Delgado goes 1-for-4 in 1st game since hip surgery

  • Print

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico (AP)—Carlos Delgado(notes) went 1-for-4 Sunday night in his first game since undergoing hip surgery in May, an injury that ended his season with the New York Mets.

The free agent slugger batted cleanup as the designated hitter for the Carolina Giants in Puerto Rico’s winter league. His single came on a fly ball to short left field in the sixth inning.

“I felt better than I expected, for the time I spent without playing. I hadn’t seen live pitching since May,” he said. “The most important thing is this was a step in the right direction.”

“I’m not afraid of sliding. I’ve done it as part of my rehabilitation process,” he said.

The 37-year-old first baseman played in only 26 games during the last season of his contract with the Mets before he was sidelined by a hip injury. He was batting .298 with four homers and 23 RBIs when he went on the disabled list on May 11. He had surgery on May 19.

You guys has come hard on OMAR because the last season fiasco. The injuries killed any aspirations the team has to go anywhere. He does not own the team. He can go an gets any body he wants. I have seen some comments about OMAR saying why you dont do this, why dont you do that, why dont get this player, etc. We will never know what transpire between him and the team decision makers. OMAR has put up a very good team that has failed to finish first in the last couple of seasons because the team inability to perform at his best in the final drive for the pennant. I think we have a competitive team that performing at its best can go all the way to the World Series.

Omar is on with Mike Francesa now on WFAN. He basically said if Delgado is healthy, he's interested.

If Delgado can play at all, this is a no-brainer. The guy is a first ballot hall-of-famer.

If you take a close look at his career numbers you'll see what resembles 13 full years averaging out to 156 games per with 36 homers and 116 rbis. That alone should give anyone the benefit of the doubt and an opportunity to continue at that astronomical pace.. A-Rod & Chase Utley, 2 other high profile players, made it back from similar woes so the odds are in his favor. He only needs 27 homers to cross over the coveted 500 barrier and put a lock on a Hall of Fame career. If he has to do it playing half time, so be it because he'll get it done.

Do you understand that us METS fans have been waiting three years for Delgado, Reyes, Wright, Beltran to all be healthy at once and all put in 25 homers+ in a season. Of course they look good on paper, they've looked good on paper the past three years and look where its gotten us!! Omar cannot bank on these guys anymore I know its hard to say ok get rid of beltran and delgado cause yes when they are good they are good, but the point is WHEN are they gonna be good for the METS? They need to scrap the roster and do some serious rebuilding, starting of course with pitching. OMAR needs to go, honestly anyone of these people posting on here would probably do better. Also yea I like him but Manuel is not a head coach, bring back VALENTINE!!

Well its official, Delgado was able to complete a game WITHOUT injury, so Minaya will now sign him to a $10mil deal. Now we can watch Carlos and Reyes do their choreographed celebrations...again. Ofcourse this is after Carlos refuses to acknowledge of flag during national anthem, runs like hes in 6 inches of beach sand, and pulls a hamstring digging into the batters box.

Omar is an IDIOT...could have had Olivo for $2.5 Mil per for 2 yrs (plus incentives)...roughly the SAME $ as those two STIFFS he already signed. What a TOOL!

I really expect the Braves to give him a hard look. If he stays healthy for even half of the season, he would be worth the risk. By then, Freddie Freeman might be ready to ascend his throne as the 1B of the future. Also, I think Chipper will be battling injuries enough that Glaus will be seeing time there instead of 1B. A one year, incentive based contract seems like a great deal for what he could possibly provide.

if the choice is between delgado and murphy, then please keep delgado....murphy will never be as good as a healthy delgado is right now. so i dont see why any real mets fan would ever consider not keeping degado if we can get him for a discount price....delgado is 37, but he has not been plagued with injuries in the past. if he can get past this hip thing he is good for 30 homeruns and over 100 rbis. i like murphy as a utility player, but he cant start at first base. if we pass on delgado then we better have a better plan than murphy...all you guys that want us to pass on delgado will be crying like little babies when the mets dont have a powere hitting first baseman, who just happens to also bat left handed.

and of course wrights numbers will go up. he will be right around the 25 homer mark next year, and hit around 315. if we keep delgado and he can stay healthy all we need is another starter or 2. depends on what niese decides to do this year...hopefully he can be consistant and be our 5th starter by the all star break,

things are looking up...now we just need to find someway to get rid of maniya before he trades bay for julio franco. i cant believe maniya actually signed bay, but there were no latino OF out there i guess. we are lucky melcky cabrera was already signed or we would have overpayed for him....better to overpay for bay for his power.

Certainly keep DelGado around. I am sure he could be had for a bargain. Think of the lineup. Reyes Beltran Wright Bay Delgado Francouer Santos castillo and the pitcher. Just not sure about who protects who in the line up
Imagine this first and third no out Wright is the batter with Bay and Delgado to follow. WOW

I've stated this several times in other topics this offseason:

The Mets should re-sign Delgado to a one year, incentive laden deal.

Perhaps part of the incentives can be a team option for a second year with a small salary bump and larger incentives. If he doesn't come back to form, don't pick up the option. If he does come back to form, but the team doesn't do well, he can be adequate trade bait to a contending AL team in need of a power left handed bat, and the team option for the 2nd year would make him all the more attractive to such teams. If the Mets do make it, and he comes back to form, he can still be traded in the off-season by picking up his option and then trading him to a contending team. Simple and effective.

A plus is that by doing this it allows the Mets to make other moves. With Ike Davis heir apparent to 1st base in this scenario, Daniel Murphy can become part of a trade package to another team to fill other needs.

Now, I still think the move to make is for the Mets to try what they can to trade for A-Gon, but that's a longshot and the Pads might not trade him until July. So re-sign Delgado on the cheap. It's a win-win situation.

And they still need to sign Garland, IMHO. No, he's not a "big" frontline starter, but he eats innings, and while that doesn't seem to be ultra important to some metrics fans, I think the Mets are a special case: they really, really, really DO need someone to pitch a lot of innings to ease the workload on the pen.

Let Delgado go, sure he has power but he's not a guarantee; perhaps the Mets should dump Coste and Blanco and sign LaRoche. He may not be the best available, but he has experience.

personally, i think we need to sign delgado, as he is a proven power hitter...he was playing great the second half two seasons ago and great last season until his season ended w/ an injury...he provides power that we lacked last season, and would be a nice complement to jason bay, a right handed power source. The only mistake w/ delgado in the past is that we were dependent on his power last year, but this year if we can get a bit more depth at 1B, we can give him a few days off and may not be as dependent...the Bay signing certainly eases Delgado's role off of his shoulders

Blu; I have a running argument with Philsphanwest. While obviously he's a Phillies fan; he's a very bright guy with a sharp baseball head. We don't agree on everything, and in particular, the reason why the Mets haven't won. In a nutshell; PPW believes the Mets haven't won because of their core group of players. I don't. I think the Mets lost in '06 because Yadair 'Fu@kin' Molina got the opportunity to hit off of Home Run Heilman. In both '07 and '08 they collapsed mainly because of their bullpen. Last season we all know about the injuries. I also believe that had the Mets had a La Russa or a Valentine or a Mike Scoscia (sp?) as their manager, Mets history would have a different look than it does the last 4 years or so. I don't even think the Mets brass likes Manuel. The problem is, they are still paying Willie Randolph for one more year, and are also obligated to Manuel for 2010. There was no way Wilpon was going to pay a third guy to do the same job.

Now, if they stay healthy and bomb this year; they have to start from scratch. And that means EVERYBODY. Omar, Manuel, the coaching staff, the medical staff, the minor league scouts, EVERYBODY. Personally, I wish it would start with their owner and a sale of the team to somebody who actually cares about winning.

I agree with you on Murphy....the only thing that worries me is the fact that he played firstbase in the minors and his fielding was ok. It was not considered a problem. Then Jerry told the world that Murphy could NOT field well enough to play first so he was going to be an outfielder. He did not have extensive experience in left field and yet Jerry put him there. We all saw the mess. That was not fair to Murphy. Then they put him at first base ( all of this at a Major League level) and then started moving him all over the batting order. Not fair. Then they talked of playing him at second base(for the second time) and all this surely must have affected his hitting. I really feel his best baseball is ahead of him...he reminded me of Jon Ohleroud (spelling sucks),that type of hitter. What worries me is the Mets getting rid of him and then he blossoms as a better than 300 hitter and a good firstbaseman. I do not trust the Mets to handle him right...they already screwed him over. Like you justnty....I am dissapointed in him and wanted him to do well...he can hit.
