Source: Padres interview Kim Ng for GM job

  • Print

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Kim Ng interviewed for the San Diego Padres’ vacant general manager’s job on Saturday, giving her another chance to become the first female GM in major league history.

Ng, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ assistant general manager, interviewed with Padres CEO and vice chairman Jeff Moorad, according to a person familiar with the process. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the club is still in the process of finding a replacement for Kevin Towers, who was fired two weeks ago.

Both Ng and Moorad declined comment when reached Saturday night.

In her eighth season as vice president and assistant GM with the Dodgers, Ng is one of only two women executives in major league baseball to hold such a position in baseball operations.

Ng became the first woman to interview for a GM’s position when she did so with the Dodgers in 2005. The job went to Ned Colletti. She also interviewed last fall for the Seattle Mariners’ GM job that went to Jack Zduriencik.

Before coming to the Dodgers, Ng was a top adviser to New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

The Padres have been tightlipped about the process. It’s believed that Jed Hoyer, assistant general manager of the Boston Red Sox, is the leading candidate.

Moorad has said he wants a more “strategic approach” from his GM. Towers was known more as a seat-of-the-pants GM who built four NL West winners and had his 1998 club reach the World Series, where it was swept by the Yankees.

If Ng gets the GM job, the first thing she needs to do is to buy a vowel.
But knows her stuff from what I hear, so she's definitely Padres' little girl. Good luck Kim!

I am not necessarily a SD fan, but I do like to see them present a good team on the field. They have a beautiful ball park, a wonderful city, weather wise, and just need a few things to go their way. It would be easy to criticize the moves they have made this year, but we do not know all the particulars. Start with the all star first baseman and build from there. A few good players are out there and available. Get the best you can, make sure everyone is happy and on the same page. You might be surprised just how much these kind of players will bring wins. Thanks

I hope the Interview with Ms. Ng is real and not just for publicity stunt by San Diego Padres owners and CEO, I think it will be good for baseball, Hiring Ng as GM, Or maybe some folks will be afraid to hire Ms. Ng and become successfull.. LOL you all knows if thats happenes Oh well,, Just hope she gets the Job. on merits. based on on reading she is raedy to performed, Based on being asst to some very successful GM and not very succesful one, At least she has seen both Kasman and Dodger GM, plus some of the one not so successful and yet got re-hired. a Fired GM god re-hired before her.. Anyway Hope she get hired on Merits not on gender...based on my reading of her past accomplaishment I think she is ready to step in as GM. If not will be another disappointment for some one like hers whom I believe work really hard...17 years and counting I think she is ready.. on Merits alone.. please.... Don't hier her because of Her Gender please... I think she very qualified..thats my take.

    thanks

Here's a question: Since people of Chinese descent are no longer considered minorities in many areas of Society, does her interview satisfy baseball's minority interview rules?

If (and when) Ng becomes baseball's first female GM, you can say without a doubt that she's well qualified, not some affirmative action candidate who's really not deserving. Good for her, she's earned it with her competence and experience.

If Kim NG wants to be a Gm she needs to wait for a better team to have a vacancy because lets face it, owners like to blame someone besides themselves when their teams fall flat on their faces and fans show their outrage by not packing the house anymore........so NG dont take the padres job, new ownership same @#$%y payroll and same @#$%y requirements, ie make as much of a profit for as low a cost as possible.......I'm a red sox fan and I can say we sucked until we got a gm in theo epstein who understands what it takes to win and that it is takes money in players ie manny ramirez pedro martinez curt schilling mike lowell josh beckett, these are all big name big money players......san diego had the best closer in baseball arguably better than mariano rivera although that is up for debate in my mind, dont take the job.....you'll hate and worse like Towers you'll find new ownership throwing you under the tires of a bus on espn saying you're the weak link when 5 mins ago they called and told you your job was safe.......hell theo epstein told nomar garciapara he wasnt going to be traded......yea well he did get dealt

She's more than qualified. If given the opportunity, she can build a winning team. That and an open checkbook.

SD Padres are the LA Clippers of baseball! They are by far the worst frachise to ever negotiate in sports deals. All they do is go after local players and players with issues ie Milton Bradley, Jim Edmonds. Sometimes you got to a woman to a mans job. Personally I think a chimp could've ran that team better than it was before. This may be good move Ng maybe she'll spend some money and actually bring in some players. The Padres are just a bad with a beautiful stadium.

Are you guys really trashing the idea of hiring Ng because the Padres haven't been successful? The idea that the organization is a bad job for her is stupid. For one, it's under new ownership, two, a low payroll is what separates good GM's from great GM's. You think she'd be gone in 3 years? Kevin Towers was the GM for over ten years, taking crap payrolls and developing division champion teams....in the same division as those rich Dodgers. I can't stand yahoo! user's comments. If you're not a fan of the sport, stay away. Internet + anonymity = dumbasses being abnoxious.

NG SHould not want the SD job. Im not saying she should hold out for a good team, but i am saying hold out for a better team and organization than the Padres. She gets that job, they'll fire her in 3 years and she would be putting back female advancement int he MLB front offices for awhile.

If SD selects Ng as their GM, they're setting her up for failure. The team has the second lowest payroll in MLB and it's not looking like they're going to be throwing a lot of dough around in the offseason. As Faustoo mentions, teams gotta spend the big bucks to compete. Obviously, there are outliers (i.e. Minnesota) but the correlation between payroll and success is quite high. You can put Brian Cashman or Theo Epstein to GM the Padres but that won't matter. It's great that SD is interviewing Ng for non-baseball reasons. For baseball reasons, it's irrelevant.

IS NO IMPORTANT who is the GM. THE thing is if the PADRES will invest good money$$$$ in players......... who cares who is the GM , The DODGERS dont have a good team because they have a good GM, They are good because they invest in the players,
