Phillies beat Dodgers 10-4, return to World Series

  • Print

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Ryan Howard(notes) and the defending champs are back in the World Series—proving last year was no fluke and looking even more dangerous this time around.

Jayson Werth(notes) homered twice, Shane Victorino(notes) and Pedro Feliz(notes) also connected and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to win their second straight NL pennant.

Brad Lidge(notes) closed it out, Howard was selected NL championship series MVP and the Phillies became the first team to reach consecutive World Series since the New York Yankees in 2000-01.

“I can get used to it,” manager Charlie Manuel told a cheering crowd. “We got one more step and we’re going to get it!”

Now, Jimmy Rollins(notes) and crew wait for their next opponent. They’ll go for their third World Series title beginning next Wednesday night at New York or Los Angeles. The Yankees lead the Angels 3-1 in the ALCS, which resumes Thursday night at Angel Stadium.

Meanwhile, slugger Manny Ramirez(notes), manager Joe Torre and the rest of the Dodgers go home after leading the NL with 95 wins in the regular season and sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in the division series.

“They’re confident, they’re talented, and they’re going where we all want to go right now—the World Series,” Torre said, praising the power-hitting Phillies.

With their latest big night at the plate, Philadelphia overcame another shaky outing by 2008 NLCS and World Series MVP Cole Hamels(notes). Los Angeles closed to 9-4 in the eighth, but Ryan Madson(notes) escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Russell Martin(notes) and retiring Casey Blake(notes) on a grounder.

After beating Tampa Bay in last year’s World Series, the Phillies are trying to become the first repeat champions from the NL since the Cincinnati Reds in 1975-76. The Yankees were the last team to win consecutive titles when they captured three in a row from 1998-2000.

“We got one more step,” Howard said. “Then we got action!”

Andre Ethier(notes), James Loney(notes) and pinch-hitter Orlando Hudson(notes) hit solo homers for the Dodgers, who also lost to the Phillies in five games in last year’s NLCS.

The teams combined to tie the record of seven homers in a postseason game. It was the fifth time that’s happened.

“They were better than us,” Ramirez said. “You saw what they were capable of doing.”

Fireworks exploded over Citizens Bank Park after Victorino caught a fly ball for the final out. The NL East champions, who beat Colorado in four games in the opening round, met Lidge in the middle of the diamond to celebrate and began putting on hats with the stitched-in logo of “WS2009.”

Team president David Montgomery led the crowd in a chant of “Charlie! Charlie!” during trophy ceremonies on the field. Then, players retreated to the clubhouse to spray champagne and celebrate.

On the 29th anniversary of their first World Series title, the Phillies became the first NL team to win consecutive pennants since the Atlanta Braves did it 13 years ago.

“Big games call for big times,” Werth said. “Hopefully, we can keep it going. We’ve got four more games to win.”

Five pitchers tossed 4 2-3 strong innings in relief of an ineffective Hamels, who hasn’t been the dominant ace he was last postseason. Chad Durbin(notes) earned the win by retiring all four batters he faced, including Ramirez representing the tying run in the fifth.

Lidge, who has bounced back from a rough season with spotless work in the playoffs, tossed a scoreless ninth.

“I always believed it was going to turn around,” he said. “One of the biggest things was I was starting to feel really healthy at the end of the season.”

Hamels allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1-3 innings. Still, he got a standing ovation on his way to the dugout.

Vicente Padilla(notes), the former Phillie who was excellent in his first two playoff starts, lasted just three-plus innings and gave up six runs.

Once considered the NL’s laughingstock, the Phillies have been thinking dynasty since riding down Broad Street on flatbed trucks during the city’s first championship parade in 25 years last October.

So what that they’re the team of 10,000 losses? The sad-sack losers of the past are a distant memory in Philadelphia.

This will be Philadelphia’s seventh trip to the World Series in 127 years. The Phillies beat Kansas City in 1980 and lost in 1915, 1950, 1983 and 1993. The Yankees swept Philadelphia in ’50, winning the first three games of that series by one run.

Another sellout crowd implored their team to “Beat LA!” and waved their white-and-red rally towels, rocking Citizens Bank Park on a beautiful, 63-degree night. It was only 48 on Monday night.

Coming off a dramatic comeback win in Game 4, capped by Rollins’ two-run double with two outs in the ninth, the Phillies got it going with two outs in the first. Chase Utley(notes) walked to reach safely for the 25th straight postseason game, tying Boog Powell’s major league record.

Padilla wanted no part of Howard, who hit .333 with two homers and eight RBIs in the series. He walked him on four pitches after firing three inside fastballs, hoping to make the big slugger a little uneasy.

Padilla then threw three straight balls to Werth. The fired-up crowd roared louder with every pitch out of the strike zone.

After taking two strikes, Werth sent a drive to the seats in right-center for a 3-1 lead. Fans gave Werth a curtain call and another standing ovation when he ran out to right field in the top of the second.

Werth’s solo shot off Hong-Chih Kuo(notes) in the seventh gave him five homers this postseason and made it 9-3.

“A lot of times we win games just because of our power and the fact that we can hit the ball out of the ballpark,” Manuel said. “We need to be a little bit more consistent, and I’d say we can be a better hitting team. But right now for the National League, I think we’re outstanding.”

Ethier put the Dodgers up 1-0 in the first when he connected on a 1-2 fastball down the middle, sending it into the seats in right-center. Loney’s shot in the second also came on a 1-2 pitch, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Victorino hit a two-run shot to left off Game 1 starter Clayton Kershaw(notes) for an 8-3 lead in the sixth.

NOTES: Dallas Green, manager of the 1980 Phillies championship team, threw out the first pitch to Manuel. Green got a big hug from Dodgers third-base coach Larry Bowa, the shortstop on the ’80 team. … The Phillies are 3-2 against the Dodgers in the NLCS.

I don't like the Phillies and I HATE the Yankees (I'm a Braves fan), but I'm rooting for the Phillies all the way. I honestly think they have a very good chances of beating the Yankees too (since I think the Yankees have a higher chances of beating the Angels than losing to them). The Phillies have a very good ballclub, and though I was pulling for the Dodgers, I felt like the Phillies would beat them. The Yankees are getting even more hyped than the Phillies, so it'll be even nicer to see them get crushed in the World Series.

Am I correct when I say, the amount a team has to spend depends on the per capita income of the state in which the team resides? If so ANY player in baseball (if good enough) would warrant the salary of a Jeter or A-Rod, if they play in NY. It doesn't come down to the yankees BUYING a world series, is has to do with NY making more money therefore being able to afford the salaries. Give them an inch they'll take a mile.. Phillies have been good for 2 years.. Yanks... well count the rings, hell count the players, and if you say thats all you have to say, thats about as weak as a mike tyson comeback fight.

The Yankee's beat the Phillies 4 games to 3 this year, Phillie's also had some injuries during this time frame and they didn't have Cliff Lee.

Yankee's haven't done anything spectacular in the post season, and the officials have made terrible calls in their favor the entire post season, balls 6ft in the line being called foul, double tag outs, etc etc....

Phillie's will Win the first game, prolly lose the second and sweep during the three home games. That's only if the Yankee's can avoid another upset with the lead they current;y hold lol.

To all sports fans out there, here's how it will go........ assuming the Yankees even finish off the Angels and get to the World Series, no matter the outcome, it will be like this........

If the Yankees win: "blah, blah, blah, 27 world championships, greatest team in the history of world sports of all kinds, yada,yada,yada........

If the Yankees lose:"blah, blah, blah, we still have 26 world championships, more than any team in professional sports, greatest team in the history of world sports of all kinds, yada,yada,yada......

So like it or not, no matter the outcome, you will NEVER shut these idiotic Yankee fans up.EVER.....sigh....

You wrong, the money that comes in from stadiums is very little. The owners are making the money , the average person does not benefit from a new stadium.

It's all BS, there have been many PHD studies on the subject but I am wasitng my time to think that amyone cares. They want the stadiums, than the owners hsould pay for it and not the people.

Over 1 billion dollars of public money for 4 new stadiums in PA, and you think thats ok, get a life

Jonathan F said, and I quote:
"man phillies suck there just lucky that the dodgers wherent actually hitting cause if they where dodgers would have won"

The Phillies won, which means they don't suck. And just in case you forgot, they are the defending world champions. As far as the Dodgers lack of hitting is concerned, I guess in your world the Phillies' outstanding pitching had nothing to do with it huh? I'm amazed at the ridiculous remarks posted in here. You win the award for most poorly formed sentence and most foolish remark ever made, all in the same post. Be proud!

562 Do you know how much money comes back into the cities when their teams play well? Do you know anything about civic pride.?If one kid chooses a life of sports over drugs and drug related activity how do you put a price tag on it? With that said I believe money should go to the arts and other social causes however there plenty of other things that tax payers dollars are wasted on, other than building stadiums. Start there thn work your way to sports franchises.

Did you know the Phillies and Yankees received bailout money for their new stadiums? *1.1 Billion Dollars.

It’s called *Public Money and you’re paying for it so enjoy the game and hope to see you at the parade. Approximate parade cost, 2 Million Dollars, guess who pays for it.

How the Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money into Private Profit
Pro sports arenas/stadiums drain $2 billion a year from public treasuries for the sake of private profit. While the millionaires and even billionaires who own sports franchises have seen the value of their assets soar under this scheme, taxpayers, schools, police officers and many more all come out losers.

Well....It's official!! The World Series will be cancelled due to too many egos and too many steriod using cheats on the field. Not to mention umps who can't make the right calls. This year I will be watching something more exciting than the series.......My grass growing and paint drying. BTW I hope the Yankmees retest A-fraud. I don't believe that all it took to get him hitting was a fake hip operation. Every other person and player who has had that surgery has never come back that quick. Just something to think about. Have a good off-season everybody.

I have been a Phillies fan since birth, LONG TIME AGO, and I have suffered through the rough years like any other Phillie fan, especially in the mid 70's. I am so glad to see they have an excellent two years in a row.
To all you Yankee fans out there, how do you know who is going to win the final games of ACLS? Remember what happened just a few years ago when they got the asses kicked 4 games straight? I am voting for the Angels, even though I was hoping it would be an East coast WS but with anybody other than then the YANKERS, oops I mean Yankees.
Good luck Angels, you know somebody is watching over you.

I know the yankee's series isn't over yet but..............Yankee's vs. Phillies.....let the games begin. Going to game 7 and will go either way. both teams have explosive hitting and pitching is going good for both squads. I know my Dodgers are out but they need to A) Get rid of Manny and move in Pierre as a starter. I love Manny but he's only good at hitting not fielding. He should do good in the AL where DH is allowed. Pierre makes contact and gets on base & has speed in the outfield. B) Use that money to get some help in the bullpen and Starting pitching. C) Sign Ethier and Kemp to some longer contracts for more money before someone else does. D) Get rid of Martin and get us a catcher with bat power )V. Martinez). E) All of the above.
