Perez latest Met to be sidelined for season
MIAMI (AP)—The New York Mets have lost their third pitcher for the season in two days, an alarming rate even by their standards.
Left-hander Oliver Perez(notes) will require season-ending surgery to repair patella tendon tendinosis in his right knee, the team said after he was examined Wednesday in New York.
The injury ends a dismal season for Perez, who is expected to fully recover and be ready for spring training. He becomes the 13th Mets player on the disabled list, with the pitching staff especially hard-hit this week.
“This is the year for this to happen,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “We’ve got to get it done and move forward, and hopefully we’ll have some healthier days coming.”
On Tuesday, the Mets announced ace Johan Santana(notes) and reliever J.J. Putz(notes) are out for the season. Santana needs surgery for bone chips in his elbow, while Putz had a setback in his recovery from elbow surgery and has been shut down as a preventative measure.
Perez, who signed a $36 million, three-year contract last offseason, finished 3-4 in 14 starts. He was sidelined more than two months because of the ailing knee earlier this year, and Manuel said the injury probably affected the left-hander’s conditioning.
Perez lasted only two-thirds of an inning in his final start Sunday against Philadelphia and gave up six runs, hiking his ERA to 6.82. His next turn in the rotation Friday at Chicago will be taken by left-hander Pat Misch(notes) or right-hander Lance Broadway(notes), Manuel said.
To fill Perez’s spot on the roster, Broadway was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo, where he was 5-7 with a 6.27 ERA in 16 games. The former first-round draft pick was acquired from the Chicago White Sox on May 29 for catcher Ramon Castro(notes).
The Mets began the year with high hopes, but injuries sabotaged their season. Among the players on the disabled list are David Wright(notes), Carlos Beltran(notes), Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado(notes) and John Maine(notes).

For the record, I love Johan
When I suggested this hypothetical trade, he was starting to show signs of wear, but still had two excellent months early in the season (slightly unusual for him) and a reputation of being untouchable after the All-Star break. This combination, in my opinion, put his trade value at its pinnacle.
I do agree with Timbo's business logic, but we all know that if logic was at the center of all deals and trades, our Mets might be looking a lot different than today.
In closing, I hate being right, but this team is 'effed' for years to come unless holes are fixed either internally or externally. Yes this is DOH statement, but who said you can legislate common sense??? :)
RD (from Seattle)
BTW - What do you think we'd get for Johan now compared to what we could have gotten in July?
1. "Trade Johan before it's too late. Make a deal with the Red Sox for their two young no-hit pitchers and the Yuke"
------
Why would the Red Sox trade for a pitcher with a gigantic contract that even they didn't want to pay....and give them a solid every day player who is a gold glover at two positions (who will make $40 Million over the next 4 years) AND their two best young starters. Lester makes $30 Million over the next 5 years, and Bucholz will be cheap for at least a year or two at which point they'll probably offer to buy out his arbitration years + 1 free agent year.
I know Robert's post was before the All Star break but WOW. If they didn't really want to trade Bucholz for Halladay, why in the world would they trade him, Lester and Youk for a single, expensive pitcher? I'm not sure there exists a reality in which this makes sense.

Hey, Look how smart "Robert D" was way back in July!! July 3rd he posted that the Mets should trade Santana before it's too late. Guess what...it's too late...and have been outta contention for at least a month if not more. Maybe Mr. Omar Minnie mouse should get this guy's crystal ball. I love the Mets core talent but that talent doesn't help when they're all in wheelchairs. It seems like the mets and the brewers have the same philosophies. Pay all-star money to average pitchers then complain that those guys are just "under performing" or had this "outta no where injury" but they'll be all fixed when "they get right". LOL Maybe Doug Melvin and Omar should trade themselves to eachother's franchises.
If this guy's last name was Smith or Jones, Omar would've never knew he was alive.....but since he's from Mexico, Omar gives his a $12m/yr 4 yr deal.......what a joke.

Trade Johan before it's too late. Make a deal with the Red Sox for their two young no-hit pitchers and the Yuke. I love Johan, but he's an injury waiting to happen and that's what we're seeing today. Go young and get some grit on this team.
Wright is very good complimentary player, but no leader. Same as Beltran. If they could get a great deal for Reyes, I'd go that way too.
Everyone else is up in the air. Dealing from a strength in a year you suck is the smart move. Does anyone really believe the best of Johan is still to come on a .500 (at best) over the next two years? Not me...

(1) Omar was hired because he's Latino. See, the almighty Wilpons, Fred and Barney, decided to attack New Yorks large Hispanic market, instead of building a winning team based on talent. Hence Los Mets and the insultive "Spanish flavoring" associated with this entire organization........ it's absolutely disgusting!
(2) Omar chooses the managerial staff, including all coaches. This was mentioned when Omar first took over as GM. In fact many media outlets compared this to Bill Parcell's situation in New England several years ago, when he declared, " if you want me to do the cooking, shouldn't I be allowed to do the shopping?" The Wilpons gave Omar free reign to hire everyone, A AA, AAA and the majors. Think about the choices: Willie Randolph a rookie Manager with no previous experience. Rickey Henderson a MLB 1st base coach. Dan Werthan a MLB pitching coach. Sandy Alomar a 3rd base coach. Tony B running the minors. The firing of Rick Peterson.
I could go on and on, but why bother? Everyone will say I'm being a racist by picking on Omar because he's Latino. I guess having a 1st base coach who's a renegade is ok, as is hiring an American League manager with no fire and no experience of the National League game, or a BLIND 65 yr old Alomar as the 3rd base coach, or a pitching coach with NO MAJOR LEAGUE EXPERINCE, or firing anyhone who questions anything or causes any sort of contreversy or a guy with the character of Tony B............This organization is a joke from top to bottom.

Of course Omar not only signed these fossils (all but Beltran and Perez) he gave them excessive contracts and effectively anchored this team with untradable, under-acheiving, heartless talent. If Omar stays, I am done as a Mets fan. DONE!

Watch out Nats, here we come. OBTW, the stadium is too freaking big. It was built for speed and and pitching, which we have none of (how many games this year did a person fail to score from second on a single and the pitching is mediocre at best). This park makes it particularly hard to come from behind to win if your pitching is off any given day. Hmm, wonder why the Yanks are in first place and pretty much everyone on their team has over 15 HRs...idiots, the whole Mets organization. I want my money back.

Our farm system is dismal, with few, if any, prospects to get excited about. Half the team is hurt because Minaya has wasted millions of dollars on a bunch of bums. (I'll exclude Santana, K-Rod and a couple others from that.) And as long as non-clutch players like Beltran and Wright make up the middle of our order, we ain't winning crap.
OMAR MUST GO! Sound the horn!

From Queens to Port St Lucie some medical & training staffs heads had better roll. Close to 90MM in DL in one season.
