Marlins manager Gonzalez under evaluation
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez will be evaluated at the end of the season, leaving the winningest manager in team history with no guarantee he’ll return for 2010.
Marlins president David Samson also said Sunday he was not aware of any talks between Florida and former Mets manager Bobby Valentine. ESPN.com reported that Valentine, who recently ended a six-year run as manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Pacific League, is in talks about taking a position with the Marlins.
Gonzalez signed a two-year extension in spring training, putting him under contract through 2011. He also led the thrifty Marlins to an 87-75 record with the lowest payroll in baseball ($37 million) and passed Jack McKeon for most wins by a manager in team history with his 242nd on Saturday.
“As we looked at the performance at things that happened, games that went one way, games that went another way, there is no question we felt we should have been a playoff team,” Samson said during Sunday’s Marlins-Phillies game.
Samson said owner Jeffrey Loria, who was not at the game, is insistent the team will not lose money.
“I don’t think he would look at it and say, ‘Man, if I just put in $20 more million, that would have made the difference in making the playoffs,”’ Samson said. “There are some people that argue we could have taken $4 million off this team and done better.”
Loria fired Joe Girardi after only one season despite eventually winning NL Manager of the Year honors. Girardi was replaced by Gonzalez.
Relaxed and puffing a cigar in the dugout, Gonzalez said before the game he was not worried about the report and called Valentine “a good baseball man.”
“I don’t even want to talk about it,” Gonzalez said after the Phillies beat the Marlins 7-6 in 10 innings. “You get judged on wins and losses. We all have bosses. We’ll just keep moving forward.”
Valentine led the Mets to the World Series in 2000, where they lost to the Yankees in five games. He is returning to ESPN as an analyst on “Baseball Tonight” for the league championship series and World Series.
The Marlins went 71-91 in Gonzalez’s first season and improved to 84-77 last year, when he became the third manager to lead them to a winning record.
The Marlins remained in the wild-card hunt this year until the final weeks. All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez(notes) hit .342 to become the first Marlin to win a batting title and rookie left fielder Chris Coghlan(notes) had the most hits after the All-Star break by any National League player in the last 45 years.
“We’re all disappointed,” Samson said. “Certainly winning 87 or 88 games is positive for the organization, but our goal every year is to make the playoffs. That’s that.”
Samson would not set a date when a decision would be reached on the future of Gonzalez and the coaching staff. He refused to rule out other cost-cutting changes within the organization.
“We have not done furloughs, we haven’t done mass firings in the front office that other teams have done, but we’re evaluating the possibility of that too,” Samson said.

ARE YOU KIDDING? I just reread the article and came across this nugget of profound wisdom.
Mr. Samson, let me make an analogy that perhaps you and upper management can understand. With the tools that Mr. Gonzalez had to work with this season is like sending a doctor into surgery with a butter knife and a spoon. These kids are going to be great. Don't trade them! Mr. Gonzalez is a very good manager who is only going to get even better, He works well with the kids and the veterans. Spend a few bucks to help him round out the line up and you'll have a third championship before you know it. I vote ......LET'S KEEP GONZALEZ!

Then Loria and whiney baby Samson should sell the team. That would be the best.

By the way....It would make a very interesting article at checking the other major league teams rosters to see who we've sent to other teams. You'd be amazed at who we gave away and who we got in return....Here's a better idea...How about starting a poll by the fans to see if Gonzalez should go or the Marlins owner....I think that Mr. Loria would have his eyes opened.! My family and I have been Marlins fans since the first pitch. Ownership continues to disappoint us each year. I am sure that I am not the only one who feels this way.

Girardi will be enshrined -- and perhaps Freddie too. If he lets Freddie go, Loria will be remembered as a hack art dealer and a trust fund brat who thought he could run a baseball team. He'll be the laughing stock of baseball...again.

The owners who are conserving every dollar for 2012 should be proud of what they accomplished instead of "evaluating" Fredi's tenure as manager.
And, for the record, Bobby V. is not the answer to the Marlins' ills. Getting the dollars to keep the talent it develops for bigger, better teams is the answer.
Then, the Marlins need to forget about marketing themselves to any person north of Ives Dairy Road and hacer todo solamente en Español. The only way the Miami Marlins will be a success is if they keep ticket prices low and target all of the Latin Americans in Miami-Dade County. You can kiss the Yankee/Met/Red Sox fans who desire to go to a baseball game goodbye.
As far as the Marlins fans in Broward, Palm Beach and Martin -- are there any?
Perhaps there were ... until Samson & Co. sent all the great players to Boston. And Detroit. And a few other teams

Shame on us for supporting management, get rid of them all, resign Uggla, Fire out idiot pitching coach, bring back Perry and get a quality catcher and a better right fielder. I am a firm believer in Doneley, Nunez and Lindstrom as set up and closer.
Think about this, Give Connine a try at Manager, knows the game, has the respect of the players and the fans, but give him the tools, players and a good pitching and infield coach that will teach.
Think of this line up
1. Coghlin, 3B
2. Maybin CF
3. Hanley SS
4. MOURNEAU C - get this guy this will be a franchise player that plays in small market now, will luv it here
5.. Cantu 1a
6. Ugla 2b
7. Carroll RF
8. Burrell LF from Tampa, he needs to be in the NL, but still has a bat and an arm. former UM would come here in a beat.
SP - IN ORDER, NOLASCO, JOHNSON, SANCHEZ, VANDENHURK, FIFTH STARTER
dump MILLER, VOLSTAD, PINTO,SANCHEZ,
GO FISH, NEXT YEAR WILL BE OUR YEAR IF WE FOLLOW THIS GAME/BUSINESS PLAN

Dianne dear, news for you, no one from Broward or Palm Beach goes to the games now, so who cares if you won't go to a wonderful, beautiful, airconditioned, no rainout stadium. What about the Heat ? Hmmmm lots of Heat fans from Broward there every night the Heat play, so that "threat" just doesn't ring true. You who live in Broward and Palm Beach should have packed Landshark so the Marlins would have thought twice about moving south. But really, you make it sound like you are the only ones being put upon. I live in Cutler Bay, a 57 mile jaunt to Landshark Stadium right now, which is I dare say a longer drive than you have from your perch in Broward to Landshark, or will have from Broward to the new ballpark. So finally after 16 years we South Dade residents are getting a fairer shake, so really shut the freak up.
