Yankees get RHP Chad Gaudin from Padres

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Yankees added another arm for the stretch run, getting right-hander Chad Gaudin(notes) from the San Diego Padres on Thursday night for a player to be named or cash considerations.

The Yankees announced the trade during their 13-6 victory over Boston.

The 26-year-old Gaudin is 4-10 with a 5.13 ERA in 20 games for the Padres, including 19 starts.

“I love to win and that’s what (the Yankees) do,” Gaudin said. “I’m going to go there and help them win as many games as I can.”

Gaudin did especially well in late July, giving up three earned runs or less in five straight starts. It was not certain when Gaudin would join his new team, having gone from last place in the NL West to first place in the AL East.

“He’s a guy who could relieve, spot start, do a lot of things for us,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Gaudin became expendable for the Padres, who have acquired seven young pitchers in two recent deals with Oakland and the Chicago White Sox.

“We have some more options and we will continue to give young players opportunities,” San Diego manager Kevin Towers said. “Gaudin did a nice job when we were in a jam earlier in the year and he gave us some very good starts. It gives him an opportunity with one of the best teams in baseball right now and to wear the pinstripes.”

Gaudin could fill a couple of roles for the Yankees, either in long relief or as the No. 5 starter. Sergio Mitre(notes) has been shaky since becoming the fifth starter after the All-Star break.

Gaudin is 32-35 lifetime with two saves and a 4.58 ERA with Tampa Bay, Toronto, Oakland, the Chicago Cubs and San Diego since 2003.

Towers said the Padres have until Sept. 1 to decide on selecting a player from the Yankees organization or cash.

Chad's record is 4-10. Wow maybe they can pick up one who is 1-10 with an era of 25. Baseball is fixed and political just like politics. It's entertainment.

Mike B, the Padres had to have put Gaudin on the waiver wire. There, he is available for any team to take. In case of multiple takers, he goes to team with worst record. Padres can pull him off the table, but can't try to trade him again for 30 days. Since no other team apparently wanted Gaudin, Yanks offer a player of their own. If he's on the 40 man roster, he too must clear waivers. Since Gaudin was traded for a player to be named later, I assume the other player was a minor leaguer.

He had good enough stuff to shut down the Rangers a few weeks/months ago. And certainly got shelled a few times since. Cash figures he's got strikeout stuff (had 11 in a game this year), let's see if surrounding him with a winning staff can't keep him straight. Good upside. Bye Bye Mitre, you didn't make us love you, but you did enough to earn yourself a job somewhere else.
