Padres hire Hoyer as general manager

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Jed Hoyer was once co-general manager of the Boston Red Sox for 44 days after Theo Epstein walked away from the job.

Now Hoyer has a GM gig of his own.

The San Diego Padres have hired Hoyer as their new general manager, a person with knowledge of the situation said Saturday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement won’t be until Monday.

Hoyer, who was in Boston’s front office when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, is due in San Diego on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Hoyer emerged as a favorite immediately after Padres CEO Jeff Moorad fired Kevin Towers during the last weekend of the regular season.

Moorad has said he wants a more “strategic approach” from his GM. Towers was known more as a seat-of-the-pants GM who built four NL West winners during his 14 seasons as GM, and had his 1998 club reach the World Series, where it was swept by the Yankees.

Hoyer inherits a young team that floundered for much of the season before playing well the final two months to finish fourth in the NL West at 75-87. The Padres, who went 37-25 since July 28, finished ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who had been put together by Moorad before he resigned in early January to pursue the purchase of the Padres from John Moores. Moorad and his group currently own about 35 percent of the team.

Hoyer will face the same obstacle Towers faced through the years—a payroll significantly smaller than baseball’s big hitters. The payroll for next season will probably be in the $40 million range.

This is the second time Moorad has hired a Red Sox assistant GM. When he ran the Diamondbacks, Moorad hired Josh Byrnes as general manager in October 2005.

Hoyer was hired by the Red Sox as assistant to the GM following the 2003 season. He was later promoted to assistant GM, and later was given the title of senior vice president.

Epstein, who spent five seasons working under Towers in San Diego’s baseball operations department, walked away from his job as Boston GM on Halloween 2005. Hoyer and Ben Cherington were later named co-GMs. Epstein returned on Jan. 24, 2006.

Originally from Plymouth, N.H., Hoyer played shortstop and pitched for four seasons at Wesleyan University. He was an assistant coach at Wesleyan for two seasons.

A week ago, the Padres interviewed Los Angeles Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng, giving her a third chance to become the first female GM in major league history.

Ya know, if everyone that b1tched about the uneven TEAM salaries would actually do SOMETHING pro-active and send the baseball world a message about a SALARY CAP, this stuff would go away. Do you think for a second the Steinbrenners, or the Henry's of the baseball world give a hoot about your complaining? STOP going to games.

I'm a life-long Red Sox fan, and I'm sooooooooo tired of all the griping about the uneven pay scale....I say PUT OR SHUT UP. STOP going to games. STOP BUYING the insanely over-priced garbage they sell at the stadiums. The ONLY way the powers-that-be will listen is to actually do SOMETHING about it, and STOP buying their crap.

So, if you go to the games, or buy their garbage, stop your friggin whining. You're only adding to the misery.

You do realize the next step is PPV baseball, dontcha?

POST #13, Brian you hit it on the head. It seems like every 4 or 5 years we get a competitive team and then it dissolves the next year. I am a loyal Padre fan and it stinks putting up with garbage year in and year out. I pray Moorad WILL NOT BE A MORON and put a winning team on the field.

San Diego with a payroll of 40 million will give maybe KC or Pittsburgh a run for 1st place in the 40 million dollar a year teams. Add in Oakland, Cincinnati, and Marlins and you'd have a pretty good conference. They won't make it in the Mets, Angels, Red Sox, Yankees, Philadelphia division as they spend too much money for their players. Again, won't it be sweet if the powers that be, made a competitive league based on payroll amount instead of the way it is now. So, another words, SD, you're going to suck again next year and the year after that and that. But don't worry, you'll have a lot of other cities in the same boat as you. Just ask the Mets and the Cubs, high payroll doesn't guarantee victory.

If management thinks 40 extra large is going to balance the win-loss ledger - they'd be better off trying to figure out a way to get dog @#$% outta carpet. At least it's national league - pure baseball...Enjoy the game!

First of all it was Randy smith that brought the players to San Diego Padres. Towers traded that staff away after the world series.
Towers had tried to keep the payroll down (See our loss of our only cy young award player)
Why? Because his contract we could no longer afford. Ever think of asking him to resign at a lower price so he may stay here? Nope. not going to happen. why because we have a very young team now and guess whay they are just now coming into there own. Yeah it had taken them most of the year but hey they are here now.
Maybe we pick up a few bats this year. who knows we have been lied to for so many years whats another 20?

The Padres get Hoyer and the Red Sox get Towers ? Now let's see if some of the ball players end up switching teams as well. I 'm sure some of the ball players playing for the Padres would welcome the opportuinty to escape Purgatory and end up in heaven (Fenway Park ) ! SMILE !

The problem is ownership. This franchise has had big time idiots for owners. They finally get a new stadium which was to increase the revenue stream so that they could get some quality free agents. No, they (previous owners before Moron) treat Trevor Hoffman like garbage and offer him $4 million a year to play for them. His previous years salary was $8 million. Now that was a kick in the gonads to the all time save leader. Now Moron fires Kevin Towers who worked for this poor excuse of a baseball franchise for 14 years. He was told to put teams together with very low budgets and he did the best he could. Now, Moron lets him go and hires Hoyer who will have to endure the same BS. He is not dumb because he is hoping that when the GM for the BSoxs is fired or resigns he can step into that job since he will have experience as a GM. He could then go to a franchise that wants to win not one that is just interested in filling seats with wacky promotions like Sunday breakfast at the ball park. Give me a break!

The Padres suck so much that they should have at least made history and hired a woman for the job... Kim Ng deserves her shot at the reins of a team. The old boys club lives on. Oh, and if all anyone can write is who sucks and who doesn't suck, then you all suck.
