just like all year, Correct? They lost 2 out of 3 games there.

The Yankees won the World Series. Stop making crazy excuses and deal with it.

Fact, the DH allows pitchers to go deeper into games, all you need do is look at the stats. AL teams "do" set their rosters/lineups in consideration of having a DH.

I for one don't like the DH and would rather see WS home field advantage returned the other league every other year.

Ron H - Thats not what I said at all and I won't consider it a win because you clearly didn't read what I wrote.

The NL team is usually inserting a 2nd teir player ( aka a non starter for both offensive and defensive reasons) in the DH spot and pinch hit situations, the AL teams have former position players that were really good hitters but are a liability in the field... do you see the difference?
