NEW YORK (AP)—In a story July 11 about the death of Yankees’ public address announcer Bob Sheppard, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Kansas City was the opponent in his final game. The opponent was the Seattle Mariners.
RIP Bob. The whole country loves you. Go Yankees!
I hope all the Yankee players,coaches and Joe Giraldi will wear blackbands in memory of the late Bob Sheppard starting after the All Star break. In my heart Bob was a true Yankee.

I won’t forget watching a Yankee game in television in 1985. I noticed the players and coaches had black armbands on their left sleeve. I asked my father who that was for and he told me that the equipment manager/clubhouse attenedent Pete Sheehy passed away. When Pete first started Babe Ruth was still on the team. He stayed to see greats such as Dimaggio, Berra, Mantle, Marris, Whitey Ford, Reggie, and Mattingly. He became member of the Yankee family.
Many sports team have non athletes who have been important to the organization. It is always great when you hear about them getting recognition for their contributions to the club. As broadcasters, Ernie Harwell is important to the Detroit Tigers history, just as Harry Kallas is to the Phillies history. As an announcer, Bob Shepperd is an important part of the Yankee family and will be missed. Hearing his voice announcing the players at the old Yankee Stadium will always be part of their history.
I heard him live at the stadium in about 10 different games. Its amazing for someone to have called games involving Mantle and Maris, then Munson and Jackson, all the way into Jeter, Posada and Rivera. The caliber of players he saw on an everyday basis for 50 years is incredible. The man is an absolute legend. One of those few voices you can just think about and know what he sounds like. "Now batting for the Yankees, the centerfielder, number 7, Mickey Mantle.. number 7. RIP Mr. Shepard.

Mr. Sheppard received his own plaque in Monument Park on May 7, 2000.
It was a true honor to listen to you Mr. Shepard. You were the true king of the mic in N.Y.....you will be greatly missed.

A beautiful piece Ron! My first MLB game was Yankee Stadium when I was 8 years old; 1966; they were terrible racked by age and a lot of bad luck...but I will never forget that late September day and the first time I heard Bob Sheppard announce Mickey Mantle, Tom Tresh and the rest of the team. He did revere Mickey and though all of his announcements were similar, my grandfather and I shared goosebumps when he did Mickey's. I still remember turning to my grandfather and asking him who announced the players. I love that Jeter continues to honor him.
He was the personification of class and he will be greatly missed.
From a Tigers Fan to the Yankee Fans I know what you are going through We lost Ernie Harwell in May of this year it's sad to see these 2 Great announcers leave us, but I know when Bob left this earth Ernie was standing at the gates of Heaven to welcome him. God Bless
