Mets decline 2010 option on reliever J.J. Putz
NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Mets have declined an option on reliever J.J. Putz(notes), making him eligible for free agency.
Putz was due to make $9.1 million in 2010. Instead, the Mets decided Friday to pay him a $1 million buyout.
Putz was 1-4 with two saves and a 5.22 ERA in his first season with New York. The Mets got him a trade with Seattle last offseason to be the setup man for Francisco Rodriguez(notes).
Putz had surgery on his right elbow in June. He was shut down in August for the rest of the season because of a problem in his right forearm.
The Mets also said pitcher Mike Pelfrey(notes) was under contract for 2010 at $500,000 as part of a pre-existing deal.

If YOU prefer to ignore certain facts, that is the "gift" freedom provides you. And speaking of freedom, do you not have a problem with 80 million illegal aliens being defended by our LEGAL Armed Forces? Now remember, being illegal means they can never join the Armed Forces. I guess I'm racist, because I HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THAT. Just as I have a huge problem with allowing these illegals to fill job positions, welfare lines, and littering our schools with children who are nothing more than anchor babies.
I did make hatred comments. I did not wish injury to any athletes. I did not say I want a team of Caucasians. I simply said Omar was making decisions that are not savy, while defying logic and intelligence. I supported my position with facts and comparisons. You can ignore them, but that doesn't make me a racist. It does however make you ignorant to the facts. I suggest you run for Political office. You'd make a great politician. Now do me a favor and stop fighting bbk's fight. Maybe if he wished you and your family injury because his aunt lost to your aunt in a pie baking contest you'd see a problem with bbk's thought process.....then again, maybe it's just how Latinos/Hispanics think. I refuse to believe an entire ethinic culture thinks this way, but what do I know. Apparently, I'm a racist.

With that stated, realistic lineup:
SS Reyes SS Reyes
2B Castillo 2B Castillo
CF Beltran CF Beltran
LF Holliday LF Holliday
3B Wright OR 1B Delgado
RF Franceour 3B Wright
1B Murphy/DeRosa or Huff RF Franceour
C Santos C Santos
If the Mets can somehow, from some miracle, pull off a trade for Adrian Gonzalez (again, not likely at all), then obviously he'd play 1B, and he'd be the #4 or 5 hitter (between Beltran and Holliday, or between Holliday and Wright...I honestly favor the latter). If not, then, IMHO, they really should re-sign Delgado as they'll need additional power.
If the Mets cannot get AGon (again, they probably won't be able to anyway) and lose out on signing Holliday (if so, see you next year Mets fans), and don't re-sign Delgado, the only other option I see for offensive production that might put them back among the upper echelon in the NL East would be making a deal with the Rays for both Carlos Pena AND Carl Crawford. That line up would look like:
SS Reyes Reyes
2B Castillo Crawford
LF Crawford Beltran
CF Beltran OR Wright
3B Wright Pena
1B Pena Franceour
RF Franceour Castillo
C Santos Santos
Actually...this isn't a bad line up at all. Quite speedy, actually. They may not out hit or hammer the Phillies, but they'll sure as hell run them to death on the base paths. Speed kills, after all.
Bench? If Murph isn't a starter (and, IMHO, he shouldn't be), then he's the super sub for the corner infield and possibly corner outfield spots. Pagan is the OF sub. Thole rides the bench for MLB experience. Cora is back as the middle infield sub. And, honestly...I'd re-sign Shef to another 1 year deal. He wants to stay, for one, can be had for less (say, a one year incentive laden deal for $1 mil?), is willing to just be a full time pinch hitter (as that's the job he signed up for last year, remember), is still a dangerous hitter who still scares the crap out of opposing pitchers, and he'd basically be the Mets version of what the Phillies have with Matt Stairs. But, unlike Stairs, Shef could, on rare occasion, actually play the outfield.
So, the bench: Murphy (IF - corners), Cora (MI), Pagan (OF), Thole (C), Sheffield (PH, occasional OF)

Maine showed himself, again, prone to injury. IMHO...time to cut him lose via trade. He's still young and has a good upside, so a team with a need for MLB ready pitching might be willing to part with a couple of prospects. Or...he could be one of the MLB ready arms in the center of a deal for, dare I say...Roy Halliday. Or even packaged in a deal for, say, Adrian Gonzalez. Probably not...but dare to dream Mets fans! I could see them putting him in a deal for, say, Ervin Santana though.
Everyone thinks that Marquis would be a good signing...and he would. But after the year he had out in Coors, he might wind up costing too much money that could be better put elsewhere (~$15 mil). And Marquis isn't a sure thing on the mound anyway. If the Mets are gonna spend that kinda money, they should go after Garland, who eats a lot more innings and walks less batters, which is extra important for the Mets.
I actually think the Mets should take a chance on Ben Sheets. Although also injury plagued, he is brilliant when healthy, and could come cheap this offseason (think bargain basement contract). One year deal at, say, $3 -4 million with incentives and a club option for 2011? Rich Harden is another name being thrown around, but he too is injury plagued, might end up costing more than Sheets, and was never as brilliant as Sheets. Younger, yes, but never as good.
The Mets might not be able to trade Ollie Perez. It was a stupid signing to begin with at that amount of money, tbqh, but maybe he'll have a bounce back year next season. At most, though, he should be the #4 starter, as, IMHO (and the numbers bear this out) Pelfrey is a solid #3. If they find someone willing to trade for him, they should jump on it and cut their loses. The only team that would be potentially looking for pitching and able to swallow that contract are the Dodgers. If they're open to a trade, the Mets should insist on Charlie Haeger being thrown in the deal. A knuckleballer (flyball pitcher) in cavernous Citi Field = win. And he's only 25. And knuckleballers are known to eat innings (see Tim Wakefield in his "prime" on the BoSox). Honestly, even if the Mets can't deal Ollie, they should talk LA into giving up Haeger for a lower level prospect and some cash.
My realistic starting rotation based on what I think Omar will end up doing:
J.Santana, Garland, Maine, Perez, Pelfrey
Less realistic, if they somehow find a way to trade Maine and Perez and get Ervin in a deal (and possibly Haeger), and if Omar has the guts (he doesn't) to try Sheets at a bargain price:
J.Santana, Garland, E.Santana, Sheets, Pelfrey/Haeger
Far less realistic:
Halliday, J. Santana, Garland, E. Santana, Sheets
Really the arms that the Mets should target in the offseason are Garland and Sheets. Garland is cost effective, and can eat innings which is what the Mets need. Sheets might bounce back well after not really pitching in '09. He's worth at least E.Santana via trade, if possible. Same deal with Haeger. Halliday is obviously a long, long, long shot, but the Mets should still explore the option.

HOWEVER, I do have a huge problem when the GM signs old broken down Latinos like Alou, El Duque,' Ayala, Cancel, Casanova, Castillo, Pagan, Tatis, Feliciano, Figueroa, Raul Martinez, Cora, and a dozen others when there are otheroptions who are younger , better all around players, who could be signed for less money. Add to the mix that in his 5 years with the Mets, Omar has yet to trade away a Latino player for a non-Latino player. He seems to have no problem signing away Caucasians and African Americans for Latinos, but God forbid he trades away one of his hombres for a guy who speaks English. So yes, I'd gladly welcome Pujols or Texiera at 1st base, and have Santana on the mound, just as I would welcome Hanley ramirez at shortstop and Raul Ibanez in the OF, but I am tired of paying absurd amounts of money the heartless lackless leadership of Beltran and Delgado, or the powerless Castillo, the mediocore play of Tatis, Cancel, Casanova, Pagan and having 5 Latino players over the age of 35 in our MINOR league system.
So call me whatever you like, I honestly couldn't possibly care less. As for bbk, I knew you were Latino/Hispanic just by your "wishes" and pride. Now do me a favor and defend why we have to press 1 for English because your fellow latinos refuse to learn and speak English. Case in point, Omar has been in the US for over 35 years, yet he talks like he just go off the boat on Wednesday. If my ancestors had to learn English and adapt to the USA culture, what gives you the right to DEMAND we adopt your language? Oh yeah that's right ignorance......like accepting a player's mediocore play ONLY because he is from a spanish speaking country.

and give me a break about the mets competing without having injuries. they have no heart or desire. if everyone was healthy, they would have collapsed down the stretch if it had mattered.
New rallying cry of the mets. phils didnt win the world series. phils didnt win the world series. nice bbk. must make you feel so proud.

You do come off as a bitter racist and then to be "wishing" he fall down a flight of stairs and wind up in a wheelchair was beyond stupid, and even more childish then a kid wishing the other team "gets injured".

If you want to point a finger, point it at the out of shape, lazy ass Latinos Omar has signed and pampered. The reason the Mets had so many injuries is simple, NOBODY looks like an ahtlete on this team. Delgado looks like his idea of excersize is enjoying a few tacos and some rice and beans, Reyes doesn't seem to be one to stretch his legs at all having had numerous leg injuries all throughout his career, not to mention El Duque, Moises Alou, Pedro Feliciano, Nelson Figueroa, Duaner Sanchez, Robinson Cancel, Raul Casanova, and Livan Hernandez. These 8 guys look like a bunch on cops sitting in a Dunkin Donuts......
Now with a little luck, bbk will fall down a flight of stairs and wind-up in a wheelchair for wishing injury on inocent players who just happened to beat the sheet out of his heartless NY Metropolitanos.
What a spitefull selfish bastard.

But it's alright cause they ain't white............what an absolute disgrace. I will never support this team as long as Omar is the GM.....and if any Mets fan want a successful team, they should do the same. JUST BOYCOTT EVERY GAME AND EVERY PRODUCT THE METS PUT ON THE MARKET.
