Nationals claim English off waivers from Giants

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Washington Nationals have claimed left-hander Jesse English off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and added him to their 40-man roster.

The 24-year-old English went 7-7 with a 4.20 ERA in 26 games, including 19 starts, for Double-A Connecticut this season.

To make room for English on the 40-man roster, the Nationals designated catcher Luke Montz(notes) for assignment. Montz hit .181 with nine homers and 36 RBIs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse in 2009.

Montz spent 10 games with Washington last year, batting .143 with a home run and three RBIs.

I've known Ian Desmond since my son and him played little league and AAU ball together. He is a great character kid with tons of upside. His bat has been perceived as his weakness in previous minor league campaigns, but with a .354 average at AAA Syracuse, that should be dispelled. I'm not a Nats fan, but I'm sure pulling for this guy.

Dukes wasnt playing that much, he was behind Kearns who is hitting.178 in his last year with the team. Dukes had way too many baserunning mistakes to trust him. He also appeared to be a bit casual in getting to some balls in centerfield. With hopefully Willingham back for good and Dunn they need a centerfielder to take charge. they also need a leadoff hitter, Guzman is hitting for a high average but has swung at way too many first pitches. Getting a decent rp dont hurt either. Joel Hanrahan needs to go back to the minors to get straightened out.

Bingo, natsfanmike, on all points. The current situation is strikingly similar to that when the Lerners owned the Braves, right before they won their division 13 or so years in a row and pulled in a World Series during that time. And what the Devil Rays were before last year.

I have no idea why Pittsburgh traded the two they did for the two they got, as the Nationals seem to have gotten FAR better of the deal.

Of course, considering Pittsburgh's track record, this looks pretty par for the course. Let's hope the Nats can make more trades like this.

Villone has a zero era so far after over a dozen innings. So far he is one of the few doing well. And shutayoumouth are you suggesting to do what the Yankees do? Cause they are about the only team with as bad of a bullpen as the Nationals have. Lets have these young players get a year or two under their belt and maybe we can be like Tampa and actually build from within and with young players.

How stupid....replacing one dud with another dud. Hey Nationals! The only way to get stabilized is to spend, spend, spend on good players.
