Top pick Strasburg (neck) scratched from start

  • Print

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Washington Nationals say No. 1 overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg(notes) has a strained neck muscle and is being scratched from his scheduled start in the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars game.

The team says the right-hander is being held out of Saturday’s game for precautionary reasons.

The Nationals are listing Strasburg’s status as day to day and are not sure when his next Arizona Fall League start will be.

Strasburg signed a record $15.1 million dollar contract in August after being the top pick in June’s amateur draft out of San Diego State.

Why did yahoo post my message twice? They should put something in their system that prevents duplicate posts due to technical computer glitches.

    Just a totally unrelated aside.

Will Strasburg + Bryce Harper be enough to salvage baseball in Washington this time around?

As Terry Cashman eloquently put it: "Ike was the only one winning down in Washington".

DC baseball has always stunk to high heaven. I doubt Strasberg will alone be enough to turn that around. The kid's only going to pitch once every 5 days and it's not like he's going to be undefeated with a 0.00 era either. Obvious 2010 draft pick Harper is 10 years old (please note sarcasm, I know it's hard to detect on the internet) and there is absolutely no guarantee he'll be anything other than an overhyped high school dropout who can't cut it at the big league level when he gets called up way too young without proper development. The batters answer to Todd Van Poppel.

Joe Mauer wasn't too bad... The draft classes have sucked since 2001, when Pujols, Mauer and Ichiro all came up.

The last ten pick from 1995-2005 (I'll leave 06-08 off the list for time to develop.)

    1995 Erstad, DarinDarin Erstad
    1996 Benson, Kris
    1997 Anderson, Matt
    1998 Burrell, Pat
    1999 Hamilton, Josh
    2000 González, Adrián
    2001 Mauer, Joe
    2002 Bullington, Bryan
    2003 Young, Delmon
    2004 Bush, Matt
    2005 Upton, Justin

Let's hope Strasburg is worth the 15 million. From these picks its a real crap shoot. Glad im not a GM.
